YouTube announced a set of Premium experiments on January 22, 2025, including up to 256 kbps audio for eligible music videos and expanded mobile playback speeds that could reach 4x. The changes were designed to give subscribers more control over how they watch and listen—not to turn every YouTube video into lossless audio or make every Premium feature available on every device.
What YouTube announced
The January 22 announcement grouped several Premium tests and rollouts under a broader push toward control and convenience. The two headline changes were:
- Higher-quality audio: Premium users could receive audio at up to 256 kbps for eligible music videos and Art Tracks.
- Faster playback on mobile: YouTube expanded playback-speed options, with the experiment eventually reaching speeds of up to 4x.
YouTube also highlighted three related features:
- Jump Ahead on the web, which uses likely audience skip points to move a viewer toward a more engaging section of a video.
- Picture-in-picture for YouTube Shorts on iOS.
- Smart Downloads for YouTube Shorts on iOS.
Premium members could opt into multiple available experiments through YouTube’s experimental-features page. Availability could vary by account, device, country, operating system, and the stage of each test.
Higher-quality audio is capped at 256 kbps
YouTube’s current Premium documentation describes high-quality audio in narrower terms than some headlines suggest. On eligible music videos and Art Tracks, Premium can provide audio at up to 256 kbps in the YouTube and YouTube Music apps.

- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
That does not mean every track is delivered at 256 kbps. Two limitations matter:
- The original upload sets a ceiling. If the source was uploaded at 128 kbps, YouTube cannot recreate information that was never present and deliver a genuinely higher-quality 256-kbps source.
- The connection affects delivery. YouTube can select a lower-quality stream when network conditions are not suitable for stable high-quality playback.
Accordingly, this feature should not be described as lossless, hi-res, or universally available 256-kbps playback. It is a higher-bitrate option for qualifying music content when both the source and connection support it.
Where to choose the audio quality
In the YouTube mobile app, users can choose an audio-quality preference of Auto or High under the app’s quality settings. Auto is intended to select high-quality audio when network conditions are suitable for a stable experience.
On a smart TV, streaming device, or game console, open the video player’s Settings menu and look for Audio. The precise presentation can differ by device and app version, but YouTube documents high-quality-audio controls for these larger-screen environments as well.

Playback speeds: the 4x experiment and the current Auto speed feature are not identical
The original announcement presented expanded manual playback speeds on mobile as a Premium experiment, with options eventually reaching 4x. That is useful for viewers who want to move quickly through a long lecture, interview, explainer, or documentary segment.

- Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
- Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
- Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
- Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
- AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.
YouTube’s current help documentation prominently describes a related feature called Auto speed. Rather than applying one speed to an entire video, Auto speed can dynamically adjust playback during portions such as slower speech or a lengthy introduction. A viewer can select a minimum baseline from 1x through 4x.
These descriptions should not be treated as proof that every Premium subscriber now has the same manual and automated controls. The January 2025 announcement concerned the expanded speed experiment; the current documentation describes the behavior and restrictions of Auto speed.

Current Auto speed restrictions
According to YouTube’s current documentation, Auto speed is limited to:
- YouTube Premium members
- The Android mobile app
- English-language content
It is excluded from Shorts, Premieres, live streams, music, films, and shows. Auto speed also applies only for the current app session. If the app is closed and reopened, the viewer must enable it again.
That makes the feature particularly relevant to English-language educational videos, interviews, and documentary-related viewing on Android—but not a universal 4x switch for all YouTube content. iPhone, iPad, desktop, TV, and console users may see different controls, and product experiments can change over time.
Who benefits most?
Music-video listeners
Listeners with eligible music videos or Art Tracks may notice clearer or fuller playback when YouTube can supply the higher-bitrate stream. The difference will depend on the original upload, the listener’s connection, the device, and the rest of the audio chain.

For private listening, wireless headphones can be a practical choice. They can make it easier to focus on music while watching from a phone or tablet, but they do not raise YouTube’s bitrate or unlock the Premium setting.
Documentary, educational, and podcast viewers
Speed controls are more immediately useful for long-form spoken content. A viewer can use a faster baseline to get through introductions, repeated explanations, or familiar material, then return to 1x when a complicated argument or important interview passage deserves closer attention.
Auto speed is potentially useful in this context because it can vary the pace instead of forcing the entire video to run at one fixed rate. Its English-language and Android-only limitations still matter, particularly for viewers watching translated documentaries or using another mobile platform.
People watching on a TV or external audio system
YouTube documents high-quality-audio settings on smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles. A Bluetooth speaker or a better-connected home audio system may be useful for listening in a room, but neither is required for Premium audio and neither changes the source file’s quality.

The most sensible hardware decision depends on where you listen:
- Wireless or Bluetooth headphones: best for private listening on a phone, tablet, or computer.
- External speakers: better suited to shared listening through a TV, streaming device, console, or home setup.
- Existing wired headphones or speakers: perfectly adequate if they already provide the comfort and clarity you want.
Do not buy new hardware on the assumption that it will unlock 256-kbps playback. The Premium feature is controlled by YouTube, the eligibility of the content, the upload quality, and network conditions. Hardware only determines how the delivered signal reaches your ears.
Other Premium benefits in the same product strategy
The announcement’s broader message was that Premium is becoming a collection of viewing and listening controls rather than a single audio upgrade. Depending on the content, platform, and account, Premium also includes:
- Background play
- Offline downloads
- Picture-in-picture for supported content
- Queueing on supported mobile devices
- Jump Ahead
- Enhanced-bitrate 1080p Premium for eligible 1080p uploads
- Access to YouTube Music Premium
YouTube separately announced a U.S. offer combining YouTube Premium with a Google One Premium-or-higher plan that included 2 TB of storage. That bundle is a separate commercial offer, not part of the technical audio and playback-speed experiments.

What Premium does—and does not—guarantee
| Expectation | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| “Premium gives every video 256-kbps audio.” | No. The higher-quality option applies to eligible music videos and Art Tracks, and the source upload and connection still matter. |
| “256 kbps means lossless or hi-res.” | No. YouTube describes a bitrate ceiling, not lossless or hi-res audio. |
| “Every Premium user gets 4x playback everywhere.” | No. The 4x capability was announced as a mobile experiment; current Auto speed documentation has Android, English-language, content, and session restrictions. |
| “A new speaker or headphones will improve the YouTube stream.” | No. Hardware can improve comfort or audibility, but it does not increase YouTube’s bitrate. |
| “The January 2025 announcement was a new August 2026 launch.” | No. The announcement date was January 22, 2025. Later availability should be checked in the relevant YouTube app and account. |
How to check whether the features are available
- Confirm that the account has an active YouTube Premium membership.
- Open youtube.com/new to see experiments currently offered to that account.
- For audio, open a qualifying music video or Art Track and inspect the app’s quality settings. Choose High where available, or leave the setting on Auto for adaptive selection.
- On a TV, streaming device, or console, open the player’s Settings menu and check Audio.
- On Android, test the playback controls on eligible English-language content. Look for Auto speed and remember that it may need to be enabled again after restarting the app.
- If a control is missing, do not assume the subscription is defective. Check the device, app version, language, content category, country, and whether the feature is still an experiment.
The practical takeaway
YouTube’s Premium changes are useful, but their benefits are specific. The audio experiment can improve the available stream for qualifying music videos and Art Tracks, up to 256 kbps, when the upload and network support it. The playback changes can help compress long-form viewing, although the current Auto speed feature is much more restricted than a universal 4x control.
For documentary viewers, the speed tools may be the more consequential addition. For music listeners, the audio option is a welcome quality choice—but it is not a guarantee of lossless sound. In both cases, availability depends on the combination of Premium status, device, content, language, connection, and YouTube’s current product rollout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did YouTube launch 4x playback for all Premium users?
No. YouTube announced expanded mobile playback speeds as a Premium experiment on January 22, 2025. Its current documentation describes Auto speed with a 1x-to-4x baseline, but limits that feature to Premium members using the Android app with English-language content and excludes several content types.
Is YouTube Premium’s 256-kbps audio lossless?
No. YouTube describes high-quality audio at up to 256 kbps for eligible music videos and Art Tracks. It is not lossless or hi-res playback, and the actual result depends on the original upload and network conditions.
Where can I enable YouTube’s high-quality audio setting?
In the YouTube mobile app, look under the app’s quality settings for Auto or High. On smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, open the video player’s Settings menu and select Audio where the option is available.
Why can’t I find Auto speed on my device?
The current documentation limits Auto speed to YouTube Premium members using the Android mobile app with English-language content. It also excludes Shorts, Premieres, live streams, music, films, and shows. Experimental availability can change by account, country, device, and app version.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: YouTube’s January 22, 2025 Premium update added meaningful controls, but not universal upgrades. Eligible music videos and Art Tracks can reach up to 256 kbps when the source and connection permit it, while current Auto speed controls can help some Android users move through English-language long-form content faster. Neither feature guarantees lossless audio or identical availability across YouTube’s apps and devices.
