For a single file you want to repeat continuously, try FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option before that file’s -i. If FFmpeg keeps sending packets, investigate YouTube’s stream health, encoder settings, and output connection instead; looping cannot fix those problems.
First, determine what stops at the file boundary
A buffering spinner in the YouTube player does not, by itself, identify the cause. A source reaching end-of-file, a pause while another file loads, an output or network failure, and an ingest configuration issue can look similar to a viewer. Check the FFmpeg process and its output around the moment the file ends before changing recovery settings.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still running. If it exits or stops producing frames and packets when the file ends, start with input sequencing or looping.
- Check whether output packets continue. If FFmpeg stays alive but stops writing packets, inspect the input transition and logs. If packets continue, the issue may be downstream of the file input.
- Read YouTube’s stream status and health messages. Use its reported configuration issues to check for an ingest or encoder problem rather than inferring one from the player alone. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes stream active/inactive state, health status, and configuration issues.
These checks separate input continuity (whether FFmpeg has usable media to send) from output continuity (whether it is writing to YouTube). They also help distinguish either from YouTube’s reported ingest health.
Loop one file indefinitely with FFmpeg
For a single file that should repeat, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. The option belongs before the -i for the input it applies to:

Replace the output URL with the ingestion details from your channel’s Live Control Room. Keep your stream key private; do not paste it into a public post, issue, or log you share. Choose encoding settings for the media and upload capacity you actually have.
After making the change, verify the boundary: FFmpeg should remain running and continue producing output packets as playback returns to the beginning. If it still pauses or YouTube reports a health issue, continue with the checks below rather than assuming the loop fixed every cause.

If you are playing several files in sequence
A single-input infinite loop is not a general playlist solution. If buffering occurs between different files, inspect how the sequence is assembled and identify whether FFmpeg reaches EOF, pauses while the next input becomes available, or continues writing packets. Check for timestamp discontinuities and differences in stream parameters between files. The right fix depends on how the playlist or concat input is constructed; the symptom alone does not establish which transition method you use.
Check YouTube encoder settings and connection capacity
If FFmpeg continues writing but YouTube’s health information points to an ingest or configuration problem, compare your output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supported ingest codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the table for your actual stream profile rather than applying one generic bitrate.

- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds, in line with YouTube’s recommendation.
- Bitrate: Choose it for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you are sending. Make sure the upload connection can sustain that bitrate.
- Codec and rate control: Use a supported ingest codec and CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Test and monitor: Test with representative audio and motion before relying on the stream, then watch YouTube’s health messages during the broadcast.
Encoder conformance will not make an input file repeat. Diagnose the file boundary first if FFmpeg stops emitting packets there.
Use FIFO recovery only for an output failure
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery after an output failure. Its queue behavior involves a trade-off: if the queue fills, it can block the encoder; configuring it to drop packets avoids blocking but omits packets from the stream. Use FIFO recovery only when logs support an output or network failure diagnosis. It does not loop an input that has ended, and packet dropping is not a fix for source EOF.

What to collect if the gap persists
A short, redacted diagnostic record makes the next troubleshooting step more concrete. Capture:
- The exact FFmpeg command, with the stream key removed.
- The FFmpeg version and build information.
- Log lines and timestamps around the file boundary, including whether output packets continue.
- Whether the source is one file or a multi-file playlist, and how the sequence is assembled.
- YouTube’s stream health and configuration messages at the same time.
With these details, you can tell whether to change input sequencing, investigate output recovery, or correct an encoder or ingest setting.
