If OBS reports skipped frames due to encoding lag, x264 may be struggling to encode quickly enough. Try a faster x264 CPU Usage Preset—starting with veryfast if your current preset is slower—then reassess. But first identify which kind of frames OBS says it is losing: rendering lag and network drops need different fixes, and changing the encoder preset will not solve either one.
First, identify where the frames are being lost
Run a representative stream long enough for the problem to occur. Open OBS Stats, note the relevant counters, and save the log for that session. The wording and placement of interface labels may vary between OBS releases, so use the counters and log to identify the stage rather than relying on a generic “dropped frames” message.
| OBS symptom | What it points to | First direction to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | The encoder is not keeping up with the work required to produce frames. | If using x264, test a faster CPU Usage Preset. |
| Missed frames due to rendering lag | OBS cannot render or composite the scene quickly enough. | Look at GPU load, game frame rate, and scene workload. |
| Dropped frames due to connection stalls | The connection between your setup and YouTube is stalling. | Investigate the network path and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. |
These counters describe different parts of the stream pipeline. A broad “dropped frames” report is not enough to conclude that x264, your CPU, or your internet connection is at fault. OBS support discussions distinguish encoding skips, rendering misses, and connection-related drops; they are troubleshooting examples, not a controlled comparison of hardware or settings.
Which x264 preset should you try?
Change the preset only when OBS points to encoding lag. In an OBS Project Forums support reply dated May 5, 2020, volunteer Narcogen recommends a faster preset for encoder overload and notes the tradeoff: faster presets reduce CPU load but can lower quality at a given bitrate. This is support guidance, not a guarantee that one preset will work for every computer.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open Settings and go to Output. If Output Mode is Advanced, select the Streaming tab and find CPU Usage Preset for x264. In Simple mode, inspect the available encoder settings there. Labels can differ by OBS release.
- If your current preset is slower than veryfast, test veryfast. OBS support material identifies it as a useful default reference, but that does not establish that every current installation starts there.
- If encoding lag continues while veryfast is selected, try a faster preset as a controlled test. Faster encoding can reduce CPU pressure, but at the same bitrate it may compress less efficiently and look worse.
- Stream the same kind of content again and compare the encoding-lag counter and log. Also check that picture quality remains acceptable at your chosen bitrate.
There is no universally best x264 preset established for all streamers. The right choice is conditional: try faster encoding when the log confirms encoder skips, then judge stability and visual quality together. A faster preset does not guarantee a clean stream.
If a faster preset is not enough
Make one change at a time, then repeat the same representative stream and compare a fresh OBS log. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped and to undo a setting that harmed image quality or motion.

Reduce output resolution
A lower output resolution reduces the work needed to encode each frame. In OBS, review the output resolution under Settings > Video, and the streaming output settings if you use Advanced Output mode. Lowering resolution trades detail for a lighter encoding workload.
Reduce frame rate if needed
Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work, though motion may look less smooth. OBS Project’s “Encoding Performance Troubleshooting,” published June 12, 2021, suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Those figures are an illustrative adjustment in the guide, not the result of a performance study or a promise that 30 fps will solve every overload.

For game streams, leave GPU capacity for OBS
An uncapped game can use GPU resources OBS needs to composite and render the scene. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, then check whether the rendering-lag counter improves. Compare the result against game responsiveness and frame pacing as well as OBS performance.
Simplify a resource-heavy scene selectively
Browser sources, filters, media sources, and other scene elements can add workload. OBS notes that sources may consume resources even when they are not visible. Disable only unneeded or potentially costly sources and filters, then compare a new log; removing elements indiscriminately can change the scene without addressing the actual bottleneck.

If the counter points to rendering or the network
Rendering lag is not an x264 preset problem
If OBS reports missed frames due to rendering lag, a faster x264 preset is not the direct fix. Investigate whether the game is consuming GPU capacity, whether the scene is unusually complex, and whether reducing output settings changes the rendering-lag counter.
Connection drops are not an x264 preset problem
If OBS reports dropped frames due to connection stalls, investigate the network path and compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. Do not expect a faster x264 preset to repair an unstable connection. The available OBS guidance here does not establish current numeric YouTube bitrate, keyframe, protocol, or ingest recommendations; consult current YouTube guidance for those values rather than treating a guessed number as authoritative.

A measured troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce the issue with representative content; record the OBS Stats counters and save the session log.
- Identify whether OBS reports encoding lag, rendering lag, or connection stalls.
- If x264 encoding lag is confirmed, test veryfast when the current preset is slower; if already at veryfast, test a faster preset.
- If encoding lag remains, lower output resolution or frame rate one step at a time and retest.
- If rendering lag is present in a game stream, cap in-game FPS or enable V-Sync; simplify costly scene elements only when the counters or log suggest resource pressure.
- If network drops are reported, investigate connection stability and sustainable bitrate rather than changing x264 presets.
- After each adjustment, compare the same counters and a fresh log, and check that the resulting picture and motion still meet your needs.
Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely direction | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag continues on a slower-than-veryfast preset | x264 may not be encoding quickly enough. | Test veryfast, then reassess the log and image quality. |
| Encoding lag remains on veryfast | The encoder may still be overloaded. | Try a faster preset; if needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate. |
| Rendering lag rises during gameplay | The game may be using GPU capacity OBS needs. | Cap the game FPS or enable V-Sync; reassess rendering lag. |
| Rendering or encoding lag occurs with a complex scene | Sources or filters may add workload. | Disable unneeded browser sources, media sources, or filters selectively and compare a new log. |
| Dropped frames are attributed to connection stalls | The network path may not sustain the stream consistently. | Check connection stability and compare configured bitrate with reliable upload capacity; a faster x264 preset is not a network fix. |
Do not buy hardware, change network equipment, or replace your encoder based only on the phrase “dropped frames.” First use the OBS counters and log to locate the failing stage; the right remedy depends on that diagnosis.
