There is no single break-even price. A Raspberry Pi 4’s electricity cost depends on the average power draw of the complete setup, how long it runs, and your local electricity tariff. The recommended 15 W power supply is not the Pi’s continuous consumption. A cloud VPS price is not automatically a like-for-like alternative: first establish whether the Pi is playing a YouTube playlist locally or hosting a service or media.
What does “YouTube playlist stream” mean?
The comparison depends on the job you want done. A Pi playing videos from a YouTube playlist is a playback client; a Pi running playlist-control software or hosting media is doing a different job. A generic cloud VPS price does not establish that the VPS can perform the same task, or that it will deliver YouTube playback. Compare equivalent workloads before treating either option as a substitute.
- Local playback: the Pi plays videos from YouTube, with its display and other connected equipment contributing to the setup’s power use.
- Playlist or media service: the Pi hosts an application, controls a playlist, or serves media. Cloud suitability and any data-transfer requirements depend on the specific service and deployment.
How much power does a Raspberry Pi 4 use?
Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A (15 W) USB-C power supply for the Pi 4. That rating describes the supply’s capacity, not the board’s expected continuous draw. Raspberry Pi’s documentation gives approximate readings of 0.6 A average at idle and 0.78 A average during H.264 video playback. Those measurements used a standard OS image from June 2019 and included HDMI, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet; connected devices can change the result. Raspberry Pi’s power-supply and power-measurement documentation describes the figures and their setup.
For another historical data point, a Raspberry Pi firmware test reported 2.1 W at idle and 6.41 W under a synthetic load. These are readings from a specific 2019 test, not universal values for every Pi 4, software version, or workload. Alex Bate wrote in that test that firmware updates over the preceding four months had reduced idle power by more than half a watt and fully loaded power by nearly a watt. The 28 November 2019 thermal-testing article gives the test context.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because published readings depend on the test setup and date, measuring the complete setup at the wall is the best way to estimate your own use. Include any peripherals that will stay connected, not just the board.

- Energy in kWh: average watts Ă— operating hours Ă· 1,000.
- Energy cost: kWh Ă— your price per kWh.
For example, if a complete setup averaged 6 W for 24 hours, it would use 6 Ă— 24 Ă· 1,000 = 0.144 kWh that day. Multiply 0.144 by your local tariff to get the daily electricity cost. This is an arithmetic example, not a claim that every Pi 4 setup draws 6 W.
For a monthly estimate, use the hours it actually runs during the month and the same local tariff. If you want a precise result, measure average wall draw during the relevant activity; a brief idle reading may not represent continuous playback or a hosted service.

What does cloud hosting cost?
A reference point is AWS Lightsail’s entry public-IPv4 Linux VPS bundle, listed at $5 USD per month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, a 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB of transfer. This is a bundled hosting plan, not an electricity-only comparison or proof that the VPS can perform the same task as a Pi playing YouTube. Price and regional terms can change; check AWS Lightsail’s current pricing and region details before budgeting.
Before comparing that monthly charge with a Pi’s electricity bill, identify the workload and check whether the VPS resources and transfer allowance meet it. Additional services or usage may affect cloud costs, and the cited bundle alone does not settle those requirements.

Compare total costs, not just electricity and rent
| Cost or requirement | Raspberry Pi 4 | AWS Lightsail reference |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring base cost | Electricity, calculated from measured average watts, runtime, and your local tariff | $5 USD/month for the cited entry public-IPv4 Linux bundle; price and regional terms are subject to change |
| One-time hardware | Board, power supply, storage, and any required peripherals; purchase costs are separate from electricity | No Pi hardware required, but the listed VPS bundle’s scope and suitability depend on the workload |
| Included compute, storage, transfer | Determined by the hardware and network connection you provide | 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer in the cited bundle |
| Workload equivalence | Depends on whether the Pi plays YouTube locally or hosts a service or media | Not established by the bundle price; verify that the VPS can do the intended job |
A sound comparison also accounts for internet service, maintenance, and any relevant cloud add-ons. The available figures do not establish one universal break-even point: electricity tariffs, actual Pi draw, hardware already owned, workloads, and transfer needs vary.

If by “playlist stream” you mean keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than simply playing a YouTube playlist on a screen, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option designed for that task. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
