Before making a YouTube video public, check that its details and audience designation are accurate, add any useful captions or video elements, review YouTube’s available checks, and choose the right visibility or schedule. Uploading and publishing are separate: a video can stay private or unlisted while you review it, then go public when it is ready.
What to check before publishing a YouTube video
- Details and audience: Confirm the video information is accurate and designate whether it is made for kids.
- Accessibility and video elements: Add captions or subtitles when useful, and consider cards or an end screen where they fit.
- Checks: Review copyright checks and, if you are eligible for the YouTube Partner Program, ad-suitability controls.
- Visibility and timing: Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private, or schedule the video for later.
These are checks, not a guarantee that every issue has been resolved. YouTube’s interface and policies can change, so follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio.
Review the video details and audience
In YouTube Studio, open the upload’s Details step and review the information attached to the video. Check that its title, description, thumbnail, and other details accurately represent the documentary and do not promise content the video does not contain. Confirm the audience designation before proceeding.
Decide accurately whether it is made for kids
YouTube requires creators to indicate whether a video is made for kids. Make the decision based on the video’s intended and actual audience, considering the full context rather than one isolated feature. YouTube’s guidance identifies factors such as subject matter, intended audience, child performers, characters or toys, language, activities, songs, stories, and other evidence of who the video is directed toward. No single factor automatically decides every case; creators are expected to know their audience and designate accurately.

A video being suitable for families, or likely to be watched by some children, does not by itself settle the question. Do not choose a designation simply to preserve engagement features or monetization options. YouTube says the designation supports compliance with COPPA and other applicable laws; its help material is not legal advice.
Know what the designation changes
Made-for-kids videos have some features unavailable or restricted, including comments, notifications, cards, end screens, personalized ads, and other engagement or monetization features. Treat these as consequences of the audience setting, not as reasons to label a video inaccurately.

Add captions and suitable video elements
Add subtitles or captions if they are available and useful to your viewers. They can make dialogue and narration accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and help viewers follow a documentary when sound is unavailable. Review captions for names, specialist terms, dates, and quotations rather than assuming an automated transcript is error-free.
Cards and end screens can point viewers to related material when appropriate. YouTube’s upload guidance allows an end screen only on a video that is at least 25 seconds long. If the audience designation or video format makes an element unavailable, do not try to work around the restriction; check that the setting itself is correct.

Review YouTube checks without treating them as clearance
On the Checks step, YouTube screens for copyright issues. Eligible YouTube Partner Program creators may also see ad-suitability review and self-certification controls; these are not universal monetization settings. If a claimed segment appears, review the information and decide whether removing or replacing material or disputing the claim is appropriate for the specific situation.
A successful check is not proof that you have permission to use every element in the video. YouTube says copyright check results are not final: later manual claims, strikes, or changes to settings can affect a video. Checks can continue in the background, and YouTube allows publication while they are running. If you would rather wait for the available checks to finish, keep the video private or unlisted and return to publish it later.

Choose Public, Unlisted, Private, or scheduled publication
Visibility determines who can watch the video, not whether you have finished reviewing it. Choose the option that matches your release plan:

Access details can depend on YouTube’s current sharing controls, so check the prompts in Studio before relying on a particular person being able to view a private video.

Publish now or schedule it
Publish now when the video is ready and you want it available immediately. Schedule it when the video is complete but should become public at a later time; verify the scheduled date and time shown in Studio before confirming.
Uploading a file is not the same as publishing it. YouTube describes upload as importing the video file to the platform; publishing makes it available for anyone to watch. You can upload privately or unlisted, then publish later. As a result, the upload date and the public publish date may differ. YouTube states that the publish date shown beneath a public video is set using Pacific Standard Time, so do not assume that the displayed date is a guarantee of how every viewer’s local date will appear.
Final pre-publish check
- The details accurately describe the documentary.
- The made-for-kids setting reflects the video and its intended audience.
- Captions, cards, and an end screen have been added where useful and available.
- You have reviewed the checks that apply to your account and understand they are not final clearance.
- The selected visibility and timing match your release plan.
