Use the stream-specific server URL shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room—not an old example URL or a guessed IP address. If your encoder supports RTMPS, choose the RTMPS URL. Enter the stream key separately in the encoder’s key or stream-name field. YouTube’s published guidance reviewed here does not confirm that its current ingest hosts are universally reachable over IPv6, so IPv6-only setups need to test the supplied hostname on their actual network.
What is the YouTube RTMP ingest URL?
The ingest URL is the server address your encoder sends video to. YouTube supplies it for the stream you select or schedule in Live Control Room. It is distinct from the stream key, which identifies and authorizes that stream. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains where to find the stream URL and key.
Do not copy an address from an old tutorial and assume it is the current endpoint for a new stream. In an API-integrated workflow, the corresponding stream-specific values are available through the LiveStreams resource; the API distinguishes primary and backup addresses. See Google’s LiveStreams documentation.
How to find and enter the URL
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room and select an existing stream or schedule one. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder describes this encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL from stream settings. If RTMPS is available, reveal and copy that URL; the standard URL may be shown by default. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol” in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Configure the encoder. Choose a YouTube RTMPS preset if available. Otherwise paste the copied address into the server or URL field, then enter the stream key in its separate field. Follow the encoder’s field format: some tools accept a server URL and stream name separately, while others combine them as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Keep backup ingestion separate. Use a backup address only in the encoder’s backup-server field and only when configuring the intended backup path. The YouTube API exposes distinct primary and backup values for RTMP and RTMPS.
- Test before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and check the preview and stream health with representative audio and motion. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Should you use RTMP or RTMPS?
Use RTMPS when YouTube offers it and your encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP through TLS, encrypting the connection. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and recommends encrypted transmission; its RTMPS setup guidance explains how to reveal the URL.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an RTMPS connection error, check that the URL uses the YouTube-provided rtmps hostname and that the connection uses port 443. Google’s Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS specifies port 443 and hostname-based SNI for server authentication. Do not replace the hostname with a guessed numeric address: TLS expects the correct hostname/SNI.
Does YouTube RTMP work over IPv6?
The official YouTube documentation cited here explains how to obtain the stream-specific URL, use RTMPS, and configure the encoder, but it does not establish that current RTMP or RTMPS ingest hosts are universally supported over IPv6. That is not proof that IPv6 is unsupported; it means compatibility is not guaranteed by these published sources.

For an IPv6-only connection, test the exact hostname copied from Live Control Room using the encoder and network that will carry the stream. DNS resolution alone does not establish end-to-end reachability: routing, encoder socket support, firewall rules, and the destination’s available addresses can all matter. If the test fails, ask YouTube or the encoder/network vendor for a definitive compatibility statement. Do not invent an IPv6-specific URL or substitute a guessed IPv4 or IPv6 literal.
RTMP versus RTMPS is the application protocol and security choice; IPv4 versus IPv6 is the network-layer choice. The URL format in the reviewed YouTube guidance does not provide an IP-family-specific alternative.

Keep the stream key private
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the associated broadcast. Enter it only in the encoder’s intended key field, avoid sharing screenshots or configuration exports that expose it, and reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been compromised. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers stream keys and URLs.
Encoder settings and a reliable test
The ingest URL does not set video quality. Configure resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codecs, and audio settings in the encoder according to YouTube’s current recommendations and the encoder’s capabilities. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than assuming an RTMP URL implies a particular bitrate or format.

- Use the exact URL and key for the selected stream, not credentials copied from a different broadcast.
- Test with the same network route and encoder planned for the live event, especially when IPv6-only reachability is a requirement.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health indications before starting the public event; verify both picture and audio.
Common connection problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect | Copy the current URL again from the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings. Check that URL and key have not been swapped or taken from different streams. |
| RTMPS handshake or connection error | Confirm the URL uses the YouTube-provided RTMPS hostname and the encoder connects on port 443. Preserve the hostname so TLS SNI can authenticate the server. |
| Key rejected or wrong broadcast receives signal | Verify that the key belongs to the selected stream, then reset it if it may have been exposed. Keep the stream key separate from the server URL unless the encoder explicitly requires a combined URL/stream-name format. |
| Works on one network but not IPv6-only access | Test the exact hostname from the IPv6-only network using the actual encoder. Check DNS, routing, firewall policy, and encoder IPv6 support; ask YouTube or the relevant vendor because universal YouTube IPv6 ingest support is not established by the cited guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded YouTube stream that needs to loop continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service continues streaming with your computer off, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and handles uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera encoder. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
