In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream, copy that stream’s key, and update the encoder. If a broadcast that was already running drops, check YouTube’s current error, the encoder’s local output and health, and outbound connectivity before assuming the key failed.
Fix the key or encoder configuration first
YouTube describes a stream key as like a password and address: “They tell your encoder where to send your feed and let YouTube accept it.” For a third-party encoder startup error, YouTube’s documented remedy is to get the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Stream.
- Confirm you are looking at the stream intended for this broadcast. If you manage several streams or reuse an encoder profile, check that it is not configured for another stream.
- Copy the key shown for the intended stream and replace the value in the encoder’s stream settings. Save the configuration, then try starting the encoder again.
YouTube notes that reusing stream settings can also reuse the previous stream key. A familiar encoder profile may therefore contain a valid-looking but wrong or outdated key.
When to reset the key
Reset it if you need to invalidate the existing key or cannot resolve which value is current. Use Reset beside the key in Live Control Room, then immediately copy the newly generated key into every encoder configuration that uses it. The old value will no longer be current wherever it has not been replaced. A channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Treat the key as a password: do not post it in screenshots, logs, or public support requests. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.

If you connect by signing in instead of entering a key
Some encoder integrations authenticate through your YouTube account rather than a manually entered key. If that connection fails, YouTube directs users to the encoder software vendor’s support team; the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. The manual key replacement steps do not apply to an integration that has no key field. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
Diagnose a stream that drops after it has started
A disconnect during a long broadcast is not necessarily a key problem. Use the latest message in YouTube’s Live Dashboard or Live Control Room to guide the next check. YouTube says errors are timestamped: red indicates a critical issue that may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while yellow indicates a moderate issue that may degrade quality. Read the current message rather than treating every error as an invalid-key warning. See Live streaming error messages.

Check encoder health and local output
- Update the encoder to its latest available version.
- Inspect the encoder’s own error messages and check CPU load for signs it cannot keep up.
- Check the local picture and sound. If they are wrong or missing locally, investigate the source, routing, or encoder load before changing the YouTube key.
- If you record locally, confirm that the archive file is being written and that its picture and sound are usable.
- If local checks do not reveal the cause, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.
Check upload capacity and the network path
Available upload bandwidth must cover the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom and counting both primary and backup stream bitrates when estimating the capacity needed. A connection disruption can break a stream; if a connection test identifies a problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider. Prepare recovery for a 24/7 broadcast
Do not assume that YouTube will preserve an entire continuous broadcast as one archive. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that stated condition does not establish what happens for every stream lasting longer than 12 hours. For a 24/7 channel, arrange an independent recording or recovery plan and verify that its files are growing and usable. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Test the recovery path before you need it
- Set up and test the stream in advance, and preview it before going live.
- Test encoder failover rather than assuming the player will roll over as intended.
- Include primary and backup feeds when checking whether the connection has enough upload capacity.
- During operation, monitor audio and video and verify that local archive files continue to grow.
- Confirm that the stream is accessible to viewers and that the recovery recording can actually be used.
YouTube recommends these preparation and monitoring practices; they reduce uncertainty but do not guarantee that a 24/7 feed will never disconnect. Its YouTube live streaming tips also discuss encoder choice and preparation.
