YouTube expanded it in 2025, then announced in February 2026 that it would add background play and offline downloads for most eligible videos. It remains a limited alternative to full Premium: music, Shorts and some other content do not receive the same benefits.
What Premium Lite is—and how it changed
Premium Lite is a lower-cost YouTube subscription for people who mainly watch creator and entertainment videos and want fewer interruptions without paying for the full Premium bundle. YouTube’s March 5, 2025 announcement expanded the plan to the United States and additional markets. At that launch, YouTube said it would remove ads from most videos, but Lite did not include background play or downloads. The announced U.S. price was $7.99 per month at the time; it is a historical reference, not a guarantee of today’s price. YouTube’s 2025 announcement
On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced another change: background play and downloads for most eligible videos. The company said the features would begin rolling out immediately and reach markets where Lite was available over the following weeks. YouTube’s feature-update announcement
What Premium Lite includes now
- Fewer ads on most videos: Many ordinary creator and entertainment videos can be watched without ads, but “most” is not “all.”
- Background play: Eligible videos can continue playing when you switch apps or turn off the screen. It is not a universal feature for every type of content.
- Offline downloads: Most eligible videos can be saved for offline viewing in the YouTube app. YouTube describes this as in-app viewing, not as a transferable video file.
- YouTube and YouTube Kids: YouTube’s announcement says background play and downloads apply through those apps where they are available.
YouTube’s support announcement describes exclusions for Shorts and specified music-related content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs and some user-generated videos containing music-partner content.

What Lite still does not cover
Premium Lite is not an all-content ad-free pass and does not include YouTube Music Premium. Music content may still carry ads, and the new background-play and download benefits do not apply to every video. Shorts are also excluded from those new features. Ads may still appear around search or browsing, depending on the surface and market; do not assume that a Lite subscription removes every ad you encounter across YouTube.
That distinction matters most if you use YouTube as a music service. YouTube positions full Premium as the option for broader ad-free coverage, including music, and for YouTube Music Premium. YouTube’s comparison of the tiers

Who should choose Premium Lite?
Lite is most compelling if your viewing is mostly long-form creator content and you want fewer interruptions, plus the ability to download eligible videos or keep them playing in the background. It may suit people watching tutorials, gaming, cooking, comedy, news or commentary who rarely use YouTube for music. YouTube highlighted gaming, comedy, cooking and learning in its original description of the plan. YouTube’s 2025 announcement

When full Premium is the better fit
Choose full Premium if you regularly listen to music on YouTube, want YouTube Music Premium, or expect wider ad-free coverage across content. It is also the more appropriate tier if you frequently use background playback or downloads for music and do not want Lite’s content exclusions to determine whether a feature works. YouTube’s own distinction is that full Premium is intended for users who want all videos ad-free, including music, along with YouTube Music Premium. YouTube’s feature-update announcement

If ads appear or a feature does not work
Ads still appear
First consider whether the content is music-related or the ad appeared on a surface such as Shorts, search or browsing rather than during an eligible ordinary video. If the content should be covered, check that the Lite membership is active and that YouTube is signed into the Google account that holds it. You can review membership status in YouTube’s paid memberships settings.
Background play does not work
- Confirm that Premium Lite is active and the app is signed into the subscribed account.
- Update the YouTube or YouTube Kids app.
- Test with a conventional non-music video rather than a Short or music-related video.
- Check whether Lite is offered in your country and whether the feature rollout has reached your account.
- If it still fails, contact YouTube paid-services support rather than assuming every video is eligible.
Downloads are unavailable
A video may be ineligible, including because it is a Short or music-related; the device may also be short on storage, the app may need updating, the download may have expired or require online verification, or the membership may not be active. Downloads are for offline playback within YouTube, not unrestricted files for other apps.
