Yes, YouTube TV offers 4K—but only for selected programs, and you need the 4K Plus add-on to watch them. The add-on also includes unlimited simultaneous streams on your home Wi-Fi network and downloads of eligible DVR recordings to a phone or tablet. It is most useful if you regularly watch events listed in YouTube TV’s 4K guide, have a busy household, or need offline recordings—not if you expect every channel or sports event to be in 4K.

What is YouTube TV 4K Plus?

4K Plus is an add-on to a YouTube TV membership, not a separate television service or an upgrade that changes every channel’s picture quality. It combines three features:

  • Selected 4K programming: eligible live and on-demand programs can stream in 4K.
  • Unlimited simultaneous streams at home: the benefit applies on the household’s home Wi-Fi network, not automatically everywhere you travel.
  • Offline DVR downloads: eligible recordings can be downloaded in the YouTube TV mobile app for viewing on a phone or tablet.

The base YouTube TV plan does not unlock 4K streams. A program may still be available in a lower resolution without 4K Plus. YouTube TV’s 4K Plus help page explains the add-on’s current features and limitations.

How much does 4K Plus cost?

On August 18, 2026, YouTube TV advertised its main plan at $82.99 per month. Tom’s Guide and CableTV.com listed 4K Plus at $9.99 per month on that date, which would put the two subscriptions at $92.98 per month before taxes or promotional discounts. Those third-party listings are a dated price snapshot, not a guaranteed rate for every account.

YouTube TV says add-on pricing can vary and directs subscribers to check Settings > Membership in the app for the price on their account. Promotions, free trials and billing arrangements can also affect what a new or existing subscriber pays. Check the current amount before adding it. YouTube TV’s plan page, Tom’s Guide’s YouTube TV listing and CableTV.com’s add-on listing provide the cited price information.

What can you watch in 4K?

YouTube TV offers 4K for selected live and on-demand programs, not for the service as a whole. Availability changes with the network, event and schedule, so a permanent channel list can mislead: a network might have one event in 4K and another in HD. Check the individual program rather than assuming that a network’s presence means every broadcast is in 4K.

YouTube TV’s documentation confirms selected 4K programming but does not promise that every 4K program also includes HDR. Treat resolution and HDR as separate features and confirm HDR support for the specific program and device if it matters to you.

How to find 4K programs

  1. Search YouTube TV for 4K, then look for the 4K icon beside eligible programs.
  2. Open the Live tab to browse upcoming eligible programming. YouTube TV says the guide can show programs over the next 10 days.
  3. Open a program’s details and check its playback quality options. You can also browse a network page for its listed eligible programs.

The app is the most useful place to check what is available now; listings change as schedules do. A channel that is absent from the 4K guide may simply have no upcoming 4K program in that 10-day window. YouTube TV’s help page describes these discovery options.

Which devices support YouTube TV in 4K?

Being able to run the YouTube TV app does not necessarily mean a device can play its 4K streams. YouTube TV lists these categories and models for 4K Plus; check its current compatibility information for your exact model, since generation and content restrictions matter.

Device category YouTube TV 4K compatibility details
Smart TVs 4K Android TV models, including Sony Bravia; Samsung, LG and Hisense 4K smart TVs from 2019 or later.
Google TV and Chromecast Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer.
Roku 4K Roku streaming devices.
Apple TV Apple TV 4K from 2021; some eligible content may have limitations.
Amazon Fire TV Amazon Fire 4K Stick, first generation from 2018.
Other devices PS4 Pro and Nvidia Shield; some eligible content may have limitations on PS4 Pro.

YouTube TV also supports its general app on a wider selection of hardware, including Apple TV, Roku devices and TVs, Fire TV devices, Google TV devices, Samsung, LG, Vizio and Hisense smart TVs, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series consoles, TiVo Stream 4K and Xfinity Flex. That broader app compatibility does not establish 4K compatibility for each device. Consult the separate 4K device list and general YouTube TV device list before relying on a particular model.

Internet, TV and HDMI requirements

  • Internet: YouTube TV recommends at least 25 Mbps download speed for 4K viewing. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, interference, ISP congestion, device performance and network quality can all affect playback.
  • Display and streaming device: You need a 4K TV and a compatible 4K streaming device or TV app. A 4K screen by itself is not enough.
  • HDMI connection: YouTube TV’s troubleshooting guidance calls for an HDCP 2.2-compliant HDMI cable. A receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch in the signal path can also cause compatibility trouble. Connecting the streaming device directly to the TV can help isolate it.

These requirements and further troubleshooting guidance are on YouTube TV’s 4K help page and its internet connection help page.

How to confirm that playback is actually 4K

  1. Start a program identified as 4K.
  2. Open the player controls and select the video quality menu.
  3. Check that 4K appears in the quality selector and is selected. Its presence confirms that the stream is being delivered as 4K; the label on a channel or event alone does not.
  4. If you want to test your setup before subscribing, use YouTube TV’s Preview a 4K video option: on a TV device, open the profile or account icon in the top-right corner, find 4K Plus under Add to membership, then select Preview a 4K video.
  5. For technical diagnosis, use Stats for Nerds in the player.

If 4K is missing or playback falls back to HD

First confirm that the program is eligible and the 4K Plus membership is active. Then check that your exact device supports 4K Plus, the player’s quality selector offers 4K, the HDMI path supports HDCP 2.2, and your connection can sustain YouTube TV’s recommended speed. Try the preview, connect the device directly to the TV, or test Ethernet or stronger Wi-Fi. Some content can be limited on Apple TV or PS4 Pro, and an event on a 4K-capable network may still be broadcast in HD. YouTube TV’s troubleshooting guidance covers the supported setup and playback checks.

How offline DVR downloads work

4K Plus allows downloads of eligible DVR recordings in the YouTube TV app on phones and tablets; it does not provide TV downloads or make every recording downloadable.

  1. Open the YouTube TV mobile app and choose Library.
  2. Find the recording and tap its download button.
  3. Play the downloaded recording on that phone or tablet without an internet connection.

If the download button is gray, that recording is not available for download. A downloaded video can be on only one device at a time; to play it on another device, delete the existing download first. Check the app’s current recording and account details for any other restrictions that apply to a particular program.

What “unlimited streams at home” means

With 4K Plus, YouTube TV removes the standard simultaneous-stream limit while viewing on the home Wi-Fi network. The ordinary plan allows three simultaneous streams, according to Tom’s Guide’s current specifications. “Unlimited” is specifically the home-stream benefit: it is not a promise of unlimited streams on travel or other networks, where YouTube TV’s location and household rules remain relevant. See YouTube TV’s home streaming guidance.

Is YouTube TV 4K Plus worth it?

Your situation How to think about 4K Plus
You regularly watch eligible sports or special events It may be worthwhile if the events you care about actually appear in the 4K guide and your devices support them.
Your household often has more than three simultaneous viewers at home Unlimited home streams may be more valuable than the selective 4K programming.
You travel and want recordings offline Eligible mobile DVR downloads can be useful, subject to program availability and the one-device-at-a-time limit.
You mainly watch ordinary HD channels or have one or two viewers The add-on is harder to justify if you rarely find a relevant 4K program and do not need its other features.
You only want a particular event in 4K Check whether the broadcaster or league offers that specific event in its own app or website, and compare access, authentication and quality before paying for an add-on.

4K Plus is a poor match if you expect all channels or all sports to be 4K, have only 1080p equipment, or cannot maintain a reliable connection. Its value is a combination of selective 4K, extra home streams and offline downloads—not a blanket picture-quality upgrade.

Alternatives to consider for a particular viewing need

  • Fubo: Investigate it if sports-focused coverage or regional sports availability is central to your decision. Confirm current channels, price and 4K terms directly at Fubo.
  • DIRECTV STREAM: Compare it if regional sports networks are a priority; check current package and 4K details at DIRECTV STREAM.
  • Sling TV: Consider its more modular approach if a lower-cost live-TV package is the priority, while checking whether its channel coverage fits your household at Sling TV.
  • Network or league apps: If you want one event rather than a full live-TV bundle, check the rights holder’s app or website for that event. Availability, authentication requirements and picture quality vary, so this is not a universal substitute for 4K Plus.

These services’ current prices and 4K terms should be checked with each provider; they are not established here as direct like-for-like equivalents.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
