Short answer: YouTube Premium removes YouTube-served ads before and during covered videos, plus third-party banner and search ads. It does not make every video or YouTube surface commercial-free. A creator’s sponsor read, product placement, podcast promotion, or a promotion during a live event can still appear.
What YouTube Premium removes
YouTube describes Premium’s ad-free benefit as removing ads before and during videos, along with third-party banner and search ads. The distinction is between advertising delivered through YouTube’s ad system and commercial material that is already part of a video or presented through another feature. So if a conventional pre-roll or mid-roll ad plays during an ordinary YouTube video while you are signed in to the account with full Premium, that is different from a creator talking about a sponsor. It is worth checking your account and viewing setup rather than assuming that such an ad is an expected Premium limitation.

What can still look like an ad
Premium does not edit or replace the video a creator uploaded. A sponsor segment recorded into the episode remains there, just as a product placement or endorsement does. YouTube says Premium viewers may still see sponsored-content disclosures added by creators; those disclosures do not mean Premium has served a conventional ad. See YouTube’s paid-promotion guidance.

YouTube also lists creator-controlled promotional links and features among the material that can remain. Its troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that podcast branding and promotions embedded by creators may still appear. Ads or promotions may also appear during live events, including sports, and on Primetime Channels. These are exceptions to the ordinary ad-removal benefit, not proof that every standard video should contain YouTube-served ads. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and its Premium restrictions.

Quickly identify what you are seeing
- The message is spoken by the host, or appears as a product in the footage: it is likely a creator sponsorship, endorsement, or placement. Premium does not remove content baked into the video.
- A link, merchandise shelf, membership prompt, or event promotion appears around the video: this may be a creator-controlled feature, rather than an ad inserted into the video stream.
- The video is a live event, podcast, or Primetime Channel: the usual Premium ad-removal expectation may not apply in the same way.
- A separate ad plays before or during an ordinary video: check whether you are signed in to the right account, using full YouTube Premium, and watching in a supported YouTube context.
This is a practical guide, not a guarantee that every feature looks or behaves identically on every device.
If a normal YouTube ad appears, check these things
- Confirm the account. Make sure YouTube is signed in to the Google account that holds the Premium membership. A subscription on another account will not cover the account you are watching with.
- Check the plan. YouTube Music Premium alone is not the full YouTube Premium video-ad benefit. Premium Lite is also a narrower plan, not a substitute for every full Premium feature.
- Check private browsing. Incognito or another private window may not carry your Premium sign-in state.
- Check where playback started. YouTube says ads may appear when watching outside the YouTube app or in another app, where the Premium session may not be recognized.
- Check the video and location. Live events, Primetime Channels, and country or region availability can affect what benefits apply. Plan features can vary by country, device, and plan.
- Update the YouTube app and retry. If the issue continues, compare playback on another supported device or in the YouTube app. App labels and support flows can change, so no single reset step is guaranteed to fix every case.
- Record the details. Save the video URL, device and app, time, and whether the message appeared before the video, during it, or as part of the content. If it was a conventional YouTube-served ad despite the checks above, contact YouTube paid-service support.
Premium versus Premium Lite
Full YouTube Premium is the better fit if you want conventional YouTube ad removal along with benefits such as YouTube Music, offline downloads, and background play. Premium Lite is a narrower option intended to make most videos ad-free; it is not a promise that every category or format will be covered identically, and it does not offer the full Premium bundle. YouTube’s plan availability, features, and prices can change by country and over time, so check the options and checkout price shown for your location at YouTube Premium. If creator-read sponsorships are the main thing bothering you, neither full Premium nor Lite should be treated as a way to erase them. Premium is a poor fit if that is your only goal.
Can you skip sponsor segments?
Sometimes. You can manually skip ahead when the creator provides chapters or a visible skip point, though that will not remove product placement or subtle endorsements. A third-party project such as SponsorBlock lets users skip community-identified segments in supported clients. It is not a YouTube feature, and its coverage depends on community submissions. Compatibility varies across browsers, mobile apps, TVs, and other devices; segments can be missed, and settings may also skip self-promotion or other categories. Check the project’s current compatibility and consider the trade-offs before relying on it.

Does Premium still support creators?
YouTube says it shares part of a Premium member’s subscription revenue with creators, with the amount influenced by what that member watches. That is separate from a creator’s direct sponsorship deal: Premium revenue sharing does not mean the creator’s sponsor segment will be removed. See YouTube’s explanation of Premium creator revenue.
