The claim refers mainly to an international pricing wave reported in September 2024. It should not be confused with a separate U.S. increase that took effect for existing subscribers in 2026.
The 2024 reports were based largely on subscriber price-change notices and contemporaneous reporting rather than one complete Google price table. The safest description is that YouTube raised prices in several countries, with some family plans increasing by about 55%.
What changed in September 2024?
YouTube Premium prices reportedly increased across multiple non-U.S. markets, particularly in Europe and other regions, during September 2024. Both individual and family plans were affected, but the size of the change depended on the country, currency and plan.
This was a regional pricing wave, not a single worldwide price change with one universal percentage. Google’s public support material explains how it handles price changes, but it does not provide a historical, country-by-country table for that 2024 event. How the 55% increase was calculated
The commonly cited example is a family plan that rose from €17.99 to €27.99.
- Price increase: €27.99 − €17.99 = €10.00.
- Percentage increase: €10.00 ÷ €17.99 × 100 = approximately 55.6%.
“Up to 55%” therefore refers to a particular plan and market. It does not mean every plan rose by 55%, and a family-plan increase can be much larger than an individual-plan increase in the same region. Comparing prices in local currency is more meaningful than converting every figure into U.S. dollars, because exchange rates, taxes and billing channels can distort the comparison.
Which countries had the largest increases?
Available reporting supports the existence of increases approaching 55%, but not a definitive global list that can be treated as an official Google price schedule. Subscriber emails, account screenshots and secondary reports are useful evidence, yet each may be specific to an account, billing channel or market.

Other markets and plans were reported to have changed, but a country should not be added to a definitive table without a contemporaneous notice, archived screenshot or strong corroboration. The evidence does not justify presenting the 55% figure as a universal increase.

Was this YouTube’s first price increase?
No. YouTube had already adjusted Premium prices in several countries in earlier waves. The September 2024 event was another international adjustment, and the timing and percentage differed by market. A report about that wave should therefore not be read as a claim that every affected country was seeing its first-ever increase.
Why did YouTube raise prices?
Google’s explanation is broad rather than specific to one country. Its price-change guidance says recurring prices may be updated to reflect market conditions, inflation, local taxes, licensing-cost changes, promotional changes, product changes or other business needs. YouTube also said in its later U.S. announcement that higher prices would help maintain the service and support creators and artists. That statement is Google’s rationale; it does not prove that the same factor caused every 2024 increase.

How the 2024 story differs from the 2026 U.S. increase
In April 2026, YouTube announced a separate U.S. price increase. New subscribers paid the new rates immediately, while existing subscribers began seeing them in billing cycles starting in June 2026.

How to check your own renewal price
International headlines cannot tell you what your account will be charged. Check the account that actually holds the subscription:
- Open YouTube.
- Select your profile picture.
- Choose Purchases and memberships.
- Review the plan name, billing interval, payment method and next billing price.
- Compare that amount with your previous charge or YouTube’s price-change email.
- Decide whether to keep, change, pause or cancel the membership.
Google normally gives existing members at least 30 days’ notice of a recurring-price increase. In general, the new amount starts on the first billing cycle occurring at least 30 days after the increase, although some countries require members to acknowledge and accept the change to continue service.
What cancellation, app-store billing and rejoining mean
- Cancellation: Access generally continues until the end of the current billing period rather than ending immediately.
- Rejoining: A later subscription may use the current price, so canceling can eliminate an older or grandfathered rate.
- Billing channel: Apple or Google Play may process the payment and handle billing support separately from direct web billing. Check the channel shown in your membership details before comparing prices or requesting a refund.
- Taxes and fees: The final charge can differ because of local taxes, bank fees and currency fluctuations.

Can a cheaper foreign subscription or VPN solve the problem?
YouTube does not authorize misrepresenting your country of residence to obtain a lower regional price. Its guidance says a subscription may be canceled if a user uses a VPN or otherwise circumvents regional availability or pricing rules. Premium is also intended to be used predominantly in the country where it was purchased; extended travel or relocation can trigger account action. See YouTube’s availability and travel guidance.
Converting a U.S. price into another currency is not a reliable way to identify a bargain, because local taxes, exchange rates and payment-channel pricing may change the real cost.

No. Google’s family-plan rules require members to live at the same residential address as the family manager, and YouTube performs periodic electronic check-ins. Sharing passwords, selling access or sublicensing a membership is also restricted by the paid-service terms. A family plan is suitable for a genuine household, not an informal group of friends who live elsewhere.
Which plan makes sense after a price increase?
Keep full Premium
Full Premium is easiest to justify if you watch YouTube daily, rely on background playback or offline downloads, or use YouTube Music enough to replace another music subscription. A legitimate same-household family plan can spread the cost across several users.

Consider Premium Lite where offered
Premium Lite may suit someone whose main objective is reducing advertisements and who does not need the full feature set. Availability and included features vary by market; it is not universally ad-free and should not be assumed to include full background play, downloads or YouTube Music. Check the local offer at YouTube Premium.
Consider canceling
Cancellation may make sense when you watch only occasionally, use none of the music, download or background features, or find that the new price exceeds the value you receive. Check the renewal date and billing terms before confirming.
Check legitimate discounts
Eligible students can review verification requirements at YouTube’s student-plan help page. Availability, eligibility and price vary by country, so no specific discount should be assumed without checking the local signup flow.
Bottom line
The approximately 55% figure is real for selected YouTube Premium plan-and-market combinations, including the reported €17.99-to-€27.99 family-plan example. It is not a worldwide increase. The September 2024 international wave and the separate 2026 U.S. increases should be treated as different events. To know your actual exposure, use YouTube’s Purchases and memberships page and rely on the price shown for your account, country and billing channel.
