If your Raspberry Pi stream is dropping frames, first find out whether the loss happens during camera capture, encoding, or delivery to YouTube. Identify the Pi model and encoder path, compare local output with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, then change one setting at a time. A lower resolution and frame rate can be a useful controlled test, but neither a new Pi nor a cooling accessory is a fix unless measurements point to a hardware or thermal bottleneck.
1. Record the setup before changing settings
Write down the exact configuration: Pi model, camera or other input method, operating system, FFmpeg build, input pixel format and frame size, target resolution and frame rate, video codec, and whether the encoder is hardware-accelerated. A setting that works on one generation or input path may not apply to another.
Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual documents dedicated H.264 and MJPEG encoding hardware on Pi 4 and earlier devices. Raspberry Pi’s note on H.264 encoding performance on Raspberry Pi 5-series computers compares Pi 5 software encoding with Pi 4 hardware encoding. These differences make it important to confirm which encoder your software actually selected rather than assuming the Pi is using hardware acceleration.
2. Locate the stage where frames are lost
Watch the camera’s delivered frame rate and the encoder’s progress or output while the stream runs. At the same time, check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and any error messages. No single FFmpeg log field works for every camera, input method, and build, so interpret the evidence for your own path.

- Capture rate is below target: Investigate the camera mode, exposure or frame timing, and the load involved in acquiring the input.
- Capture is on target, but encoding falls behind: Check whether encoding is software-based, whether the selected encoder is available for your Pi and software, and whether the resolution or frame rate is too demanding for the actual path.
- Local capture and encoding appear steady, but YouTube reports ingest trouble: Check upload stability and whether the sent codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance.
YouTube lists ingest errors for incorrect video settings, excessive frame rate, and keyframe frequency in its live streaming error messages guidance. A dropped-frame warning by itself does not identify which stage is responsible.
3. Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video codecs; CBR bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. H.264 is a broadly familiar option for Raspberry Pi workflows, but confirm that your particular software and hardware support the encoder you choose.

There is no single best bitrate independent of format. Choose the table row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually being sent. As examples from YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026, H.264 at 720p60 has a recommended bitrate of 8 Mbps and a listed minimum of 3 Mbps; H.264 at 1080p30 has a recommended bitrate of 5 Mbps and a listed minimum of 5 Mbps. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular network can sustain the stream or that a stream at those values cannot drop frames.
Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds when configuring the encoder, and recalculate the interval in frames if you change frame rate. For example, the number of frames in a two-second interval changes with the frame rate; the exact FFmpeg option and value depend on the encoder. YouTube’s error guidance notes that frame rate and keyframe frequency are linked and advises keyframes every two seconds. Avoid copying an option or numeric value from another FFmpeg setup without checking that it applies to your encoder.

4. Test upload bandwidth and stability
Use a speed test to check upload capacity, as YouTube recommends, but judge the actual network at the intended streaming time rather than relying only on a peak result. Competing uploads and connection instability can interfere even when a speed test looks adequate. Choose a quality that the connection can reliably sustain.
For a controlled diagnostic, lower resolution and frame rate together, select the bitrate recommended for that resulting format, and observe whether capture, encoding, and YouTube stream health change. If they do, the comparison helps narrow the issue; it does not prove that every similar frame drop has the same cause.

5. Check for hardware or thermal limits using measurements
During the problem, record temperature, throttling indicators, CPU or encoder load, and sustained output behavior. If a software encode falls behind, reducing the workload or testing a hardware-encoded path supported by that Pi may be relevant. If measurements show thermal throttling, cooling may also be relevant. Neither a Pi upgrade nor a cooling accessory should be treated as the default fix without evidence that the current hardware or temperature is limiting performance.
6. Run a preflight and monitor the live stream
- Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guidance and confirm the intended stream is selected.
- Send a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends this kind of test before starting a live stream.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm the preview appears and review YouTube’s messages while the stream is running. If YouTube reports an ingest error, use that message alongside local capture and encoder observations to identify the failing stage.
- Change one variable at a time. Record the before-and-after capture rate, encoder behavior, settings, and stream-health result so the effect of each change is clear.
7. Common symptoms and what to check
