Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe strongest way to limit YouTube is to combine YouTube’s own controls with your child’s device controls. YouTube Kids’ Timer can stop a YouTube Kids session; Google Family Link and Apple Screen Time can enforce app or device limits; Family Link Downtime can block access on a schedule. YouTube’s Take a Break and Bedtime tools are reminders a child can dismiss, while the Shorts setting targets Shorts-feed scrolling rather than all YouTube viewing.
The right combination depends on whether your child uses YouTube Kids, a supervised YouTube account or regular YouTube, and whether the device is Android, ChromeOS, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Xbox, a smart TV or a shared computer.
Six controls at a glance
| Feature | Works on | Type | Does it control all YouTube? | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Kids Timer | YouTube Kids app | Hard stop inside YouTube Kids | No | Young children and single sessions | Does not cover regular YouTube, browsers or other devices |
| Family Link app limit | Supported Android and ChromeOS devices | App restriction | No | Daily allowance for YouTube or YouTube Kids | Browser, TV, console and second-device access need separate controls |
| Family Link Downtime | Supervised Google devices | Scheduled device restriction | Device-wide | Bedtime and school hours | May also block useful apps |
| Take a Break | Eligible supervised YouTube accounts | Dismissible reminder | No | Building self-regulation | Can be dismissed; does not run for offline viewing or phone casting |
| Bedtime | Eligible supervised YouTube accounts | Dismissible reminder | No | Prompting an older child to stop | Not a device lock; can be postponed |
| Daily Shorts feed limit | Eligible supervised YouTube accounts | Targeted feed restriction | No | Reducing short-form scrolling | Long videos, playlists and other surfaces may remain available |
YouTube describes its child and supervised experiences and controls at YouTube Kids and its parental-control help page.
First identify the YouTube experience
YouTube Kids
YouTube Kids is designed for a more child-directed experience. Parents can choose an age setting or parent-approved content, create profiles, block videos and channels, control search and review history. Automated filters, human review and parent feedback are used, but YouTube does not guarantee that every recommendation is suitable; parents remain responsible for settings and supervision. See YouTube Kids.

Supervised kid or teen account
A supervised Google account gives parents content-level settings, channel blocking, autoplay controls, history controls, time-management reminders and, for eligible accounts, a Shorts-feed limit. Controls are managed through Family Center and availability can vary by age, country, device and account type. The official setup details are at YouTube’s supervised-account help page.
Unsupervised regular YouTube
A regular adult or unsupervised account is not governed by the child controls described here. Move the child to YouTube Kids or a supervised account before relying on these settings, and verify which account is signed in on every device.
1. YouTube Kids Timer
What it does
The Timer stops the YouTube Kids app when the selected viewing duration expires. The app remains frozen until a parent changes the setting, making this YouTube’s closest built-in hard stop for younger children.
How to set it
- Open YouTube Kids on the child’s device.
- Tap the Lock icon and complete parent verification.
- Open Timer.
- Choose the permitted duration and start the timer.
Labels can differ between Android, iPhone/iPad and the web version, so check the current interface on the child’s platform.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What it does not cover
- It applies to YouTube Kids, not automatically to regular YouTube, youtube.com in a browser or another video app.
- It is not a whole-device limit and does not follow the child to a smart TV, console or second device.
- A child can switch routes unless those routes are separately restricted.
Pair the Timer with Family Link or Apple Screen Time when the child can reach browsers or other devices.
2. Google Family Link app limits
What it does
Family Link can set an individual daily limit for YouTube or YouTube Kids, block supported apps and set broader device limits on supervised Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks. Google’s overview is at Family Link.

Setup path
- Open Family Link on the parent device and select the child.
- Open Screen time or App limits.
- Select YouTube or YouTube Kids.
- Set the daily allowance, save it and complete parent verification if requested.
For YouTube account settings, use Family Link → child → Controls → Content restrictions → YouTube, as documented at YouTube’s help page.
Limit versus reminder
A Family Link app limit is intended to restrict the app after its allowance is used. Take a Break is only a YouTube prompt. Do not treat the two as interchangeable.

Check that the correct child account and device are linked. A browser, shared computer, smart TV, console, adult account or second device may still provide access.
3. Family Link schedules and Downtime
Use it for time-of-day rules
Family Link provides daily limits plus schedules such as School Time and Downtime. Use Downtime to prevent YouTube access before school or after lights-out, while allowing essential communication, schoolwork, alarms and emergency functions where appropriate. Google lists these tools at Family Link.
A practical combination
- Set a daily YouTube or YouTube Kids app allowance.
- Set device-wide Downtime for bedtime and school hours.
- Review exceptions so necessary apps remain available.
Downtime is stronger than a YouTube-only rule but can block the entire device. It also does not control another family member’s device, a shared TV or console. Keep parent credentials and the device owner’s passcode private.
4. Take a Break reminders
What it does
For a supervised account, open the linked parent account in YouTube and go to You → Settings → Family Center → child’s account → Time management → Take a Break. At the selected interval, YouTube displays a reminder. The child can dismiss it or continue watching.

YouTube says the timer can reset when the teen closes the app, signs out, switches devices or pauses a video for more than 30 minutes. It does not run for offline videos or when casting from a phone. Details: YouTube supervised-account controls.
Use Take a Break with cooperative older children who need prompts, not as a guaranteed daily quota. Enforcement requires Family Link, Screen Time or another device-level control.
5. Bedtime reminders
Setup
- Sign in to YouTube with the linked parent account.
- Open You → Settings → Family Center.
- Select the child’s account and open Time management.
- Configure Bedtime.
The reminder is a prompt, not a lock. YouTube documents a Remind Me Again option after 15 minutes. It may not stop YouTube in a browser, on a television, on a console or on another device. Use Family Link Downtime or Apple Downtime when bedtime must be automatic. Source: YouTube’s help page.
6. Daily Shorts feed limits
What it controls
In Family Center, select the supervised account, open Time management and set the daily Shorts feed limit. Once the limit is reached, YouTube prevents further Shorts-feed scrolling until the limit resets the next morning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Beginning in March 2026, eligible supervised accounts can set the limit to zero. YouTube announced the change at YouTube’s official blog; the setup route is documented at YouTube’s help page.
Important boundary
This is a feed restriction, not a total YouTube limit. Long-form videos, playlists, livestreams, search results, embedded videos and other surfaces may remain available. A zero Shorts-feed setting should therefore be described as blocking Shorts-feed scrolling, not every short video on YouTube.

Enforcement by device
Android phones, tablets and Chromebooks
Use a supervised Google Account, Family Link app limit and Downtime. Then check browsers, additional Google accounts, casting targets and other installed video apps. Family Link is documented at families.google.com/familylink.
iPhone and iPad
Apple Screen Time generally provides the strongest built-in daily enforcement. On the parent or child’s device, use:
- Settings → Screen Time, then select the child under Family.
- Turn on Screen Time and create a Screen Time passcode.
- Open App Limits, add YouTube or YouTube Kids and set the allowance.
- Configure Downtime for school or bedtime.
- Review Content & Privacy Restrictions to prevent unwanted app installation, deletion or browser workarounds.
Through Family Sharing, a parent can manage the child’s Screen Time from the parent’s Apple device. Apple’s current guidance is at Apple Screen Time. Children can request exceptions, which the parent must approve or deny. Screen Time does not enforce rules on Android, Windows, televisions or consoles.
Windows and Xbox
Microsoft Family Safety supports app and game limits and screen-time schedules on connected Windows, Xbox and supported mobile configurations. See app and game limits and cross-device screen-time limits.
Microsoft states that app and game limits do not directly work on websites. Configure website blocking separately, otherwise youtube.com may remain available in a browser.
Smart TVs, consoles and shared computers
Neither a YouTube Kids Timer nor a phone app limit automatically governs every television, console or shared computer. Sign out of adult accounts, use each platform’s child profile and restrict casting or browser access where that platform allows it. A rule is only as strong as the least-controlled device the child can use.

It’s great for downloading games, videos, books, and music for their on-the-go educational entertainment.
Mixed-device households
Start with YouTube Kids or a supervised account, then apply each platform’s built-in controls. Consider a cross-platform service only if browsers, multiple operating systems and many devices cannot be covered reliably.
Stop the common workarounds
- Switching from YouTube Kids: restrict regular YouTube and browser access separately.
- Browser viewing: app limits may not cover youtube.com; configure website controls.
- Another device: check family tablets, parent phones, televisions and consoles.
- Casting or offline downloads: Take a Break does not run during phone casting or offline playback.
- Second accounts: keep the child on the supervised account and verify account switching is restricted where possible.
- Known passcodes: change the Screen Time passcode, Family Link credentials or device password if the child knows them.
- Other video apps: if the goal is less total video, review TikTok, Instagram, streaming apps and games rather than limiting YouTube alone.
Recommended combinations
Young child
Use YouTube Kids with parent-approved content or the most restrictive suitable age setting, disable search when appropriate, block unsuitable channels, start the Timer and add Family Link or Screen Time as a device backstop.
Android or Chromebook teen
Use a supervised YouTube account, set a Shorts-feed limit, add a Family Link YouTube app limit and schedule Downtime for school and bedtime. Add browser restrictions and check other devices.
iPhone or iPad teen
Use supervised YouTube with a Shorts limit, then enforce the daily allowance and schedule through Apple Screen Time. Keep the Screen Time passcode private and review exception requests.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Mixed-platform family
Use the free built-in controls first: YouTube Kids, Family Link, Apple Screen Time and Microsoft Family Safety. Escalate only when one dashboard, browser filtering or broader device coverage is worth the cost and privacy trade-offs.
Optional paid services
Paid tools are not required for a basic YouTube limit. They become relevant when parents need cross-platform scheduling, browser filtering, monitoring or one dashboard.
Bark
Bark’s official page lists Bark App Premium at $14 per month or $99 per year for Android, Bark App for iOS at $20 per month or $148 per year, and Bark App Jr at $5 per month or $49 per year. A seven-day free trial is advertised; plans and platform features can change. Bark offers schedules, app and website blocking, YouTube and broader activity monitoring, safety alerts and location features. iOS monitoring works differently because of Apple restrictions and deeper monitoring uses Bark Sync. It suits families seeking safety alerts as well as time limits, not parents who want only a free timer.
OurPact
OurPact’s pricing page lists Premium at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year and Premium+ at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, with a 14-day trial advertised. The free tier lists one child device, five manual blocks per month, one automated block schedule and browser blocking including Safari. Premium supports up to 20 child devices and adds more scheduling and app-rule options; higher tiers may include location and screenshot features. The page was updated January 21, 2025, so verify current prices and trial terms before subscribing.
