Yes—the price increase behind this headline was real, but it refers to a September 2024 event, not a newly confirmed 2026 rise. Contemporary reports said YouTube increased Premium prices for Individual and Family memberships in at least 15–16 countries, mainly in Europe, with changes reported to take effect around November 2024. Prices were not uniform, and the amount you actually pay depends on your country, taxes, plan and billing platform. Your account’s Purchases & memberships page is the authoritative source for the current recurring charge.
What happened in 2024?
In September 2024, subscribers in multiple markets received notices that YouTube Premium prices were changing. Reports described increases to both Individual and Family plans, with billing at the higher rate generally beginning around November after advance notice. The reports came from subscriber notices and secondary coverage rather than one public Google price table covering every country.
As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence does not establish a separate worldwide increase matching the headline. It is therefore more accurate to treat this as an explanation of the 2024 price event and a guide to checking your current account.

Which countries were reportedly affected?
Contemporary reporting identified the following markets. The list should not be read as exhaustive, and a country’s inclusion does not mean every plan or billing method changed by the same amount.

Some coverage described “over 15 countries,” while other accounts said at least 16. The difference reflects how reports counted markets and should not be interpreted as an official global total. See the contemporary report at Android Headlines.
How much did the price rise?
The clearest published examples are market-specific reports, not a universal YouTube price list.

Other contemporary coverage characterized some increases as 30–50%, but that is a reported range or maximum, not an average for all subscribers. Currency conversion, VAT or sales tax, local rounding and the payment platform can all change the comparison. Read the account-specific amount before deciding that your increase matches someone else’s.

YouTube’s official explanation for membership price changes is that market conditions, inflation and local tax changes can require updates. Its help documentation says prices may change and that existing members should receive at least 30 days’ notice.

Subscriber emails described in 2024 coverage also referred to continued investment in the service and support for creators and artists. That is company messaging reported from customer communications, not an independently measured breakdown of where the additional revenue goes. When does the higher charge begin?
For an existing member, YouTube generally applies a new price at the first billing cycle occurring at least 30 days after the increase notice. The service normally continues without interruption unless you cancel. Some countries require the member to acknowledge the change before the subscription continues. A paused membership uses the new price when it is resumed.
New subscribers see the price displayed at signup. Because the notice date, billing date and local tax rules differ, an email saying a change is coming does not necessarily mean the next immediate payment will be higher.
Apple billing can produce a different result
Premium purchased through Apple may show a different price from a membership billed directly by Google. Reports from 2024 said some Apple-billed users saw larger increases, but there is no single fixed “Apple surcharge” that applies in every country or plan.

To identify the route that controls your subscription:
- For direct YouTube or Google billing, use YouTube’s paid-membership page.
- For an iPhone or iPad purchase billed by Apple, manage it in your Apple subscriptions or iTunes account.
Check the current offer before cancelling one route and signing up through another; cancelling does not guarantee that a former grandfathered price will return.
How to verify your own Premium price
- Open YouTube while signed in to the Google account that owns the membership.
- Select Purchases & memberships.
- Open the YouTube Premium membership.
- Record the current recurring price, plan type, next billing date and billing platform.
- Read any notice requiring acceptance of a price change.
- Compare the displayed amount with your previous invoice or bank statement.
YouTube specifically directs members to this account area for the current price and billing details. It is more reliable than an old article, a screenshot from another country or a currency-conversion estimate.

Depending on location and product edition, full YouTube Premium includes ad-free viewing, background playback, offline downloads and YouTube Music Premium. Benefits can vary by country and while travelling, so verify the features offered in your market rather than assuming every subscriber receives an identical package.

Should you keep, change or cancel?
Keep full Premium when the bundle is heavily used
- Your household watches enough YouTube for ad removal to have substantial value.
- You use YouTube Music instead of, or alongside, another music service.
- Background playback and downloads matter on mobile devices or during travel.
- A Family membership is shared only with people who meet YouTube’s same-household rule.
Consider a lower-cost or different plan
Premium Lite may cost less where offered, but its ad and feature coverage differs by country and content type. It is not automatically a full replacement for Premium or YouTube Music Premium; check the local description at YouTube’s plan documentation.
Annual or prepaid Premium can suit an individual who expects to keep the service for a full year and can pay upfront. YouTube lists availability in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Thailand, India, Japan and Turkey, but availability and price can change. The plan is non-recurring and generally less flexible than monthly billing. Details are at YouTube’s annual-plan help page.
Student, Two-person and Family options exist only in eligible markets and have their own requirements. An eligible Google One bundle may also provide a YouTube benefit; compare the total bundle cost with standalone Premium before upgrading a Google One plan solely for that reason. Cancel when the features no longer justify the charge
Cancellation is rational if you mainly wanted ad removal, rarely use YouTube Music, never download or use background playback, or can no longer justify the new monthly cost. Cancel before the next applicable billing date through the same platform that bills you; access normally remains available through the paid period under the billing terms.

Travel, family and VPN restrictions
YouTube expects a membership to be used predominantly in the country where it was purchased. Moving or travelling for more than 30 days can lead to action, including cancellation. Misrepresenting your signup country or using a VPN to obtain a cheaper regional price can violate YouTube’s rules, and a local payment method may be required. A VPN alone does not establish eligibility. See YouTube’s country and family requirements, payment-method rules and country-verification troubleshooting.
Family sharing is also location-limited: members must live at the same residential address as the family manager, and YouTube says an electronic check-in occurs every 30 days. Friends or relatives in different homes are not a compliant substitute for a Family plan.
Check for duplicate or overlapping subscriptions
YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, while a YouTube Music Premium subscription alone does not include all video Premium benefits. If you hold both, review Purchases & memberships and your Apple or Google payment history before cancelling anything. A duplicate subscription can make the increase appear larger than it is because two separate services are being charged.

What the headline means now
The 2024 increase was genuine and affected multiple countries, plans and billing channels, but there is no single global Premium price or one universal percentage increase. Reports of €13.99 Individual pricing, roughly €26 Family pricing and larger Apple-billed increases describe particular markets and accounts. For any decision in 2026, use the amount and next billing date shown in your own account, then compare that specific cost with the features and legitimate alternatives available where you live.
