If a YouTube broadcast stops showing your video when a clip reaches its end, enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties. Loop is off by default. It repeats the file; it does not by itself control whether OBS stays connected to YouTube.
Loop one media file in OBS
- In OBS, find the clip’s Media Source in the Sources list. If you have not added it yet, add a Media Source and choose the file.
- Open the source properties by double-clicking the source or selecting it and choosing Properties.
- Turn on Loop, then apply the change. OBS describes this setting as determining whether the file plays again after playback completes; its documented default is off. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Leave the source visible in the active scene and check that playback returns to the beginning when it reaches the end.
OBS Media Source supports common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, as well as audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. OBS lists the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Media Sources documentation
Do not confuse Loop with the other playback controls
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source when the file completes. It does not make the file repeat.
- Restart playback when source becomes active starts the file over when the source becomes active—for example, when it is visible in the current scene. It is not the end-of-file loop setting.
- Close file when inactive unloads the media file when the source is hidden or absent from the current scene, which can save memory. OBS notes that showing the source again may cause a short reload delay.
These settings are documented separately from Loop in OBS’s Media Sources guide.
For a playlist, loop the playlist
If you want several clips to rotate, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That option is on by default. VLC Video relies on VLC libraries, so install VLC first; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. For a single clip, the built-in Media Source and its Loop setting are the simpler choice. If the YouTube broadcast ends too
A clip reaching its end and a YouTube live stream ending are different events. OBS’s Loop setting governs playback of the media file. YouTube receives the broadcast from OBS as the encoder; YouTube’s guidance says to stop sending encoder content to end a stream. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
If the file now repeats but the broadcast still ends, check whether OBS is still connected and streaming after the clip’s endpoint. Then review YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop controls: when enabled, they allow the encoder to start or stop the stream. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions also describe ending the stream in YouTube and stopping encoder output. If those checks do not explain the interruption, the cause cannot be determined from the symptom alone; it depends on the scene setup, OBS logs, and stream settings. Avoid changing unrelated media playback options until you have confirmed whether the source or the broadcast is stopping.
