For the stream you’re watching, open the player’s Settings → Quality → Advanced menu and choose the highest resolution that plays smoothly, if Advanced is available. If it buffers, step down one resolution or switch to Auto. To set a general preference, open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences and choose how YouTube should handle mobile networks.
Change the quality for the current live stream

Tap the live stream to show the player controls, then tap Settings → Quality. Labels and menu availability can vary by device, app version, and locale.

If you see Advanced, open it and select the highest available resolution that plays reliably. Not every stream or device offers manual resolutions.

If the picture becomes sharper but starts buffering, lower the resolution one step or choose Auto. A higher setting can use more data and buffer more often.

YouTube Help says, “To give you the best viewing experience, YouTube changes the quality of your video stream based on your viewing conditions.” Connection speed is one factor; player or screen size, the original video quality, and browser support can also affect playback. YouTube Help: Change the quality of your video.
Set YouTube’s default quality behavior on mobile data

Tap your profile picture.

Open Settings → Video quality preferences.

Choose a preference for Mobile networks. You can set a separate preference for Wi-Fi.

These preferences influence playback; they cannot create detail that is missing from the broadcaster’s incoming stream. See YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality for the documented choices. The exact menu may differ across devices, app versions, and locales.

Compare mobile data with Wi-Fi
Try the same stream on Wi-Fi, or retry from a place where mobile reception is stronger. If it improves, that points to a difference in connection conditions, but it does not prove reception is the only cause: YouTube also considers factors such as the source quality and player or screen size.

Check whether the problem affects other videos
If other videos look sharp but one live stream remains blocky, the broadcaster’s incoming stream quality may be limiting what viewers receive. That is a likely explanation, not a diagnosis of a particular broadcast. A viewer cannot change the broadcaster’s encoder settings.
Compare the app and browser
If the issue appears only in the YouTube app or a particular browser, compare playback on another supported route. YouTube lists browser support among the factors that can affect quality; a difference is a clue, not proof that the browser is at fault.
For broadcasters: viewer settings are not encoder settings
If you control the broadcast, changing your own phone’s playback quality will not fix a low-quality stream for everyone. YouTube advises streamers to choose a quality their internet connection can maintain, test upload bitrate and the stream before going live, and monitor stream health. Its H.264 examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are creator-side encoder recommendations, not required download speeds for viewers. YouTube also says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
