Reuters reported that she appeared overwhelmed when her name was called and wept through her speech. Her words centred on gratitude: she opened with “My heart is full of gratitude” and spoke about performers showing up for one another. The emotional moment and that message are what made the speech memorable.
What Saldaña won
The award was for supporting performance in a motion picture, for her role in Emilia Pérez. CNN’s transcript of the ceremony calls the category “Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture,” and ABC News uses the official-style wording “best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture.” Both describe the same award. It is not a lead-actor prize, and it should not be described as one.
The win was also a first for her at the Globes. ABC News reports that it was her first Golden Globe nomination and her first win. CNN’s January 6 transcript identifies her as a first-time nominee and notes that her win was the first of the night.
What she said on stage
The CNN transcript records the full opening of her speech, which is the most complete text available. Her first lines were:

Why the tears drew attention
The transcript records her words but not her demeanour. The emotional description comes from Reuters, which reported that Saldaña “appeared overwhelmed” when she was named the winner and “wept through her speech.” That reporting is the basis for the emotional framing in the headline. If you are quoting the tears, attribute them to Reuters rather than to the transcript.
The film behind the award
Reuters describes Saldaña’s role as a lawyer who helps a Mexican drug lord begin a new life and transition to a woman. The sources available for this story do not go further into the film’s production, release history, reception, or themes, so this article does not either. For the film’s own details, consult its official listings or established film databases.
Where to watch Emilia Pérez now
Reporting from the awards period linked Emilia Pérez to Netflix. That is a detail from early 2025 and does not establish where the film is available today. Streaming availability differs by country and changes over time, so check a current streaming guide for your region before relying on any platform.
The coverage examined here supports the award, her reaction, and the speech excerpts above. For a complete account of the ceremony, the CNN and ABC News transcripts and reports, and the Reuters report, are the primary sources for the quoted material.
