It took effect on October 15, 2024, and applies to square or vertical uploads. TikTok’s official documentation says all creators can post three-minute videos, while some have access to five- or ten-minute uploads. That gives TikTok more duration flexibility for some accounts, not a universal advantage: the right platform depends on the story, audience, rights and results you want.
What qualifies as a three-minute YouTube Short?
YouTube announced the expansion on October 3, 2024, and began accepting eligible three-minute Shorts on October 15. For standard channels, an upload must be three minutes or shorter and square or vertical—often described as “square or taller.” A landscape 16:9 video generally remains a regular YouTube video, even if it runs for less than three minutes. Uploads made before the effective date retain their existing long-form classification. YouTube’s announcement and current Shorts eligibility guidance describe the rule.
The maximum Shorts resolution is 1080p. You can upload through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio; the mobile creation tools also support Shorts up to three minutes. A file slightly longer than 3:00 may be trimmed or rejected, so leave a little margin when exporting.
Upload from the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create.
- Choose Upload a video, then select a square or vertical file.
- Trim the video if needed, then tap Next to add available text, filters or audio.
- Add the details and publish, or save a draft.

Upload from YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create, then Upload videos.
- Select a square or vertical file up to three minutes long, complete its details and publish.
Studio supports batch uploads of up to 15 short videos at a time, subject to the Shorts requirements for each file. See YouTube’s desktop upload instructions.
How long can a TikTok video be?
TikTok does not have one maximum that applies to every creator and publishing route. Its current developer documentation says all creators can post videos up to three minutes, while some creators have access to five- or ten-minute videos. The Content Posting API can send videos up to ten minutes, but that technical endpoint limit is not proof that every account can publish a ten-minute video in the consumer app. Availability may vary by account, region, app feature and upload method. Check the limit shown in the specific account and workflow you intend to use. TikTok’s upload documentation sets out the current distinctions.

Where each platform may have an advantage
The practical comparison is not simply “three minutes versus ten.” YouTube puts Shorts alongside long-form video, search, subscriptions, live streams and other channel features. Shorts can surface in the Shorts Feed, search, the homepage, channel pages, subscriptions and notifications. That can suit creators who want a short clip to lead viewers to a larger video library. TikTok may suit work built around its native sounds, effects, stitches, duets and trend participation, particularly when the creator has access to longer uploads. These are strategic differences, not evidence that one platform universally delivers more reach.

A platform’s nominal upload ceiling says little by itself about discovery, retention, conversion or revenue. TikTok may have the edge for a trend-led format or an account that can publish longer clips; YouTube may be the better fit when a Short supports a search-oriented channel or points into longer work.
Music and copyright can matter more than the extra time
YouTube’s most important three-minute edge case is Content ID. A Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim of any type can be blocked globally. While blocked, it cannot be played or recommended and is not eligible for monetization until the claim is resolved. This makes a popular song or an uncleared clip a potential distribution problem, not just a revenue issue. YouTube explains the rules in its Shorts eligibility and copyright guidance.

For a three-minute Short, most songs in the Shorts Audio Library can be used for up to 90 seconds; some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. You can instead use original music, a separately licensed track, a shorter permitted excerpt or royalty-free music from YouTube’s Audio Library. A sound available inside TikTok is not automatically licensed for use in a YouTube upload, and the reverse should not be assumed either.

A three-minute Short uses the Shorts monetization system, not the conventional Watch Page advertising model for a regular YouTube video. Eligible YouTube Partner Program creators who accept the Shorts Monetization Module share in revenue allocated through the Shorts Creator Pool; creators keep 45% of their allocated Shorts revenue. Shorts Feed ads are pooled separately from long-form Watch Page ads, and the allocation accounts for eligible engaged views and music usage. See YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies.

YouTube lists a Shorts route to full YPP eligibility of 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the separate 4,000-watch-hour route. Eligibility requirements and program terms are set out in YouTube’s Shorts guidance and its Partner Program overview.
Raw view counts also need care. Since March 31, 2025, a YouTube Shorts view counts when the Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retains “Engaged views” to indicate viewers who chose to continue watching, and says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing continue to use engaged views. Do not treat a raw YouTube view as directly equivalent to a view counted under another platform’s rules.
Choose a platform by the job the video needs to do
Start with YouTube when the clip supports a wider channel
- You already publish longer videos and want Shorts to introduce that library.
- Search visibility or evergreen discovery matters to the subject.
- The story works within three minutes and does not rely on a sound you cannot use on YouTube.
- You want to build within YouTube’s channel and YPP ecosystem.
Start with TikTok when the format depends on its native culture
- The clip is built around TikTok sounds, effects, stitches, duets or a time-sensitive trend.
- Your account has access to longer uploads and the story genuinely needs the extra time.
- The format is designed for TikTok’s audience behavior rather than adapted from another platform.
Cross-post when the rights and workflow support it
Use an original, clean master file without a platform watermark. Make platform-native versions with their own captions, music, stickers and calls to action, then upload each version directly. Cross-posting is most useful when audience diversification is a goal and you can evaluate each platform on its own terms.
Test length instead of assuming longer wins
Use the three-minute ceiling as room to tell a fuller story, not a target. Tutorials, recipes, demonstrations, explanations, interviews, mini-documentaries and sketches with a setup and payoff may need more than a minute. A tightly edited 25-second version may still communicate the idea more effectively than a padded three-minute cut.

- Keep the hook, subject and basic presentation as consistent as practical, while tailoring music, captions and calls to action to each platform.
- Post native versions and compare retention, completion, engaged views, rewatches, comments, shares, follows and downstream clicks.
- Use each platform’s own analytics and definitions. Do not choose a winner by raw view count alone.
For the longer version, put the hook or visual premise in the first two seconds, make the payoff clear within the first 15, then use the remaining time for steps, evidence or escalation. Cut repeated context and slow introductions. The format should earn its length.

When a Short is classified, trimmed or blocked unexpectedly
- It appears as a regular video: Check whether it was uploaded before October 15, 2024, exceeds three minutes or is not square or vertical. YouTube says a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 is the way to avoid Shorts classification for a short regular video.
- The app trims it: Confirm the source file’s actual duration and use the regular upload flow or Studio if needed. Export slightly below three minutes rather than targeting exactly 180 seconds.
- A longer Short is blocked: Check for an active Content ID claim, unlicensed music or third-party footage, then review any relevant policy notices. An active claim on a Short over one minute can trigger global blocking.
- You want regular-video treatment: Export in a wider format such as 16:9 instead of square or vertical.
