A YouTube RTMP connection error from an Ubuntu VPS is not, by itself, proof that DNS or a firewall is at fault. Start by copying the current RTMPS server URL from YouTube Live Control Room, then match your checks to the error: an SSL error points first to the RTMPS URL and port 443; a timeout calls for checking the URL and encoder support; a startup error may mean the stream key is wrong or stale. If those settings are correct, investigate outbound connectivity with your VPS provider. YouTube does not publish a universal Ubuntu firewall command or an India-specific DNS fix for this problem.
Start with the exact URL and the error message
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream settings and copy the server URL shown there. To reveal the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon. YouTube may display an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so check that the scheme and server match the RTMPS values you intend to use. Do not guess the hostname or path. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe where to find the encrypted endpoint.
Then use the error type to choose the next check. A timeout alone does not identify DNS or a firewall as the cause; an SSL error has a more specific first diagnostic.

The port 443 suggestion is specifically for a persistent SSL error. It is not evidence that every failed connection is caused by a blocked port. Use the actual endpoint from your stream settings rather than any illustrative hostname in a help example.

Check the stream key and encoder before changing the VPS
Refresh the key in the encoder
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the current stream key and paste it into the encoder’s stream-key field. A stream key functions like a password for the stream: do not share it or publish it. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains how stream settings are managed, and its live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the current key when an encoder reports a startup error.
Confirm RTMPS support
If you see a timeout, verify that your encoder supports RTMPS and that it is configured for the protocol. Check the encoder’s documentation and update it if needed. YouTube identifies RTMP and RTMPS as supported streaming protocols; an encoder that cannot use the configured protocol cannot establish the intended connection. Investigate firewall and DNS on the VPS without guessing
There is no documented, provider-independent Ubuntu command or India-specific firewall rule that resolves this exact error. The relevant rules depend on your Ubuntu setup, any cloud security group or control-panel firewall, and your VPS host’s network policy.
- Identify the destination. Use the exact RTMPS hostname and port configured in the encoder. Do not test or allow a guessed YouTube hostname or URL path.
- Check outbound policy. Review the VPS firewall and provider security-group or egress settings for restrictions on connections to that destination. If the configuration is unclear, ask the provider whether outbound connections to the exact YouTube RTMPS endpoint are allowed.
- Check DNS resolution as a diagnostic, not a presumed fix. Confirm that the hostname copied from YouTube resolves from the VPS using its configured resolver. If it does not, examine the VPS resolver configuration and ask the provider about its DNS service. YouTube’s cited troubleshooting pages do not prescribe a particular DNS server or DNS change for this error.
- Retest after one change at a time. Record the original settings, change only the identified restriction or resolver problem, and retry the connection. This helps distinguish a demonstrated network issue from a coincidental change.
If the TLS error persists, YouTube’s documented port 443 check is the appropriate next step. Do not treat that advice as a universal firewall prescription. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance calls for testing the outbound internet connection when the encoder appears healthy; the VPS provider is the right source for instance-specific egress restrictions. Make sure the connection can carry the stream
A connection can succeed but still fail to deliver a stable stream if the VPS’s outbound bandwidth is insufficient. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom, accounting for the primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. Test the connection under conditions representative of the stream, and compare available upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular VPS route will be stable.
Once connection basics are sound, check that the media and encoder settings are compatible. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols, H.264, H.265 and AV1 as common video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the settings appropriate to your stream, then test and monitor stream health before an important broadcast.

When to escalate to the VPS provider
Contact the host when the endpoint, stream key and RTMPS-capable encoder are verified, but the VPS still cannot reach YouTube or the outbound connection is unreliable. Provide the exact error, the time it occurred, the RTMPS hostname and port (but never the stream key), and the results of your connectivity checks. Ask whether the instance or region has an outbound restriction affecting that destination. Consider changing hosts only after confirming a provider-side limitation and weighing the alternatives and support available.
