Changing an OBS scene collection is not documented as a cause that inherently ends a YouTube stream. OBS says scene collections save scenes and sources, not output settings; those belong to Profiles. If the stream drops at the same moment as a collection switch, use OBS’s status and logs to check whether the problem is the active stream configuration, network connection, or system load before blaming the switch.
Does changing an OBS scene collection stop a YouTube stream?
OBS describes Scene Collections as containers for scenes and sources, including Global Audio Sources. It explicitly says, “Scene Collections do not store output settings. Use Profiles.” OBS Scene Collections documentation therefore does not support the conclusion that switching collections by itself ends a stream.
Profiles hold most output-related settings, including Stream, Video, and Output, and OBS says Profiles and Scene Collections can be mixed and matched. OBS Profiles documentation Use the timing as a clue, not proof of cause: a switch might coincide with a network interruption, a configuration mismatch, or a performance problem.
Diagnose the interruption in OBS
1. Confirm the active Profile and stream configuration
- Identify the active OBS Profile, then check its service, server, and stream key or connected account in the Stream settings.
- Verify that the intended Profile is active and that its stream configuration is valid. Scene Collections can be paired with different Profiles, so confirm you have not switched to a Profile with different output settings.

2. Check what OBS reported at the moment the stream dropped
Look at OBS’s status indicators and logs around the incident. Determine whether OBS stopped sending, reported dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, or showed rendering or encoding overload. These signals help choose which troubleshooting branch to follow; the fact that a collection switch happened at the same time does not establish that it caused the outage.
3. Reproduce the switch in a safe test
Before a public broadcast, test the relevant collection changes and verify that the stream remains healthy. OBS recommends testing stream operation and scenes in advance. If possible, make one controlled change at a time so you can tell whether the failure follows a particular collection, configuration, or load condition.

If OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting Work through the connection path rather than treating a collection switch as the confirmed cause.
- Check bitrate against reliable upload capacity. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point, not a guaranteed fit for every service or connection. Use a stable upload measurement and leave headroom for variation.
- Try another ingest server where available. OBS recommends checking server selection; testing another service can also help distinguish a service-specific problem from a broader connection issue.
- Check the physical and local network path. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a possible source of instability and recommends wired networking for streaming. If the evidence points to Wi-Fi trouble, test with Ethernet; a cable is not a guaranteed fix for a collection-switch interruption.
- Check network software and equipment. Investigate VPNs, security software, network drivers, router behavior, cables, and other local connection problems.
If the issue appears during a complex collection switch
Large collections and complex scenes can consume more system resources. OBS notes that some sources can use resources even when they are not visible, and that resource-heavy sources can contribute to performance problems. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

- Reduce or remove costly sources in the affected collection, particularly resource-heavy browser sources.
- Keep collections focused and consider splitting a large collection when practical.
- Compare OBS rendering and encoding status before and after simplifying the collection.
These are performance measures, not a guaranteed remedy for a stream-session termination.
Review OBS automatic reconnect
OBS provides an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings. Review it in OBS under Settings > Advanced. Reconnect can help OBS recover after a connection interruption, but it does not prevent the underlying network or performance problem, and the available documentation does not guarantee that it will preserve a particular YouTube live session.
