Netflix lets you download many movies and episodes for offline playback in its app on Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Amazon Fire tablets, and compatible Chromebooks with the Google Play Store. Downloads are not available on every Netflix device, and not every title can be saved. They stay inside the Netflix app on the device used to download them; they are not permanent, transferable video files.
What you need before downloading
- An active Netflix membership and the Netflix app on a supported device.
- Enough free storage for the titles you want. File sizes vary by title, length, quality, device, and app behavior; Netflix does not give one universal size per movie.
- A current app and, where needed, a supported operating system. Netflix recommends updating both before troubleshooting.
- Wi-Fi is recommended to avoid using mobile data. Sign in before you go offline, and remain signed in to watch downloads.
Netflix’s current guidance lists iOS and iPadOS 12 or later for downloads, but says the latest Netflix app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Downloads on ad-supported plans require iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. These are Netflix’s stated requirements and can vary with app versions; check its iPhone and iPad requirements. For Android, device compatibility varies; Fire tablets need Fire OS 7 or later for downloads, and a Chromebook must have the Google Play Store installed. How to download a Netflix movie
- Open the Netflix app on a supported device and sign in.
- Choose the profile you plan to use and open the movie’s page.
- Tap or select the Download icon.
- Wait until the download finishes, then open Downloads in the app to find it.
If there is no download icon, that movie may not be licensed for download in your region or may not be available on that device or account. Try another title rather than assuming the app is broken.
How to download TV episodes
- Open the show’s page in the Netflix app.
- Select the download icon beside an episode you want.
- If the show offers it, select Download Season to save the season’s episodes.
- Open Downloads to check progress and find completed episodes.

Which devices support Netflix downloads?

Netflix distinguishes devices that can stream from those that support downloads. Its supported-device information and download troubleshooting page explain the current limits.
How to watch downloads offline
- While online, open a downloaded movie or episode once to confirm playback works.
- When offline, open the Netflix app and select Downloads.
- Choose the title and select Play.
Downloads remain on the device that saved them, but Netflix says they can be viewed from any profile on that device, subject to profile and maturity restrictions. Before a flight or trip, test playback in airplane mode and check that the expected audio and subtitles are available.
How to find titles that can be downloaded
Look for the download icon on a movie or beside an episode. Alternatively, open Downloads and choose See What You Can Download on iPhone, iPad, Android, or Fire devices. On Chromebook, the route is Downloads > Find More to Download. Labels may vary with app version. If a title has no download icon, its offline rights may not be available for your device, account, or region.
Choose download quality and manage storage
Netflix offers two quality options. Standard uses less storage and downloads faster, with SD playback. High or Higher uses more storage and takes longer; playback can reach up to 1080p when the title and device support it. High quality does not guarantee 1080p for every download.

- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name, then App Settings.
- Tap Download Video Quality or Video Quality.
- Choose Standard or High/Higher.
Netflix’s download quality guidance covers the setting. Delete watched titles from Downloads when you need to reclaim space.
Can Netflix downloads go on an SD card?
On supported Android and Amazon Fire devices, you may be able to use an SD card as the destination for future downloads. iPhones and iPads do not support this Netflix storage option.
- Insert and mount a compatible SD card.
- In Netflix, tap My Netflix, then the profile name.
- Open App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Download Location and select the card.
Changing the location affects future downloads; existing ones remain where they were saved. Support depends on the device and card. If downloads fail, reinsert or restart the device, try another compatible card, or switch to internal storage. See Netflix’s SD-card setup, SD-card error guidance, and card compatibility help.

Downloads for You
Downloads for You automatically saves recommended movies and shows over Wi-Fi on Android phones and tablets and iPhones and iPads. It is optional, requires the latest Netflix app, and is unavailable on ad-supported plans. You can adjust how much storage a profile allocates to it.

To manage it, go to My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Smart Downloads > Downloads for You. See Netflix’s Downloads for You guidance.
Automatic episode replacement
Other Smart Downloads functions can remove watched episodes and download the next episode where supported. This is different from Downloads for You, which selects recommendations. The available controls depend on the feature, device, and plan.
Why some Netflix titles cannot be downloaded
Download rights are separate from streaming rights. A provider may not offer download rights, another company may hold exclusive rights, or licensing may vary by region, season, popularity, or cost. Some studio arrangements allow a title to stream without allowing an offline copy. That is why a Netflix Original is not automatically downloadable. Netflix explains these factors in its title availability guidance.
When downloads expire
There is no single expiry period for every Netflix download. A title may expire after a title-specific period, and some titles have limits on how often they can be downloaded or renewed. If one is marked Expired, open Downloads, select and delete that copy, return to the title page, and try downloading it again. If the title has left Netflix or reached a studio-imposed renewal limit, it may not be available again. Download limits and what cancellation changes
Limits depend on the plan and device. Netflix’s current guidance says ad-supported plans allow 15 total downloads per device per calendar month; the counter resets on the first day of each month. Ad-free plans can allow up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the plan’s device allowance. Netflix also notes that some account messages show a 15-per-month limit across two total devices, so follow the limit displayed for your account rather than treating one number as universal. Some titles have a separate annual re-download limit. An error such as “This title can only be downloaded 1 more time” can mean you cannot download that title again for up to a year; streaming online may still be possible. Details are in Netflix’s title-specific download limit help.
Canceling a Netflix membership deletes downloads from the device. If you restart membership, you need to download titles again. A download is temporary access tied to the Netflix account, app, device, title rights, and applicable plan—not ownership of a permanent copy.
Troubleshoot common download problems
No Download icon
- Try another title; the first may not have download rights in your region.
- Confirm the device is a supported download device, not merely one that can stream.
- Update the Netflix app and device operating system, then check plan and account restrictions.

Download is stuck or fails
- Check Wi-Fi, available storage, app updates, sign-in status, and device compatibility.
- If you selected an SD card, verify it is mounted and supported; try internal storage if needed.
- Clearing Netflix app data on Android or reinstalling the app can remove all downloads and sign you out, so leave these steps until simpler checks fail.
“Download Max Reached”
Check the limit for your plan and account. For the ad-supported monthly device limit, wait for the first day of the next calendar month before downloading more.
“This title can only be downloaded 1 more time”
This points to a title-specific re-download limit, not a storage error. Consult Netflix’s download-limit guidance; watching online may be the immediate alternative.
Downloads do not work while traveling
Download before crossing a border. Netflix says existing downloads on a phone or tablet may not be available in a different country, and catalog or access conditions can vary. Keep the app signed in, test playback beforehand, and bring alternate titles. Netflix’s international travel guidance explains the limitation.
Can you transfer downloads or keep them permanently?
No. Netflix downloads are managed by the app and stay on the device used to download them. They are not ordinary video files for copying to another phone, playing in a different media player, or keeping after access ends. Avoid third-party downloaders, screen recorders, and DRM-removal tools: they are not Netflix’s supported offline method and may introduce security, copyright, account, or terms-of-service problems.
