The update brought rounded thumbnails and controls, a darker dark theme, ambient color effects and new viewing tools. YouTube did not officially call it a Material You redesign; that label describes a resemblance noted by outside observers.
Why it is called Material You-inspired
Material You is Google’s personalization-focused design language, introduced for Android 12 and newer Material Design guidance. Google described features including refreshed visual styling and, in supported Android contexts, colors that can match a device’s wallpaper. Google’s explanation of Material You provides that context.
YouTube’s October 2022 announcement called its update a new look and a design refresh, not an official Material You rebuild. Rounded shapes, pill-like controls and color-responsive effects made the comparison understandable, but “Material You-inspired” is an observer’s shorthand, not YouTube’s formal name for the update. 9to5Google’s prelaunch report used that comparison while describing elements still in testing.
What changed in the 2022 refresh
Rounded shapes and clearer controls
Video thumbnails, buttons and other controls received rounder treatments. The subscribe button changed from its familiar red appearance to a high-contrast black-and-white design with a new shape; the subscription function itself remained the same. YouTube said its design team tested different shapes and found rounded options friendlier, more inviting and more comfortable to tap. It presented the change as an evolution of YouTube’s visual language, not a complete redesign of the service.

Like, share and download controls were reformatted to draw less attention away from the video, and links in video descriptions became buttons. Playlist pages also received related color treatment and additional playlist detail. YouTube described the broader goal as making the player more prominent and the viewing page less visually distracting.
A darker dark theme and ambient mode
YouTube made its dark theme darker. Ambient mode adds a subtle glow around the player, using colors associated with the video to make the watch page feel more immersive. YouTube described the effect as an attempt to evoke the colored light a screen casts in a dark room. It also extended the color treatment to playlists.

The effect is a visual treatment, not a playback enhancement, and YouTube announced it for dark-theme experiences on web and mobile. In a later design explanation, the company said the effect used thumbnail and storyboard assets that were stretched and blurred; it also discussed different treatments for higher- and lower-end devices. That is more specific than saying the background samples every live video frame. The effect may appeal to viewers who want a more immersive page, while those who prefer a plain background may find it distracting. YouTube’s design explanation covers its visual rationale and implementation.
New ways to navigate videos
- Pinch to zoom: On iOS and Android phones, spread two fingers to enlarge the video while watching. YouTube said the enlarged view remains after the gesture ends. TechCrunch reported that the feature had first been tested with Premium users before the wider rollout; that is rollout history, not evidence of a continuing Premium requirement. Zooming can crop parts of a video when its aspect ratio differs from the phone’s screen. (TechCrunch’s launch coverage)
- Precise seeking: While dragging or swiping to seek, viewers can reveal a row of thumbnails to help locate a moment. It can be useful when returning to a particular step in a tutorial, but YouTube described thumbnail-assisted navigation—not frame-by-frame editing controls. It is most helpful when the preview images make the video’s moments easy to distinguish.
YouTube’s October 24 announcement also discussed long-press seeking and replay indicators as part of its viewing improvements.

Which platforms received which features?
YouTube announced availability feature by feature, rather than promising that every client would have an identical interface. The table reflects the platforms named in the October 2022 announcement.
| Feature | Platforms named at launch |
|---|---|
| Ambient mode | Web and mobile, in dark theme |
| Darker dark theme | Web, mobile and Smart TVs |
| Pinch to zoom | iOS and Android phones |
| Precise seeking with thumbnail previews | Desktop and mobile |
This feature list does not establish identical availability on mobile web, tablets, YouTube Music or YouTube Kids, and it does not show the complete state of every YouTube client today. Rollout timing and interfaces can differ by device and client.

What was tested before the announcement?
In September 2022, 9to5Google reported seeing tests of rounded topic controls and thumbnails, pill-shaped action buttons and a search field, a blacker dark theme, and changes to Shorts and Explore. The report described a homepage redesign in testing, not features guaranteed to reach everyone in the final rollout. YouTube’s formal announcement the following month is the clearer source for the changes it actually described.
When did it roll out, and is it still “new”?
YouTube announced the refresh on October 24, 2022, with a rollout across supported experiences rather than an immediate, simultaneous change for every viewer. In a November 28, 2022 design post, YouTube said the cleaner, more immersive update had rolled out at the end of October.

As of 2026, “YouTube has a new look” without a date can give the wrong impression. The available announcements document the 2022 refresh, not every subsequent change or the current interface on each device. A viewer seeing rounded thumbnails also should not assume that every related feature is present in that client.
