Drinking To Oblivion is a powerful new documentary by Louis Theroux, released in 2020. It takes viewers into the lives of individuals who are struggling with extreme alcohol addiction in the United Kingdom. Through his time spent at King’s College Hospital in South London, Louis delves deep into the world of alcohol dependency and attempts to understand the mindset behind its sufferers.
Alcohol is one of the most commonly abused substances in Britain, and yet many are unaware of just how severe it can be for those who become addicted. Drinking To Oblivion offers an eye-opening insight into this issue. One particularly heartbreaking example is Joe, a 32-year-old man whose alcoholism had led him to be admitted to hospital with serious health issues. Despite being given a stark warning that drinking could possibly kill him, Joe still leaves the hospital and heads for vodka – emphasizing just how hard it can be for some people to free themselves from their addiction.

The film also shows us why some people become trapped by alcohol dependency in the first place – it’s not as simple as ‘just stopping drinking’ for them. We see individuals and their families struggle through difficult decisions regarding their addictions all while battling through feelings of guilt and despair.
