No, YouTube has not eliminated signed-out viewing on televisions. Starting with a reported rollout in early 2025, the standard YouTube app removed the separate Guest profile tile from some Roku and Apple TV interfaces, with some Fire TV devices also affected. The replacement is usually labeled Watch as guest or Use signed out. The wording and location vary by device and app version.
What actually changed
On older TV-app interfaces, the account picker showed Guest alongside signed-in Google accounts and, where configured, YouTube Kids. Selecting Guest opened YouTube without an account.
A February 3, 2025 report documented the tile disappearing first on Roku and Apple TV, with reports from some Fire TV installations. The affected screens instead showed signed-in profiles, Add account, and a separate signed-out control. The report noted that the app could still describe the resulting session internally as guest mode, indicating a label and placement change rather than the removal of the underlying capability. 9to5Google’s report is the contemporaneous account of that rollout.
This was not established as a universal 2026 policy change. Later pages repeating the headline do not provide stronger evidence than the 2025 report, and YouTube’s current help documentation still describes signed-out viewing on supported TV, streaming-device and game-console installations.

Can you still watch YouTube without signing in?
Yes, when the app presents Watch as guest, Use signed out or equivalent wording. YouTube’s current privacy guidance says signed-out viewing uses recommendations based on signed-out watches on that device and does not affect the recommendations of a signed-in account. That is a narrower promise than saying the session is completely untracked.
The account picker may no longer contain a tile literally named Guest. Look for the signed-out command below the profile list, in the account-management screen, or in the profile menu. Menu names can change during staged app rollouts.
How to watch without an account
- Open the standard YouTube app on the television or streaming device.
- Open the profile or account picker. If playback starts inside an account, open the left navigation, choose the profile picture or account icon, and open the accounts page.
- Select Watch as guest, Use signed out or the available Guest option.
- Complete a parent-code prompt if one appears.
YouTube’s current instructions use Watch as guest; older help pages and screenshots may still say Guest or Guest account. If the control is absent, check that you are in the standard YouTube app rather than YouTube TV, then consider app-version, rollout and parental-control differences.

What happens to recommendations and watch history?
Signed-out session
YouTube says videos watched through Watch as guest are used for signed-out recommendations on the device and do not change the recommendations of a signed-in account. Do not treat that statement as a guarantee that YouTube records nothing outside the account’s recommendation system.

If a visitor selects a household member’s profile, viewing is associated with that Google account and can influence its history and recommendations. Check the active profile before starting playback; the signed-out control is safer for occasional visitors.
Device and app differences
| Platform or app | What is established | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Roku | The dedicated YouTube Guest tile was among the first reported removals. | Look for Watch as guest or Use signed out in YouTube’s account screen. |
| Apple TV | The separate YouTube Guest profile was also reported as removed. | The signed-out replacement depends on the installed YouTube build. |
| Fire TV | Some devices were reported to show the changed interface. | Treat behavior as version- and account-dependent. |
| Android TV and Google TV | The February 2025 report initially found no change there. | That did not establish a permanent exemption; current YouTube documentation describes Watch as guest broadly. |
| YouTube TV | This is a separate product and app from standard YouTube. | YouTube TV’s service requires sign-in; its account menus are not the anonymous viewing flow described here. |

Privacy controls for a shared television
Prevent accidental use of a personal account
- Ask visitors to select Watch as guest or Use signed out, not a household profile.
- Use a separate Google account for a regular household member instead of sharing one profile.
- Enable YouTube’s device account lock or parent code where available. YouTube says the four-digit code is specific to that device and is not a replacement for a Google Account password.
YouTube says a parent code can block children from watching while signed out and can restrict access to older household members’ accounts. See YouTube’s TV parent-code guidance.
Family-group profiles
The TV app’s “Who’s Watching” screen may automatically show members of a Google Family Group as signed-out profile choices. Those people must select their profile and authenticate with their own credentials, subject to account conditions. YouTube provides a device-specific setting to stop displaying family-group members; this can make a newer account picker look different from older screenshots. Details are in Manage your account and privacy on YouTube for TV.
Hotels, rentals and borrowed devices
Remove personal accounts before leaving a television. On the device, open YouTube’s left menu, choose the profile picture, select the account and choose Remove account. If you no longer have access, use Google Account device activity to sign out, or revoke YouTube-on-TV access through Google Account permissions. YouTube documents both methods at Sign out or remove an account from YouTube on TV.

Do not confuse YouTube guest viewing with Roku Guest Mode
YouTube Watch as guest is a mode inside the YouTube app. Roku’s system-level Guest Mode is an operating-system feature that lets visitors use a Roku device with their own accounts across supported apps. It requires a Roku PIN and has regional limits; Roku lists the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Latin America, France, Mexico and Australia among supported regions, while Germany is listed as unavailable. See Roku’s Guest Mode support page.

There is no Guest tile and no obvious alternative
Open the full account-management view and inspect below the account list for Watch as guest or Use signed out. The app may have moved the command rather than removed signed-out viewing. A different app version or a staged rollout can also explain the difference between two televisions.
A PIN is required
A parent code may be enabled. The code can restrict signed-out viewing as well as access to other household accounts; it must be entered or changed by the person who configured the device.

Family members appear unexpectedly
The TV may be displaying Google Family Group profiles. Use YouTube’s on-device opt-out setting if those profiles should not appear.
Recommendations changed after a visitor watched
The visitor probably selected a signed-in profile. Review the active account and, if needed, review or clear that account’s watch history. The no-impact recommendation statement applies to signed-out viewing, not videos watched while signed in.
The instructions do not match the screen
Confirm the app name. Standard YouTube and YouTube TV have different account flows, and older YouTube help pages retain Guest terminology while newer pages use Watch as guest.
Bottom line
YouTube removed the visible Guest profile entry from parts of its TV-app interface, beginning with reported Roku and Apple TV changes in early 2025. It did not, according to its current documentation, abolish signed-out viewing. On a shared television, choose Watch as guest or Use signed out, verify the active profile before playback, and remove personal accounts from devices you do not control.
