Short answer: YouTube’s sleep timer is real, but “only with Premium subscribers” describes its August 2024 test, not the best current description. YouTube later announced the feature for all users on mobile devices, and its current Help documentation presents Sleep Timer as a normal player control. Availability can still vary by app version, account, country, device and playback surface.
What YouTube originally tested
In August 2024, YouTube tested Sleep Timer with Premium subscribers. The control let viewers choose a period after which the current video would pause—useful for podcasts, music, ambient noise, relaxation videos and long-form documentaries watched at bedtime. Reports about the test listed 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 and 60 minutes, plus an option to stop when the video ended. Those were test-period choices, not a guarantee of the menu you will see today. TechCrunch reported the original experiment.
Sleep Timer is not a device shutdown command. The documented result is that YouTube pauses playback and sends a silent notification. It does not necessarily power off your phone, computer or television, close YouTube, stop other apps, or prevent every form of later playback. If you are still awake, the player can offer a way to reset the timer.
Is Sleep Timer still a Premium-only feature?
Not according to YouTube’s current product framing. The feature began as a Premium experiment, but YouTube subsequently announced that Sleep Timer was being made available to all users on mobile devices. The current YouTube Help page documents Sleep Timer without saying that Premium is required.

That does not mean every account and device has the control at the same time. A feature can be broadly launched while its interface remains dependent on client, account, region or rollout status. An old article that says “Premium only” is probably describing the 2024 test rather than the later rollout.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Premium test | YouTube trials a feature with paying members before wider release. |
| Premium-exclusive feature | YouTube intentionally keeps a feature behind the subscription. |
| Broader rollout | The feature may become available to non-paying users, often by client or region. |
| Client-specific availability | The feature exists, but a particular app, account or playback surface may not expose it yet. |
How to set YouTube Sleep Timer
The verified current path is a player control, not a general account setting:
- Open the YouTube video you want to play.
- Open the player’s Settings menu.
- Select Sleep Timer.
- Choose the available duration.
- Let playback continue; YouTube automatically pauses the video when the timer expires.
The exact duration list may differ between clients. YouTube’s current Help page says to select how long the timer should run but does not publish one universal set of durations. If the control offers a reset or adjustment option while the timer is active, use that to continue watching.

These instructions apply to a supported YouTube player. The available documentation does not establish identical controls for YouTube Music, smart-TV apps, game consoles, casting, embedded players, downloaded videos, livestreams, Shorts or every autoplay and playlist configuration. Do not assume that a control visible in the mobile app will appear in all of those contexts.

- The current YouTube video pauses automatically.
- YouTube issues a silent notification.
- If you are still awake, you can reset the timer where that client provides the option.
The safe expectation is “pause playback.” It is not “turn off YouTube” or “shut down the device.” If audio appears to continue elsewhere, check for casting, another active device, autoplay or a separate queue before treating that as a Sleep Timer failure.
Sleep Timer versus Bedtime Reminder
| Feature | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep Timer | Pauses the current playback after a selected period. | Falling asleep without leaving a video running. |
| Bedtime reminder | Reminds you that it is time to go to bed. | Receiving a prompt without automatically stopping playback. |
YouTube’s Help documentation distinguishes the two. A bedtime reminder is therefore not a substitute if your goal is to stop the current video.

Why Sleep Timer may be missing
If Sleep Timer does not appear, that is not proof that Premium is required. Work through these practical checks:
- Update the YouTube app from your device’s app store.
- Sign in to the account you normally use for YouTube.
- Open a regular on-demand video rather than an embedded player, livestream, TV interface or another special playback surface.
- Open the video player’s Settings menu; the option may not appear in YouTube’s general account settings.
- Try another supported device or the desktop site to determine whether the difference is client-specific.
- Close and restart the app after updating.
- If the option is still absent, treat the result as an availability or rollout limitation and check again after a later app update.
YouTube’s official page confirms the basic control path and pause behavior; the checks above are troubleshooting recommendations rather than a promise that every client supports the feature.

Does it work with every type of YouTube playback?
Not established. The official documentation describes Sleep Timer for YouTube videos, but it does not guarantee support for every playback context. In particular, the available material does not verify uniform behavior for:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is YouTube Premium worth paying for Sleep Timer?
Sleep Timer alone is a weak reason to subscribe because YouTube announced broader mobile availability after the Premium test. Premium may still be worthwhile if you also want ad-free viewing, background playback, offline downloads and YouTube Music. YouTube describes those benefits in its Premium information.
Do not rely on an old price in a review: subscription cost varies by country, plan, billing platform, taxes, promotions and date. Check the amount shown for your account at the official YouTube Premium signup page. Premium remains a channel for experiments—YouTube’s 2025 announcement explains how members can receive experimental features through youtube.com/new—but an experiment’s Premium access does not automatically make the final feature exclusive.
Best Value
- 4k Ultra HD (2160p resolution): Enjoy breathtaking HDR10 4K movies and TV shows at 4 times the resolution of Full HD, and upscale your current content to Ultra HD-level picture quality.
- High Dynamic Range: Provides a wide range of color details and sharper contrast, from the brightest whites to the deepest blacks.
- All-in-one: Get right to your good stuff. With Fire TV, you can enjoy a world of entertainment from apps like Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max. Plus, stream for free with Fire TV Channels, Pluto TV, Tubi, and more. Access over 1.8 million movies and TV episodes. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.
- Smart Home: Your smart home hub. Pair Fire TV with compatible smart home devices to see live camera feeds, use AirPlay, control your lighting and thermostat, and more.
- Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.
YouTube Premium Lite is also market-dependent. YouTube announced background play and downloads for Premium Lite in markets where that plan is available, but that announcement does not establish that Sleep Timer is included. Check the plan’s current terms in your country.
Alternatives if YouTube’s control is unavailable
- Device sleep settings: Operating-system or hardware sleep functions may stop audio more broadly, but the steps depend on your iOS, Android, computer, TV or manufacturer version.
- Desktop utilities: Browser extensions, media-control tools and operating-system timers can provide stronger automation, at the cost of permissions, compatibility and maintenance concerns.
- Bedtime Reminder: Use YouTube’s first-party reminder if you want a prompt rather than automatic pausing.
These alternatives are not identical to Sleep Timer. A system-level timer may affect other audio or put the entire device to sleep, while YouTube’s documented control pauses YouTube playback.
A short timeline
- August 9, 2024: Reports described a Premium test with preset durations and an “until the video ends” choice. TechCrunch.
- Later in 2024: YouTube announced Sleep Timer for all users on mobile devices. YouTube Blog.
- August 2026 documentation: YouTube Help lists Sleep Timer as a player setting that pauses playback after a selected duration. YouTube Help.
The Bottom Line
YouTube Sleep Timer is a genuine feature, but the claim that it is available only to Premium subscribers is outdated. It started as a Premium test, later moved toward broader mobile availability, and now appears through the player’s Settings → Sleep Timer control on supported clients. If you do not see it, update the app and try another playback surface before assuming a subscription is required.
