The first female mayor of Tunis

Souad Abderrahim made headlines when she was elected as the first woman mayor of a capital city in the Arab world. Despite Tunisia being considered relatively progressive in terms of gender equality, women still face significant challenges, and patriarchal structures persist even among Tunisia’s political elite.

The documentary Third Person explores Abderrahim’s journey to becoming mayor of Tunis, as well as the challenges she has faced since being elected. Some Tunisians have questioned whether a woman is capable of taking on such a difficult job, while others have suggested that her success is due to the support of the conservative and Muslim Ennahda Party. But with her strength and resilience, Abderrahim has become a role model for women across the Arab world, showing that progress is possible even in the face of daunting obstacles.
