Zero Day is worth considering for Robert De Niro’s commanding central role and its timely questions about truth, power and disinformation. Its six-episode conspiracy story reaches across government, technology, Wall Street, the media and one family; that breadth gives the thriller scope, but also leaves it at risk of losing focus.
What is Zero Day about?
Netflix’s six-episode limited series follows George Mullen (Robert De Niro), a former U.S. president called out of retirement to investigate a deadly cyberattack. The inquiry draws him into a web of conspiracy and disinformation, where political authority, technology and financial interests meet. The series premiered on Netflix on February 20, 2025, and episodes run 43 to 59 minutes.
Co-creators Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Michael S. Schmidt frame the story around a nation under pressure. Newman described its premise as the aftermath of an attack that “kills thousands of people” and threatens to push the country “over the edge.” The scale is deliberate: the investigation is not just a puzzle about who carried out an attack, but a way to examine how crisis can be used, shaped or worsened by people seeking power.
The series is fictional. Its subject may evoke real concerns about cyberattacks and public trust, but the available official material does not establish that its attack is technically realistic. It is best approached as a political thriller about the consequences of a crisis, not as a technical account of how a cyber incident works.

Why Robert De Niro is the series’ strongest asset
De Niro gives the sprawling premise a human center. As Mullen, he has to embody both the authority of a former president and the vulnerability of a man carrying private burdens. The role’s appeal lies in that tension: he is asked to find answers in public while the story also considers what enormous responsibility costs him and his family.
That personal dimension is central to the show’s stated aims. Oppenheim said the series looks at “the cost of power” for people taking on immense challenges and what that means for their families. De Niro’s presence helps connect that intimate question to the larger machinery of the investigation. His performance is the clearest reason to stay with a story whose many moving parts do not always feel equally focused.

Mullen’s stated principle is to be candid with the public rather than evade difficult facts. De Niro described that as “the spine of my character in the show.” It gives the character a direct moral challenge: can truth survive when every institution has an interest in controlling the story?
Does the political conspiracy hold together?
Zero Day takes on a lot at once. Mullen’s inquiry touches government, technology, Wall Street and media, while the story also tracks the effects of power on family life. That range suits a plot about disinformation, because the truth in such a story is not confined to one office or one suspect. It also creates the show’s main unevenness: the more threads it introduces, the harder it is to keep the central investigation feeling like the sole dramatic line.

The result is an ambitious rather than a narrowly plotted thriller. Viewers looking for a contained mystery may find the political and personal strands competing for attention; those interested in the way public crises move through institutions may value the broader canvas. The six-episode format gives the series a defined endpoint, though a limited episode count alone cannot guarantee that every strand receives the same weight.
How the ensemble supports Mullen’s story
The surrounding cast represents the political and personal pressures converging on Mullen. Angela Bassett plays current President Evelyn Mitchell, Jesse Plemons plays Roger Carlson, and Lizzy Caplan plays Mullen’s daughter, Alexandra. Their roles place the investigation within both the current administration and the former president’s family, rather than treating it as an isolated intelligence puzzle.

Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens and Matthew Modine are also among the principal cast. The ensemble gives the series room to stage competing perspectives on power and crisis. The trade-off is familiar to expansive political dramas: supporting characters can deepen the world, but a crowded field can pull emphasis away from the central performance. De Niro remains the anchor around which the series’ other pressures make sense.

Netflix reported that the show recorded 19.1 million views in its first four days and ranked second on the platform’s English TV list. Who should watch Zero Day?
- Consider it if: you want a finite political thriller led by De Niro, or are interested in stories about disinformation, institutional power and the personal costs of public responsibility.
- Temper expectations if: you want a tightly confined investigation with little beyond the central mystery. The series deliberately ranges across multiple institutions and family dynamics.
- Where to watch: Netflix lists Zero Day as a 2025 TV-MA thriller and limited series. Availability and subscription terms can vary by region.
The series brings its guiding questions into focus: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, and are the forces driving that crisis beyond our control—or of our own making? Its answer is less compelling as a consistently streamlined conspiracy than as a vehicle for De Niro and a broad look at who gets to shape the truth.
