Google made 30-second non-skippable ads available for connected-TV campaigns in March 2026, and YouTube creators have also lost some control over which ad formats run on newly uploaded long-form videos. But YouTube has not announced that every creator must run a non-skippable ad on every video, and the widely reported 90-second ads were later attributed to a timer bug.
What YouTube changed—and what it did not
“YouTube is forcing creators to run non-skippable ads” compresses two separate developments into one claim. For creators, the confirmed change is less choice over individual ad formats on newly uploaded long-form videos when monetization is enabled. For television viewers, Google introduced a campaign option that includes 30-second non-skippable ads designed specifically for connected-TV devices.
- Confirmed: Google’s 30-second non-skippable format is available for connected-TV campaigns.
- Confirmed: YouTube no longer gives creators separate pre-roll and post-roll format switches for new long-form uploads.
- Not confirmed: A universal 90-second non-skippable ad format.
- Still available to creators: Turning monetization off on an individual video and managing mid-roll placements.
A creator’s monetization setting does not guarantee an ad will be served. The ads a viewer encounters can vary with device, location, account status, advertiser demand and other delivery conditions.

How creator ad controls changed
In November 2023, YouTube simplified ad settings for newly uploaded long-form videos. When creators enable monetization, they no longer choose separately whether to allow pre-roll, post-roll, skippable or non-skippable ads. YouTube says its system selects formats when appropriate; its stated rationale was to simplify setup and improve creator revenue. That rationale is not a guarantee that every channel or video will earn more.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Existing videos kept their previous ad-format choices unless creators changed their monetization settings. The simplification did not remove mid-roll controls: creators still have a say in where mid-roll opportunities are placed. It also did not remove the option to switch monetization off for a video. YouTube’s monetization help page describes the format changes and remaining controls.
Turn monetization off for one video
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Content from the left menu.
- Open the relevant video’s monetization control.
- Choose Off in the monetization drop-down, then select Save.
That avoids YouTube advertising on that video, but also gives up its advertising revenue. It is not a way to choose skippable ads only.
What Google’s 30-second TV ads are
On March 2, 2026, Google announced the global availability of VRC Non-Skip campaigns in Google Ads and Display & Video 360. The campaign can use six-second bumpers, 15-second standard ads and 30-second non-skippable ads that Google identifies as connected-TV-only. Google says its system uses AI to optimize among the formats. The announcement is about advertising inventory for YouTube on connected-TV devices—not the separate YouTube TV live-television service. Google’s Display & Video 360 documentation says non-skippable ads may run before, during or after another video. It specifies video creatives from five to 30 seconds and says 16-to-30-second non-skippable ads show primarily on connected TVs. “Primarily” does not mean exclusively, and availability of a campaign format does not mean every TV viewer receives it.
Google’s general format guidance also distinguishes skippable in-stream ads, which can appear on computers, mobile devices, TVs and game consoles, from bumper ads, which are non-skippable and up to six seconds. The 30-second CTV product should not be treated as proof of a new universal policy for phones and desktops. See YouTube’s ad-format definitions.
Why viewers object—and what the complaints establish
A non-skippable ad takes away the immediate option to skip. A 30-second interruption can feel especially long before a short video, and a break may contain multiple ads, so the overall interruption can exceed the length of any single creative. On a television app, switching away, closing the player or using browser-based controls is often less convenient than on a computer.

The change also feeds a perception that YouTube is making the free experience less comfortable to encourage paid ad-free viewing. That is a reasonable interpretation of the pressure viewers feel, but it does not establish why any particular ad appeared or prove that every viewer sees longer or more frequent breaks.

These are self-selected accounts, not a representative measure of how often ads appear across YouTube. Viewers may also conflate creator-placed mid-rolls, YouTube-selected pre-rolls and advertiser campaign formats, even though different decisions shape each.
Why creators are concerned
The creator-facing issue is reduced control, not evidence that every creator has been ordered to run 30-second TV ads. Creators who monetize new long-form uploads cannot promise that YouTube will use only skippable pre-roll or post-roll formats. YouTube makes more of the format-selection decision, while creators retain controls such as video-level monetization and mid-roll placement.

That division can leave creators bearing some of the audience’s frustration for interruptions they did not individually select. Turning off monetization may suit a sensitive video or a creator’s priorities, but it removes advertising income from that upload. YouTube’s stated revenue rationale is an optimization aim, not a universal earnings formula: actual revenue depends on factors such as audience, geography, device, ad suitability, demand and whether an ad is served.
The documented control change supports describing creator concerns; it does not establish a coordinated or universal creator revolt against the March 2026 CTV rollout. Advertisers gain an opportunity to deliver a complete message, but non-skippability guarantees neither attention nor goodwill.

- On April 8, reports described 90-second countdowns on TV viewers’ screens. 9to5Google covered the initial reports, and Android Authority reported on the claims.
- On April 9, Team YouTube said the company did not have or test a 90-second non-skippable ad format.
- On April 10, YouTube attributed the inaccurate, higher timers to a bug and said a fix was rolling out, according to 9to5Google’s account of the company’s response.
The available official ad specifications list non-skippable creatives of five to 30 seconds, with 16-to-30-second ads shown primarily on connected TVs. A reported “90-second ad break” could also describe multiple ads or an inaccurate on-screen timer rather than one 90-second creative. The reports should not be presented as proof that YouTube launched a 90-second format.
What creators and viewers can do
For creators
- Review each video’s monetization setting and check mid-roll placements for long-form videos.
- Use retention data to see where viewers leave, while avoiding the assumption that every change reflects an ad.
- Explain the difference between YouTube-served advertising and a creator-read sponsorship or embedded brand integration.
- Turn monetization off selectively when the viewing context matters more than advertising income, and avoid promising that every platform-served ad will be skippable.
For viewers
- YouTube Premium is the official paid option for ad-free viewing where available. Its features, plan terms and prices vary by country and can change; check YouTube’s official Premium page for current local details.
- Remember that YouTube on a connected TV may deliver a different advertising experience from the same service on a phone or computer.
- Official apps and settings are the most straightforward option. Do not assume third-party ad blockers will work consistently across browsers, mobile apps and TV apps; compatibility and enforcement can change. Unofficial modified clients can also carry security, privacy, account and terms-of-service risks.
Why connected TVs are the focus
The March 2026 announcement is part of Google’s effort to bring television-style ad formats to YouTube viewing on the living-room screen. For Google and advertisers, a non-skippable unit offers an opportunity for a complete message; for viewers, a TV interface makes the interruption harder to bypass. For creators, automated delivery can mean more eligible ad opportunities but less influence over exactly which formats accompany a monetized upload.
