If YouTube is not loading, buffering, playing sound, opening videos, or working on your TV, first find out where the problem follows: the video, account, browser, device, or network. Try another video, another connection, and another device before changing advanced settings. Those three tests usually identify the right fix faster than clearing every cookie or reinstalling everything.
Try these fixes first
- Reload YouTube and play a different, previously working video.
- Open another website to check whether your connection is working.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or test another Wi-Fi network.
- Restart the YouTube app, browser, computer, phone, TV, or streaming device.
- Open YouTube in a private or Incognito window.
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers and privacy tools.
- Update the YouTube app, browser, operating system, and device firmware.
- Clear YouTube-specific site data or the app cache.
- Try another supported browser or device.
- If the problem affects multiple devices and networks, check YouTube Help and reputable outage-monitoring services before making major changes.
YouTube’s own guidance recommends checking browser updates, cache and cookies, extensions, DNS settings, connections, and device software. See its video-error troubleshooting guide and streaming troubleshooting guide.
Find the scope of the problem

If YouTube fails on several devices and networks, do not assume your browser is broken. Wait, check official YouTube channels or an outage monitor, and try again later. Do not label YouTube as “down” based on one device or one video.

- Hard-refresh the page.
- Try a private window with extensions disabled.
- Disable extensions one at a time, beginning with ad blockers, script blockers, and privacy tools.
- Clear YouTube’s cookies and site data rather than immediately deleting all browsing data.
- Update the browser and restart it.
- Try another current browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. YouTube no longer supports Internet Explorer.
- Restart the computer and router.
- Temporarily check VPN, proxy, antivirus, firewall, DNS, and parental-control settings.
YouTube recommends using a current compatible browser and clearing cache and cookies when loading or playback problems occur. Clearing all browser data is more thorough, but it signs you out of sites and removes saved preferences. YouTube-specific data is the safer first test.

If videos buffer, pause, or fall to low quality
Buffering can result from a congested Wi-Fi network, weak signal, ISP routing, a VPN, browser extensions, device limits, or YouTube-side congestion—not only from a slow internet plan.
- Pause downloads and other streams.
- Move closer to the router or test Ethernet.
- Lower the video quality temporarily. If lower resolution plays smoothly, the connection or device may be struggling with the selected format.
- Restart the router and test another connection.
- Close unnecessary tabs and applications.
- Try the official app or another browser.
- Temporarily disable VPNs and traffic-filtering software.
- Update the browser and device.
A rigid minimum-speed number is not reliable for every video: required bandwidth varies with resolution, connection quality, congestion, and device capability.
If videos will not play at all
Messages such as “An error occurred,” “Something went wrong,” “Playback error,” and “This video is unavailable” describe different problems.
- One video only: Check whether it is private, deleted, age-restricted, region-restricted, copyright-blocked, or unavailable to your account.
- Every video in one browser: Suspect extensions, corrupted site data, browser settings, or media components.
- Every device on one network: Check the router, DNS, ISP, parental controls, and network filtering.
- Every device and network: Investigate a service-wide issue or account problem.
Do not buy YouTube Premium expecting it to repair buffering, outages, broken apps, audio failures, or incompatible hardware.

Ad blockers and privacy extensions
YouTube advises checking ad-blocking extensions when playback fails. The cleanest test is a private or Incognito window with extensions disabled. If playback works there, re-enable extensions one at a time.
- Update the extension and its filter lists.
- Remove duplicate ad blockers or YouTube-specific extensions.
- Check whether antivirus or privacy software injects scripts into pages.
- Test both signed in and signed out.
A successful Incognito test does not prove that one particular extension is responsible. If YouTube also fails in clean browsers and the official mobile app, investigate the account, network, device, or service. Adblock Plus notes that YouTube behavior differs between desktop browsers and mobile devices; do not promise that any ad-blocking product will continue working with YouTube.
How to clear YouTube data safely
Start with YouTube-specific cookies and site data. Menu labels change between browser versions, but the relevant control is usually in the browser’s privacy or site-settings area: open the settings, search for site data, find youtube.com, and remove its stored data. Then reopen YouTube and sign in again if requested.
Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing cookies or site data can fix stale sessions, scripts, and playback settings, but may sign you out. It will not fix a YouTube outage, damaged hardware, or an ISP problem.

Fix YouTube on Android and iPhone
Android
- Force-close YouTube and reopen it.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Update YouTube through Google Play.
- Restart the phone and install available system updates.
- Open the phone’s app settings, select YouTube, and clear its cache.
- Check that the correct Google account is active.
- Test YouTube in a mobile browser.
iPhone and iPad
- Force-close and reopen YouTube.
- Switch networks and update the app in the App Store.
- Restart the device and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Confirm the correct Google account is selected.
- If the problem continues, offload or delete and reinstall YouTube. This may require signing in again and can remove local app data or downloads.
- Test YouTube in Safari or another supported browser.
Do not follow Android “clear app cache” instructions on iPhone or iPad; iOS generally requires offloading, deleting, or reinstalling when local app data is suspected.
Fix YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device
These steps apply broadly to smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and game consoles:
- Close and reopen YouTube.
- Restart the device.
- Unplug it for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try again.
- Update the YouTube app and the device firmware.
- Restart the router.
- Sign out of YouTube and sign back in.
- Remove and reinstall the app if the platform permits it.
- Test YouTube on a phone using the same Wi-Fi network.
Reinstalling may remove local settings and require another sign-in. YouTube specifically recommends power-cycling TV devices, checking app updates, and restarting the device.

- Check the video’s mute button and volume.
- Check whether the browser tab is muted.
- Check system volume and the selected output device.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers and test again.
- Play audio on another website.
- Restart the browser, app, or device.
- Test the YouTube app if the browser has no sound.
On a computer, changing hardware acceleration can be a later diagnostic step, but it is not a first-line audio fix.

Black screen, green screen, flickering, or stuttering
- Try another video, browser, and resolution.
- Update the browser and graphics driver.
- Restart the device.
- Disable extensions.
- Clear YouTube site data.
- Toggle hardware acceleration in the browser’s system or performance settings, then restart the browser.
Hardware acceleration is an advanced test, not a universal cure. Turning it off can increase CPU use and reduce performance; revert the change if it does not help. Browser playback can also depend on graphics drivers, hardware decoding, protected content, DRM, and Widevine components. - Verify the account shown in YouTube’s profile menu.
- Test while signed out or in a private window.
- Test another Google account where appropriate.
- Check whether Restricted Mode is enabled.
- Consider whether a work, school, family, or managed account applies restrictions.
- Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily and test again.
Age-restricted videos may require sign-in and age eligibility. A video can also be unavailable in a country because of licensing or creator settings. Do not bypass school, workplace, parental, age, or regional restrictions. YouTube warns that VPN or proxy use can interfere with Premium country verification, and misrepresenting a subscription country can affect a Premium subscription.
Downloads and offline playback
YouTube downloads are not available to every user, device, account, plan, location, or video. If downloads fail:

- Update the YouTube app.
- Confirm that the account with the relevant download entitlement is active.
- Check storage space.
- Use a stable connection.
- Check whether the download has expired.
- Delete and re-download the video.
- Confirm that the video is eligible for offline viewing.

DNS, VPN, antivirus, and network filtering
Only investigate these settings after simpler tests. A VPN can help identify an ISP-routing or location-specific problem, but it may slow playback and trigger Premium country-verification issues. Changing DNS can help with name-resolution or filtering problems, but it may affect privacy, parental controls, or network policies.
On Windows, an optional diagnostic command is ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt. It clears the local DNS resolver cache; it does not repair an outage and is not a universal YouTube fix. YouTube recommends checking DNS settings if third-party software has changed them, but changing DNS should not be your first step.
When nothing works
Stop changing settings and record:
- The exact error message.
- The device, operating system, and YouTube app or browser.
- Whether the failure affects one video or every video.
- Whether another browser, device, or network works.
- Whether you were signed in, using a VPN, or using extensions.
Then use YouTube’s profile menu and choose Help and feedback to report the problem, as described in YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance. For a clearly service-wide failure, waiting is often the correct fix. For subscription-specific issues, use the relevant official account or purchase-support route.
