YouTube Music’s playlist-voting feature is about ranking songs or videos inside a playlist—not giving the playlist itself a public upvote. YouTube says signed-in users can vote on individual items, and those votes can influence their order. The feature was first spotted in development in 2024; YouTube’s current help documentation describes it as available in supported playlist contexts.
What the 2024 report found
On June 11, 2024, Android Headlines reported source-code strings related to playlist voting in YouTube Music for Android version 7.05.52. One string suggested an owner could choose whether voting was open to everyone, limited to playlist collaborators, or turned off. That discovery showed Google appeared to be preparing the feature; it did not establish a launch date or prove how the final controls would work. Android Headlines’ original report

The report speculated that votes might help gauge a playlist’s popularity or affect discovery. YouTube’s official documentation confirms neither outcome. The version number belongs to that 2024 discovery and is not a current minimum-version requirement.
What playlist voting does now
YouTube’s help page describes ranked voting on individual videos or songs in a playlist. Signed-in users can upvote or downvote an item; voting is anonymous, and each user can cast one vote per item. Votes can influence the order of playlist entries. YouTube’s voting and collaboration guidance
#1 Best Overall
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
This is different from liking or saving a playlist. The documentation does not establish a public score for the playlist, nor does it say that votes improve a playlist’s position in search or recommendations.
How to enable or change voting
YouTube’s documented route is:
- Open the You tab.
- Find the playlist and select More.
- Select Edit.
- Under Voting, choose Everyone, Collaborators only, or Off.
- Select Save.
Labels and availability can vary across platforms, accounts, and rollouts, so not every user will necessarily see this control in the same place. YouTube says collaborative playlists have voting on by default, although it may disable voting for some playlists for safety reasons.

Choose who can vote
| Setting | Who can vote | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone | Any signed-in YouTube account holder | A public, open playlist where broad participation is wanted |
| Collaborators only | People invited to collaborate | A group playlist where voting should stay among participants |
| Off | No one | When the owner wants to keep playlist order under direct control |
Voting is anonymous, so participants should not expect to see who supported or opposed a particular track. The published guidance also does not explain the ranking formula, tie-breaking, update timing, or whether an owner can override the order produced by votes.
Voting is not the same as collaboration
Voting lets someone express a preference about the order of existing items. Collaboration is broader: invited collaborators can share, sort, add to, and edit a playlist, according to YouTube Music’s guidance. Being allowed to vote does not by itself grant permission to add or remove songs. YouTube Music’s playlist and collaboration guidance

Collaboration invitations may require a playlist to be shareable; a private playlist may need to be made public or unlisted first. The help page is specific to Android, and controls can differ between YouTube Music and the main YouTube app.
Why the voting option may be missing or unclear
- The playlist may not be eligible: Voting is documented for collaborative playlist contexts, not guaranteed for every playlist.
- The playlist may not be shareable: Check its privacy and collaboration settings if you are trying to invite participants.
- YouTube may restrict it: The company says voting can be disabled on some playlists for safety reasons, including protections involving minors.
- The interface may differ: The documented menu path may not match every platform or account.
- A vote may not visibly reorder an item right away: YouTube has not published how quickly order changes occur or how votes are translated into ranking.
What owners should consider before opening a playlist
For a party, workout, or community playlist, voting can let listeners push preferred tracks higher without necessarily giving all voters editing powers. Restricting votes to collaborators offers a smaller group more control; turning voting off preserves owner-led ordering.

- Give the gift of an Audible-branded Amazon gift card! Recipients can redeem it for subscriptions or choose from our selection of thousands of captivating audiobooks, podcasts, and Audible Originals through Amazon.com or Audible.com. - Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Open voting also has trade-offs: familiar songs may crowd out less-known selections, and anonymous voting makes it harder to understand why an item moved. YouTube’s playlist-discovery documentation mentions machine learning, social signals, signals from other Google products and services, and human input, but it does not identify playlist votes as a discovery or recommendation signal.
