YouTube TV did not lose CBS in February 2025. A short-term extension announced on February 13 kept Paramount channels on the service while negotiations continued; a completed deal followed on February 15. The “March Madness still hangs in the balance” concern was real when the original story appeared on February 14, but the immediate crisis was resolved the next day.
How the blackout scare unfolded
- February 12, 2025: YouTube warned that Paramount programming could become unavailable on YouTube TV after February 13 if the companies failed to reach an agreement.
- February 13: At about 8 p.m. Pacific Time, YouTube TV announced a short-term extension. Subscribers could continue watching Paramount channels, including CBS, while talks proceeded. The announcement did not disclose how long the extension would last.
- February 14: The headline’s warning reflected the uncertainty that remained: the channels were still available, but the temporary extension was not yet a final agreement.
- February 15: YouTube TV announced a deal to continue carrying Paramount programming. The two announcements and the final outcome are documented in YouTube’s programming update.
The dispute concerned distribution terms and fees. YouTube TV said it was seeking an agreement without passing additional costs to subscribers; the companies did not publicly disclose the final deal’s financial terms or duration in the cited announcements.
Why CBS put March Madness at risk
Paramount owns CBS, which carries major portions of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, including the Final Four and national championship game. If negotiations had failed and CBS had gone dark, YouTube TV subscribers could have lost access to those CBS-televised games.
That would not necessarily have meant losing the entire tournament. March Madness is carried across multiple broadcasters, so the specific risk was losing games shown on CBS—not every tournament game. The contemporary February 14 coverage captured the concern during the temporary-extension period.

What subscribers could have lost
This was a Paramount carriage dispute, not a CBS-only negotiation. YouTube TV’s subscriber notice identified the following potential effects:
- Live CBS and CBS Sports, as well as Nickelodeon and other Paramount channels.
- Access to existing Library recordings from affected channels.
- Certain related add-ons, including Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and BET+.
The channel and recording details appear in the YouTube TV community notice. Local-channel availability can vary by market, so the CBS feed available to a subscriber depends on their location.

What the extension and proposed $8 credit meant
The February 13 extension kept Paramount channels and existing Library recordings available while negotiations continued. It was an interim reprieve, not a publicly described long-term renewal; YouTube TV did not state its expiry date in that update.
Before the extension, YouTube TV said it would offer an $8 credit if Paramount content became unavailable for an extended period. The announcement did not establish that every subscriber would automatically receive a credit, or specify whether it would be one-time or recurring. Once the February 15 agreement was announced, the proposed credit was largely moot; the cited notices do not confirm that it was issued.

- Another live-TV provider: Could carry a viewer’s local CBS affiliate, but channel lineups, costs and other carriage disputes vary. Check the specific local station and sports networks before switching.
- Over-the-air antenna: May receive a local CBS affiliate without a live-TV subscription where reception is adequate. It does not replace cable networks such as CBS Sports Network.
How to assess a future carriage dispute
- Check the provider’s official notice for the deadline and whether an extension or final deal has actually been announced.
- Look beyond live channels: confirm whether recordings, add-ons or other services are also affected.
- Check local CBS availability for your market rather than assuming every subscriber receives the same feed.
- Match a backup to what you need: a full live-TV lineup, local CBS, or tournament-specific viewing are different requirements.
- Before canceling or subscribing elsewhere, verify the replacement’s channels, game access, DVR rules and total cost.
