In YouTube CEO Neal Mohan’s description of the living-room experience, the paused video “squeezes back” and an ad plays beside it. The available announcements describe a connected-TV pilot and a TV-focused format—not a universal feature on every phone, computer, television, country, or account.
What are YouTube pause ads?
Pause ads are display-style ads associated with pausing YouTube on a television or other connected-TV environment. They are intended to add advertising space without inserting a commercial into the middle of active playback.
On May 15, 2025, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan described the layout at the MoffettNathanson Media, Internet, and Communications Conference: “when you’re on your living room screen and you pause the video that you’re watching, there’s a squeezeback type of experience for users, and then you can see an ad that’s playing.”
That means the video remains paused while the on-screen composition changes to make room for the advertisement. It does not mean that every pause automatically produces an ad.

Where YouTube has described the format
Connected TVs and living-room screens
Alphabet’s Q1 2024 earnings call described Pause Ads as a pilot on connected TVs. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler called it “a new non-interruptive ad format that appears when users pause their organic content” in the company’s April 25, 2024 earnings-call transcript.
YouTube’s 2025 priorities also group pause ads with formats designed for the big screen in its official blog post. These descriptions establish the living-room and connected-TV focus, but they do not provide a current device-by-device or country-by-country availability list.

What has not been established
- There is no public rollout matrix in the cited announcements covering every television platform, market, or account type.
- The sources do not say that every pause triggers an ad.
- They do not establish whether YouTube Premium subscribers currently see pause ads.
- They do not show that the format has replaced pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll advertising.
How pause ads differ from ordinary YouTube ads
| Feature | Pause ads | Conventional video ads |
|---|---|---|
| When they appear | After a viewer pauses, where the format is enabled | Before, during, or after playback |
| Screen context | Official descriptions focus on connected TVs and living-room screens | Used across YouTube’s supported viewing environments |
| Effect on active playback | The video is already paused; the ad occupies part of the screen | Pre-roll and mid-roll ads can delay or interrupt viewing |
| Availability | Current eligibility by device, market, and account is not stated in the cited sources | Availability varies by video, viewer, market, and account |
Why YouTube is testing ads on pause
YouTube and Alphabet present the format as a way to create additional inventory during a natural break rather than interrupting a playing programme. “Non-interruptive” and “strong traction” are Alphabet’s descriptions of the pilot, not independent performance findings.
YouTube’s broader TV strategy reflects the amount of viewing that takes place on long-form content. A September 19, 2023 Google Ads & Commerce post reported that 65% of YouTube connected-TV watch time in the United States in December 2022 was on content lasting at least 21 minutes, based on YouTube internal data. The same post reported more than 700 million hours of YouTube viewing on TV screens daily in 2021. Both figures are historical and should not be read as current audience measurements.

That post also cited a 2022 U.S. Qualtrics survey of 312 adults in which 79% preferred video ads grouped together rather than distributed throughout long-form TV content. The result concerns grouped ad breaks; it did not directly test whether people prefer ads shown when they pause a video.
Why do I see an ad when I pause YouTube?
If you see an ad after pausing, your connected-TV app, account, location, and the video’s advertising eligibility may be included in the format’s rollout. The public statements do not identify a single switch that explains every occurrence, and they do not confirm that the same behavior applies to phones, browsers, or all television devices.

Pause the video again or resume playback to return to normal viewing. If the behavior changes after signing in, switching profiles, or using another device, that indicates different eligibility or ad-serving conditions; it is not evidence that pause ads are universal.

The cited YouTube and Alphabet materials do not document a user-facing setting specifically labeled “Pause Ads.” You can check the YouTube app’s current ad and privacy controls on your TV, but the available announcements do not promise that those controls disable this format.

YouTube Premium’s general ad-free positioning does not answer this specific question: none of the cited official sources states whether Premium members see pause ads. Treat Premium availability as unresolved rather than assuming either outcome.
What this means for viewers and advertisers
For viewers
- Seeing an ad while paused is consistent with the connected-TV format YouTube has described.
- It does not prove that ads will appear on every pause or every device.
- A rollout can differ by market, television platform, account, and video.
For advertisers
Pause ads offer an additional living-room placement tied to a viewer’s pause moment. The public sources show company interest and a pilot, but they do not publish a universal buying specification, reach guarantee, or independent lift study.
Timeline of YouTube’s pause-ad descriptions
- April 25, 2024: Alphabet reported “strong traction” from a connected-TV Pause Ads pilot in its Q1 earnings call.
- January 21, 2025: YouTube listed big-screen formats, including pause ads, among its priorities for the year.
- May 15, 2025: Neal Mohan publicly described the living-room “squeezeback” experience in which an ad appears when a paused video recedes.
These milestones show an evolution from pilot language to a public description of the TV experience. They still do not establish a complete present-day rollout for all viewers.
