The intimate scene in Challengers involving Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist was not filmed as spontaneous sex. Its apparent heat came from preparation, choreography, trust, camera work, and the performers’ understanding of the triangle at the center of Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama.

That is the useful takeaway from the cast’s discussion with Extra, published April 22, 2024. Zendaya, O’Connor, and Faist spoke about the film’s much-publicized three-way encounter, the embarrassment that can accompany intimate filming, and the practical details audiences do not see. A follow-up Extra interview on April 24 returned to what helped Zendaya feel safe and how the actors prepared for the steamy sequence.
What the scene means in Challengers
Challengers is a fictional relationship drama written by Justin Kuritzkes and directed by Guadagnino. Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy who becomes the coach of her husband, Art Donaldson, played by Faist. O’Connor plays Patrick Zweig, Art’s former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.

The film’s central match brings the three characters’ unresolved history back into public view. The intimate encounter is therefore not an isolated provocation or a detachable “sex scene.” It is one of the moments in which the film makes the attraction, resentment, competition, and shifting power among Tashi, Art, and Patrick visible.
The film is also not based on a true story. Its characters and relationships are fictional, although the screenplay was shaped by extensive research into professional tennis and by real-world tennis influences.
Why the scene looks spontaneous when it was carefully controlled
Film intimacy can appear private and impulsive on screen while being highly public and technical on set. The actors’ comments, together with O’Connor’s later explanation of intimate filming, point to a process involving rehearsal, choreography, blocking, lighting, microphones, cameras, and a full crew.
O’Connor has compared filming sex scenes with performing action, stunt, or dance work. That comparison is especially helpful here: the performers have to know where their bodies move, when they move, what the camera can see, and how the scene’s emotional changes will register in a series of planned shots.
In other words, the three actors’ chemistry is real performance—not evidence that the performers engaged in unsimulated sex. The awkwardness they discussed is part of the production reality: an intimate scene may require actors to repeat precise movements while technicians adjust focus, light, sound, and camera position.

The available reporting supports describing the sequence as rehearsed, choreographed, and managed with attention to safety and trust. It does not verify that a particular named intimacy coordinator worked on this production, so that claim should not be added to the scene’s behind-the-scenes history without separate confirmation.
“The tennis is the sex”
O’Connor’s promotional shorthand—that “the tennis is the sex”—captures how Challengers broadens its erotic language beyond the bedroom. The phrase is interpretive rather than literal. The film uses rallies, pursuit, interruption, body positioning, spectatorship, and competition to express the characters’ desire for and hostility toward one another.
On the court, a player can approach, retreat, redirect an opponent, seize control, or force a response. Those actions work simultaneously as sports tactics and as reflections of the relationships. A change in direction can feel like a change in allegiance; a rally can become a contest over who is watching whom; and the audience’s attention becomes part of the tension.
That is why the three-way intimate scene has more force when viewed as part of the film’s complete design. The bedroom material is one expression of the triangle’s energy. The tennis court is another—and in many scenes, the court becomes the film’s most elaborate stage for attraction and rivalry.
How the tennis preparation made the intimacy credible
The movie’s erotic athleticism depends on the tennis looking convincing. ATP Tour reported that Brad and Kim Gilbert worked as consultants, with Brad Gilbert leading training for the cast. Zendaya trained with him for seven weeks in Malibu, while Faist trained with a coach in Columbus, Ohio. The actors also spent several months preparing for the production, using tennis clips and match work to inhabit their roles.

Kodak’s production account described the tennis action as storyboarded. Camera positions, movement, and blocking were developed not just to capture vigorous sport but to communicate the characters’ changing emotions toward one another. Brad Gilbert helped choreograph rallies and movement around the court, meaning that the tennis was built around the personal dynamics of the triangle rather than inserted as generic sports coverage.
This preparation does not mean that tennis training directly prepared the actors for sexual activity. It means that the cast developed a shared physical vocabulary—timing, pursuit, balance, distance, reaction, and control—that helped the film connect athletic performance with emotional and erotic tension.

The real tennis ideas behind the fictional story
Kuritzkes’s screenplay grew out of research into tennis and drew influence from Andre Agassi’s memoir Open. The writer was also interested in Brad Gilbert’s unusual decision to enter a low-level Challenger tournament after reaching the top of professional tennis.
That background gives the tournament in Challengers more meaning than a simple setting for the final match. A Challenger event can represent a professional fall, a test of identity, and a pressure chamber. In the film, the competition forces private history into a public sporting environment, where every exchange can be watched, judged, and interpreted.
The title’s “challenger” idea therefore works on several levels. It describes the event itself, the players’ professional position, and the characters’ repeated attempts to challenge one another emotionally. Desire and status are never entirely separate.

What Zendaya’s comments add to the conversation
Zendaya’s discussion of the sequence is valuable because it shifts attention away from the scene’s publicity and toward the conditions that made it possible. The question is not simply why the scene looks provocative. It is how performers create that effect while working within a controlled production environment.
Her comments about safety and preparation underline the importance of communication and trust. The scene has to be technically repeatable, emotionally legible, and bounded by what the performers have agreed to do. That discipline is easy for viewers to miss because successful choreography disappears into the finished image.
The same principle applies to the tennis. Viewers are meant to experience the match as immediate and volatile, even though its movements were planned, practiced, filmed from carefully selected positions, and shaped in post-production. In both the intimate sequence and the sporting sequences, the film turns control into the appearance of spontaneity.
Where to watch or own Challengers
Amazon’s official film coverage identifies Challengers as an Amazon MGM Studios drama and lists it as available to stream on Prime Video. Streaming catalogs and licensing windows vary by country, so viewers should check the current listing in their market rather than assume universal availability.
The film also received a DVD and Blu-ray release on July 9, 2024. For viewers who want a physical copy, the documented home-media option is the Challengers Blu-ray. The available evidence confirms Blu-ray and DVD editions; it does not establish a 4K UHD physical release, so the Blu-ray should not be described as 4K.

Zendaya’s Extra interview is best understood as a behind-the-scenes explanation of how a provocative intimate moment becomes controlled film performance. The scene’s impact depends on the chemistry among Zendaya, O’Connor, and Faist, but its deeper meaning comes from the way Challengers places that chemistry inside a choreographed tennis world.

Guadagnino has described the tennis ball as an “ephemeral, invisible force of desire.” That idea explains the film’s method: desire does not belong to one location or one pair of characters. It travels through rallies, glances, bodies, pauses, competition, and the shifting attention of everyone watching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist have real sex while filming Challengers?
No. The available behind-the-scenes reporting describes a rehearsed, choreographed production involving blocking, cameras, lighting, microphones, and a full crew. It does not support a claim that the actors had unsimulated sex on camera.
What happens in the Challengers three-way scene?
The scene is an intimate encounter involving Tashi, Art, and Patrick. Its significance comes from the characters’ complicated fictional relationship and the film’s larger themes of desire, rivalry, and control—not from treating the actors’ private lives as part of the story.

What does “the tennis is the sex” mean in Challengers?
O’Connor’s phrase means that the film expresses attraction and conflict through tennis as well as through explicitly intimate scenes. Rallies, positioning, pursuit, interruption, and spectatorship become physical expressions of the characters’ relationships.
Is Challengers based on a true story?
The film is fictional. Kuritzkes researched tennis and drew inspiration from Andre Agassi’s memoir Open and from Brad Gilbert’s decision to play in a lower-level Challenger tournament after reaching the top of professional tennis.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Challengers intimate scene was a carefully rehearsed and choreographed performance, not unsimulated sex. Its intensity works because the film treats tennis itself as another language for desire, rivalry, and control.
