Louis Theroux’s ‘The Most Hated Family in America’ is one of the most powerful documentaries ever produced. It dives deep into the heart of the Westboro Baptist Church, a fundamentalist Christian group based in Topeka, Kansas and headed up by Fred Phelps. The WBC is known for its extreme views on the LGBT community, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Sweden, Ireland and Canada – which it expresses on its websites GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesTheWorld.com.
The documentary reveals how this controversial organization operates and how they are capable of such extreme behavior. Louis Theroux has managed to gain access to the inner workings of this church – from attending their services to interviewing family members – he unveils a unique insight into their beliefs and lifestyle. His interviews are sometimes confrontational yet intelligent with an underlying layer of understanding and respect between both parties.
From those living within the WBC’s walls to people who have had to fight against them in public, viewers are left feeling shocked at their attitudes but also with a greater understanding of the whole situation. This documentary isn’t just about shock value – it also brings us face-to-face with some extremely complex issues that continue to challenge our society today.
So if you’re looking for something different or maybe you want to understand more about a religion that so many people seem unable to comprehend then ‘The Most Hated Family in America’ is definitely worth watching! It will provide you with an illuminating experience which will stay with you long after it ends!
