YouTube Stream Key Works Locally but Fails from a Linux VPS: Troubleshooting

A stream key working on your computer does not prove the VPS can reach YouTube. Check the selected stream, RTMPS endpoint and TLS, outbound TCP 443, firewalls, and encoder output in order.

If a YouTube stream key works on your computer but fails from a Linux VPS, that does not by itself mean the key is bad. The VPS also needs the right live stream selected, the current RTMPS ingest URL, a working outbound connection to YouTube on TCP port 443, and valid encoder output. Check those layers in that order; the exact cause depends on the VPS provider, encoder, error message, and logs.

Start with the failure type

Separate a connection failure from a stream-quality problem before changing settings. An immediate connection or SSL error points first to the key, selected stream, URL, TLS setup, or network reachability. If the encoder connects but drops frames or disconnects, investigate network stability and bitrate instead.

What you see Check first What it may indicate
Immediate connection or SSL error Current key, selected stream, RTMPS URL, hostname, TCP 443, and encoder RTMPS support A key/configuration mismatch, endpoint reachability problem, or TLS setup issue. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and Google’s RTMPS documentation describe these requirements.
VPS cannot reach the current ingest host on TCP 443 Host firewall, provider firewall, DNS, and route A VPS-side egress policy or route may be blocking the connection. Test before changing firewall rules.
Encoder connects, then drops frames or disconnects Stable outbound speed, configured bitrate, and encoder connection logs The connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance treats dropped frames as a network issue.
Encoder output looks healthy, but YouTube reports an ingest or format error Encoder version, protocol, codec, keyframe settings, and YouTube dashboard message Compare the output with YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Check the key and selected YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm which live stream the VPS encoder is meant to send to.
  2. Copy the current stream key into the VPS encoder, taking care not to expose it in screenshots, public logs, or support posts. A key that worked locally may still be stale or different from the one configured on the VPS.
  3. If the encoder reports an error at startup, YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key and updating the third-party encoder.
  4. Retry once with the intended stream selected and the updated key. If it still fails, continue to the endpoint and network checks rather than repeatedly rotating keys.

Verify the RTMPS URL, hostname, and port

Use the ingest URL shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. Check that the encoder is configured for rtmps, not rtmp, and that its RTMPS implementation is enabled and supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

For SSL errors or timeouts, YouTube advises checking the URL and RTMPS support and specifying port 443 when needed. Google’s encoder-facing RTMPS ingestion documentation states that the connection must use port 443; it also requires the ingestion hostname for TLS authentication through Server Name Indication (SNI). If you use a custom RTMPS client rather than a standard encoder, verify that the TLS SNI value matches the hostname in the current ingest endpoint.

Test outbound access from the VPS

Run the reachability test from the VPS itself while using the exact current RTMPS hostname and port 443. A test against a different host, or one run from your laptop, does not establish that the VPS can reach YouTube’s ingest server. A successful TCP connection only proves basic reachability; it does not validate the stream key, TLS/SNI, or the full ingest session.

If the VPS cannot establish outbound TCP connectivity, inspect both firewall layers:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Operating-system firewall: Review the VPS’s host firewall rules for outbound restrictions. Ubuntu’s nftables documentation covers matching outbound traffic by destination port.
  • Provider firewall or security policy: Check the cloud provider’s firewall or security settings separately. A provider-level policy can restrict outbound traffic even when the operating-system firewall allows it. DigitalOcean’s firewall documentation is one example of outbound rules configured by port and destination.
  • DNS and route: Confirm the VPS resolves the current ingest hostname and can route traffic to it. If those checks fail, record the specific error before changing policy or contacting the provider.

Do not open inbound port 1935 merely because a guide for running your own RTMP ingest server mentions it. In this case, the VPS is making an outbound connection to YouTube; the cited YouTube RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies port 443.

If it connects but drops frames, check bitrate and stability

A working connection followed by dropped frames or intermittent disconnections is a different symptom from an immediate failure to connect. Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with stable outbound capacity from the VPS, not just a brief peak speed. YouTube advises checking the outbound internet connection in its live-stream troubleshooting guide; OBS explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server in its connection troubleshooting guide.

If the bitrate appears sustainable but the stream remains unstable, use the encoder’s connection logs and YouTube’s ingest dashboard to identify when the drops begin. Do not apply Windows-only OBS controls to Linux; use controls and logs that are actually available in your Linux encoder setup.

Validate encoder output and isolate the remaining layer

  1. Update the encoder to a current supported version and confirm it can output a local preview without errors.
  2. Check its log for the precise stage and error: key/authentication, connection, TLS, timeout, or stream output. Redact the stream key before sharing logs.
  3. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance for protocol, codec, keyframe, bitrate, resolution, and other output requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  4. Read the error shown in YouTube’s ingest dashboard alongside the encoder log; this can distinguish a transport failure from an encoder-format problem.
  5. If output is healthy and the cause remains unclear, run a controlled comparison: test from another network or with another encoder, changing one variable at a time. A successful test helps narrow the failing layer but does not, by itself, prove which setting caused it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the key is the whole connection: A valid key cannot compensate for the wrong ingest URL, protocol, TLS setup, or blocked outbound traffic.
  • Testing only from the local computer: The local machine and VPS can have different DNS, routes, and firewall policies.
  • Opening the wrong direction of traffic: This setup needs outbound access from the VPS to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, not an inbound RTMP listener on the VPS.
  • Treating a port test as a complete stream test: TCP reachability does not confirm authentication, SNI, encoder compatibility, or YouTube acceptance.
  • Changing multiple things at once: Update one setting, retry, and note the result so the failing layer remains identifiable.
