If OBS is dropping frames while streaming to YouTube, lower the video bitrate until it fits your reliably available upload capacity. OBS’s starting rule of thumb is to set bitrate at about 75% of total upload speed, then test and adjust; it is not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific limit. The right setting depends on your connection and YouTube’s current limits.
First confirm that OBS is dropping frames
Check the dropped-frame counter in OBS while the stream is running. If it is increasing, OBS describes the issue as an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS says the Studio software itself is extremely unlikely to cause this kind of dropped frame. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Viewer buffering is a different symptom. If the OBS counter is not increasing but viewers report interruptions, use OBS’s separate viewer-buffering guidance rather than assuming your outgoing connection is dropping frames.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Use stable upload capacity, not a speed-test peak
OBS recommends starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as an initial estimate, not a fixed formula: speed-test results can vary, and a brief peak does not establish what your connection can sustain throughout a stream. If the dropped-frame counter rises, reduce the bitrate in small steps and test again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and locate Video Bitrate.
- Lower the current value. If you need a starting point, use roughly 75% of your total upload speed, then leave headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic.
- Stream long enough to see whether the dropped-frame counter remains stable under ordinary network use. If it still climbs, lower the bitrate further before trying more involved changes.
There is no single stable bitrate for every streamer, and the available OBS guidance does not provide a current resolution-by-resolution YouTube bitrate table. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send; do not treat OBS’s 75% rule as a platform limit.
If lowering bitrate does not stop the drops
Test the ingest route
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and try another available server. If the problem changes with the server, the selected route may be involved. OBS also suggests testing another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison; that test can help distinguish a service-specific problem from a broader connection problem.

Stabilize the local connection
- Use wired Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable can avoid wireless variability, but cannot by itself fix ISP instability, packet loss elsewhere, or a poor route to the ingest server.
- Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection.
- Look for network-optimization utilities that may deprioritize OBS traffic.
- Check for outdated network drivers and connectivity problems with your modem or router.
These checks follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps; change one factor at a time where possible so you can tell which change affects the counter.
Windows-only network options
OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing among the Windows settings worth testing. It also lists IPv4-only as a diagnostic option; if switching to IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. These are troubleshooting options, not universal improvements, and they do not replace fixing a bitrate or connection that cannot sustain the stream.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may help avoid some drops, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying problem and can reduce picture quality. The option described as beta in OBS’s guide and several of the network settings above are Windows-only; availability and labels can vary by OBS version and platform.
Keep broadcaster-side drops separate from viewer buffering
A stable OBS dropped-frame counter does not rule out buffering for viewers. Some viewers may have slower connections, so reducing resolution or bitrate can help make a stream easier to receive even when your own outgoing connection is stable. Diagnose the symptom first: broadcaster-side drops point toward the ingest connection or configured bitrate, while viewer reports without rising OBS drops call for a separate playback diagnosis.

YouTube keyframes and stream quality
OBS says YouTube transcodes all streams, including the source feed. It recommends a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation to support smooth transitions between quality options. This is separate from choosing a bitrate your connection can sustain: correct keyframes do not resolve an overloaded or unstable upload connection. For platform-specific encoder settings, consult YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance rather than relying on an old or universal bitrate chart.
For questions that remain unresolved, save and review a current OBS log and seek help with it. A network-dropped-frame symptom by itself is not evidence of a CPU or GPU encoder problem; OBS treats encoding-performance issues as a separate troubleshooting path.
