If OBS stays at “Connecting” when you start a YouTube Live stream, the status alone does not identify the cause. Check the selected YouTube stream and key first, then OBS’s encoder and network settings, your outbound upload capacity, and local software or network equipment—in that order. This guide covers OBS stuck on connecting to YouTube and OBS failing to connect to YouTube Live without assuming one setting will fix every case.
1. Confirm the YouTube stream and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm that the intended stream is selected. The stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, refresh the key. In Live Control Room, copy a new stream key and update the matching field in OBS. A channel owner or manager can reset the key. Resetting it without updating OBS leaves the encoder using the old credential. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Keep the key private. Treat it as a stream credential; do not post it in screenshots, logs, or public messages.
If you sign in to YouTube through third-party software rather than entering a stream key and receive a startup error, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team. Compatibility may require an update.
2. Check what OBS is encoding
Update OBS to the latest version, then inspect the picture and audio in OBS’s preview and check YouTube’s live dashboard for encoder errors. YouTube recommends checking encoder output and CPU load; a local recording can also help you determine whether the problem is already present before the feed reaches YouTube. If local output is poor, investigate the source or encoding before changing your internet connection. If it looks healthy, continue to the outbound connection checks. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Encoding performance and network connection are separate problems. A rendering or encoding overload can affect the feed even when the network path is sound; OBS has a separate guide for diagnosing those performance issues: OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Review OBS’s network settings
OBS’s connection guide recommends testing a different ingest server and reducing video bitrate when the stable upload capacity cannot support the current setting. Its guidance also covers binding and IP family options. Change one setting at a time and test again so you can tell which change mattered. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Server: Try another available ingest server.
- Video bitrate: Lower it if your measured, stable upload capacity cannot sustain the current total stream bitrate. A lower bitrate may reduce picture quality.
- Bind to IP: Leave it at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- IP Family: OBS suggests testing IPv4 Only; if that makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
- Windows-only options: OBS also lists network optimizations and TCP pacing. Their availability depends on your operating system and OBS setup.
For OBS’s general dropped-frame troubleshooting, its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting-point heuristic. It is not a YouTube-specific guaranteed setting or a cure for a wrong stream key. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can help reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it is a fallback: the bitrate, and potentially the picture quality, can fall while congestion continues.

4. Measure outbound upload capacity
Test upload speed rather than relying on download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends spare capacity. Its Streaming tips page states: “That’s primary + backup + 20% is recommended.” The 20% is YouTube Help’s recommended upload headroom; the page does not show a publication year. It is a service recommendation, not a study result or a measure of how often OBS fails to connect. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting; YouTube streaming tips.
- Run an internet speed test and note the upload result.
- Add the bitrate of the primary stream and any backup feed you are sending.
- Allow the recommended 20% margin above that total, and make sure the connection can sustain it rather than only reaching it briefly.
- If upload is inconsistent or too low, choose settings that the connection can support reliably and monitor YouTube’s stream health and dashboard messages. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider (ISP) if the connection has problems.

5. Isolate software and local-network problems
Test software that can interfere with OBS
OBS identifies firewall or antivirus interference, VPN instability, network-prioritizing utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Test suspected software one at a time rather than disabling several protections at once. If disabling security software makes OBS connect, re-enable it and create an appropriate OBS exception. Get network drivers from the device or computer manufacturer. OBS connection troubleshooting.
Test the wired connection and network equipment
OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If practical, test over Ethernet; a cable is worth checking or replacing only if that test or other evidence points to a cable fault. Restarting the modem and router is another diagnostic step. Possible hardware faults include the modem, router, network cable, network card, switch, or extender. OBS advises consulting your ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment.

6. Escalate with evidence
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, OBS recommends contacting your ISP and describing the problem in detail. YouTube also advises reporting continuing live-stream problems. When asking for help, gather the details that distinguish a setup issue from an encoder or connection failure:
- The exact OBS status or error and the relevant OBS log.
- Whether the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Whether the local OBS output looks and sounds healthy.
- Your upload-test result, the primary and backup bitrates, and whether the connection is wired or Wi-Fi.
- Which troubleshooting changes you tried and what happened after each one.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a live YouTube ingest outage or a single definitive cause for OBS being stuck at “Connecting.” Treat the symptom as a starting point for diagnosis, not proof that a particular setting, device, or service is at fault.
