To stream a radio playlist to YouTube Live with GStreamer, have an application play each item, queue the next URI with playbin‘s about-to-finish signal, encode and mux the audio into FLV, then send it to YouTube using the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The pieces depend on your installed GStreamer plugins and media formats; there is no single command verified to work across systems. Test with rights-cleared audio before broadcasting.
What you need before building the pipeline
- A GStreamer installation with playback, audio conversion, encoder, FLV muxer, and RTMP sink components that support your chosen media and output formats.
- A playlist whose entries are absolute file URIs or valid network URIs.
playbin‘s URI property does not accept relative file paths. - A scheduled or live YouTube broadcast, with the current ingest URL and stream key available in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Permission for every track to be used in a YouTube live stream, including any required Content ID allowlisting.
GStreamer packages and plugins vary by operating system and release. Check what is installed rather than assuming an encoder or sink is present. rtmp2sink, for example, is documented in GStreamer’s Bad Plug-ins package. GStreamer rtmp2sink documentation

gst-inspect-1.0 rtmp2sinkInspect the relevant encoder and audio-conversion elements too, using the names provided by your installed packages. An element missing from gst-inspect-1.0 must be installed before you can use it.
Choose an ingest protocol

For the workflow below, RTMP/RTMPS is the simpler choice. Do not copy a hard-coded ingest URL from an old guide: YouTube provides the current endpoint and key for the broadcast, and its live resource describes primary and backup endpoints. YouTube Live streams resource

Build playlist playback that queues the next track
Use absolute URIs
Represent local files as absolute file URIs, and remote items as valid network URIs. For example, a local path such as /music/track-one.mp3 should be converted to a URI such as file:///music/track-one.mp3. Use your application or platform’s URI conversion utilities rather than assembling escaped file URIs by hand.
Queue the next item before the current one ends
In an application, connect to playbin‘s about-to-finish signal. When it fires, set the URI property to the next playlist item so the player can prepare it before playback reaches the boundary. GStreamer describes this as its mechanism for gapless-style queueing. GStreamer playbin documentation

Keep the signal callback small. It is emitted from a streaming thread, so avoid slow file or network operations and do not perform complicated playlist management there. For a dynamic playlist, protect shared queue access and hand off more involved work safely to another thread or the application’s main loop. GStreamer gapless playback design
Queueing the next URI enables gapless-style playback; it does not guarantee a silence-free transition for every file. The next file needs to be buffered early enough, and compressed audio can have codec delay or frame-size complications. Test the actual formats and transitions in your playlist.

Understand the simpler end-of-stream approach
An application can instead wait for an end-of-stream (EOS) message and then start playbin again with the next URI. This is simpler, but can leave a boundary gap. If you use this method, manage the playback and output state deliberately so the RTMP connection remains in the state you intend between tracks.
Connect playback to YouTube
The output path needs to decode the selected media, convert audio as required, encode it in a format supported by your YouTube ingest configuration, mux it into FLV, and send that muxed output to the RTMP sink. GStreamer’s documented rtmp2sink accepts FLV; its example connects an FLV muxer to the sink. The exact encoders, caps, and element properties depend on your local plugin set and destination requirements. GStreamer rtmp2sink documentation

Conceptually, the graph is:
playlist playback and decoding → audio conversion → audio encoder → FLV muxer → RTMP/RTMPS sinkTreat that as an architecture, not a ready-to-run gst-launch-1.0 command. The available sources document the components, but do not establish one static command that works across installations. Check the properties and supported caps of the elements installed on your machine with gst-inspect-1.0, then configure the graph for the media you will play and the output YouTube requires.
Get the current URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the scheduled/live broadcast.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the secure RTMPS URL YouTube supplies if you choose RTMPS.
- Provide the endpoint and key to your GStreamer application through a protected runtime configuration. Do not put a real key in public code, logs, screenshots, or examples.
- Start the GStreamer pipeline and check the broadcast in Live Control Room before sharing it with viewers.
A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Keep it private and rotate or replace it through YouTube if it is exposed.

Test and monitor the broadcast
- Watch the GStreamer bus: handle error and state-change messages so the application can report playback, decoding, connection, and pipeline failures. GStreamer playback reports errors and state changes on its bus. GStreamer playbin documentation
- Check Live Control Room: use its stream health information to confirm YouTube is receiving the broadcast.
- Listen from a viewer’s perspective: check that the live output plays, track boundaries behave as expected, and audio is present.
- Test the complete playlist: include local and remote sources if you use both, and test transitions among the formats you plan to broadcast.
- Test only with authorized material: a pipeline that connects successfully does not establish that the playlist is cleared for live use.
Clear music rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A track described as “free,” or bought from another source, is not automatically cleared for this use. YouTube says Content ID can flag music even when a creator acquired rights elsewhere; check that the license covers the actual live-stream use. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner uses Content ID and has not allowlisted your channel. Ask the owner or licensor to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist where applicable. YouTube describes copyright-safe music as public-domain material or music used with permission; verify the terms for each track rather than relying on a label or purchase receipt. Troubleshoot common failures
