Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig suffered a serious head injury in a 2016 accident at his Victorian farm. A steel trapdoor struck his head and arm; according to a 2018 PerthNow interview, bleeding inside his skull accumulated over three weeks before he had a seizure and was taken to hospital for surgery. In the years that followed, he described the injury’s effects on his memory, sense of self and work—and a renewed appreciation for life.
What happened to Michael Leunig?
In a feature published on May 1, 2018, PerthNow journalist Pip Christmass reported that Leunig was checking a bushfire shelter he had designed on his Victorian farm when its steel trapdoor fell onto his head and arm. He felt nauseated and dizzy afterwards, but did not recognize those symptoms as signs of concussion.
PerthNow’s account says bleeding inside his skull built up over the next three weeks. Leunig then had a seizure, woke in an ambulance and underwent an operation in hospital to relieve pressure. He described the injury as severe. Read the PerthNow feature.
How long did his recovery take?
The available reporting establishes that his recovery continued well beyond the accident, but does not give a final recovery date or a current health update. ABC’s One Plus One profile, broadcast in December 2017, also identifies a 2016 concussion injury and says Leunig was still recovering at the time. It corroborates the injury and ongoing recovery, not all the details of the accident or hospital treatment described in the later PerthNow interview. Watch the ABC profile.

How did the injury affect him?
In the 2018 PerthNow interview, Leunig said the injury had affected both his memory and his sense of identity: “It had a big impact on my whole sense of self, my memory.” He also recalled feeling vulnerable and unlike himself: “I was quite disturbed by it, because I felt very vulnerable and not myself.”
Trying to keep working while he felt that way became stressful. His account was not only about the physical injury; it also described the unsettling experience of not feeling like himself during recovery.

What did he say about ageing, illness and life?
Leunig told PerthNow that seeing people face illness in hospital had made a strong impression on him. He reflected on their courage: “It takes courage to grow old or to work your way through illness, it really does.” The experience contributed to a renewed appreciation of life, as he described it in that interview; it is his personal reflection, not a claim that everyone responds to illness or injury in the same way.

“Near-death” is the framing used for the accident in the PerthNow feature’s headline. The reporting describes a serious head injury and its aftermath; it does not identify the event as a clinically defined near-death experience.
