YouTube RTMPS vs. RTMP for a 24/7 Prerecorded Stream

RTMPS encrypts your encoder-to-YouTube connection, but it does not guarantee a 24/7 stream. Learn setup, settings, troubleshooting, and cloud options.

Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. It encrypts the connection from your encoder to YouTube, and YouTube recommends it for live streaming. RTMPS does not, by itself, make a stream more reliable or keep it running around the clock: that depends on the encoder, hosting arrangement, network, and operating checks.

RTMPS vs. RTMP: what changes?

Factor RTMPS RTMP
Connection RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection between encoder and YouTube. RTMP without that TLS/SSL protection.
YouTube’s recommendation YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. YouTube offers an ordinary RTMP URL, but does not recommend it over RTMPS.
Encoder requirements Your encoder must support RTMPS and use the secure server URL. May be an option for encoders without RTMPS support.
24/7 operation Does not guarantee uptime or continuous-duty operation. Has the same limitation; protocol choice alone does not determine reliability.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection that provides encryption. Its encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS. Choose it when available; if your encoder does not support it, compatibility may constrain your choice, but the two protocols do not provide the same connection security. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

How to set up an encoder with YouTube RTMPS

  1. Check the encoder. Look for a YouTube RTMPS preset. If it is missing, check for an encoder update and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
  2. Get the secure URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the Stream tab or schedule a stream. In Stream settings, use the lock icon to view the stream URL and key. Copy them into your encoder.
  3. Confirm the protocol. The ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default. Check that the selected server URL begins with rtmps://, and that the full URL and server are correct.
  4. Configure and test the stream. Set the encoder for the chosen video and audio format, start it, and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.

Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your YouTube stream. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder using the new key.

Encoder settings and network checks

Video, audio, bitrate, and keyframes

YouTube’s settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use YouTube’s table for your actual output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. These figures apply to that specific format.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Upload capacity and continuous operation

YouTube recommends upload bandwidth above the combined bitrate of your stream and 20% headroom. A stable connection matters for any long-running broadcast, but available bandwidth alone does not ensure an uninterrupted stream. Test representative motion and audio, check the Live Control Room preview, start the encoder ahead of the intended broadcast, and monitor sound and picture quality. Where an encoder writes a local archive, YouTube also advises checking that the file continues to grow; test backup-encoder failover if your setup supports it. These are operating checks, not guarantees of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.

What RTMPS does—and does not—solve for a 24/7 prerecorded stream

RTMPS protects the encoder-to-YouTube connection with encryption. It does not make an encoder suitable for continuous operation, supply a backup internet connection, or automatically reconnect after an interruption. For a 24/7 prerecorded stream, assess the whole workflow: where the video loops, whether the encoder or service can run continuously, what happens after a dropped connection, and how you will monitor the broadcast.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos. That listing identifies a service for this use case; it does not establish performance claims about the service. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not settle the archive outcome for a single uninterrupted 24/7 stream, so do not rely on an archive for a stream at or beyond 12 hours without checking YouTube’s current guidance.

Run the stream from a computer or let it run in the cloud?

Computer or hardware encoder

A local encoder gives you direct control of playback and output settings, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for the broadcast. YouTube recognizes standalone hardware encoders as a category; the guidance cited here does not establish a specific model or continuous-duty rating. Before choosing hardware, verify RTMPS support and the manufacturer’s specifications for continuous operation.

Troubleshoot RTMPS connection problems

  • Encoder reports an SSL error: verify that the complete server URL is the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, not the ordinary RTMP address. Confirm the protocol and server are correct. If the error continues and the encoder allows a port setting, YouTube’s example uses port 443 with the actual server URL.
  • Connection times out: confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and check its documentation if the timeout persists. Also verify the server URL, stream key, and available upload capacity.
  • YouTube receives no video: confirm the encoder is running, the correct stream key is in use, and the Live Control Room preview receives the intended feed.
  • Video stutters or drops: compare available upload bandwidth with the stream’s combined bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the encoder’s bitrate and keyframe settings against YouTube’s guidance for the selected format.
  • The stream disconnects during a long run: RTMPS does not provide continuous-duty operation or recovery by itself. Check the encoder or hosting service’s recovery behavior and monitor the broadcast.

For protocol-specific errors, consult YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions; for format and network settings, use YouTube’s encoder settings.
