YouTube Live Stream Keyframe Interval: Why YouTube Recommends 2 Seconds

Use a two-second keyframe interval for YouTube live encoder streams. Here is how it translates to frames, why closed GOP matters, and what the recommendation does—and does not—mean.

Set your live encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 frames per second (fps), two seconds is 60 frames. YouTube’s guidance explains why the interval matters operationally, but does not publish an engineering derivation for why it chose exactly two seconds.

What keyframe interval should you use?

Use a two-second keyframe frequency for a YouTube live encoder stream, and keep it at or below four seconds. That is YouTube’s current recommendation for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance also lists supported video formats and other encoding recommendations.

A keyframe interval is a duration, but many encoders express it as a number of frames. Convert the two-second interval using your stream’s frame rate:

Frame rate Frames in a 2-second interval
30 fps 60 frames
60 fps 120 frames

YouTube gives the 30 fps example as 60 frames and says to adjust the keyframe frequency when the frame rate changes. The 60 fps figure is the equivalent calculation: 60 frames per second Ă— 2 seconds. If your encoder offers the interval in seconds rather than frames, enter two seconds directly.

Why does YouTube recommend two seconds?

YouTube’s public help pages do not explain why it selected exactly two seconds rather than another interval. The supported practical explanation is that keyframes help YouTube process the incoming stream: YouTube automatically transcodes live video into formats for viewers’ different devices and network conditions, and its troubleshooting guidance says keyframes arriving too infrequently can cause buffering.

YouTube also says its pipeline requires a closed GOP (group of pictures) for optimal transcoding. Check that your encoder is set to closed GOP if it exposes that option. These requirements explain why keyframe timing and GOP structure matter to the ingest and transcoding process; they do not establish that two seconds is a uniquely optimal interval or the only setting that can work.

Why not make the interval as short as possible?

More frequent keyframes are not automatically better. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance warns that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality. Follow the recommended two-second interval rather than shortening it without a specific reason, and avoid exceeding YouTube’s four-second ceiling.

For troubleshooting, YouTube’s live streaming error messages page describes problems involving keyframe frequency and GOP size, including the closed-GOP requirement. Use its advice alongside your encoder’s own controls, since menu names and options vary by software and device.

Does a two-second keyframe interval mean two-second latency?

No. Keyframe interval and end-to-end live latency describe different things. YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and playback for viewers. Its live stream settings guidance notes that lowering latency can increase playback buffering. The cited guidance does not say that setting a two-second keyframe interval guarantees two-second latency.

Check these settings when configuring your encoder

  • Keyframe frequency: Set it to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame-count equivalent: At 30 fps, use 60 frames per interval; at 60 fps, use 120 frames. Recalculate if you change frame rate.
  • GOP structure: Choose closed GOP if your encoder provides an open/closed option.
  • Image quality: Do not assume a smaller GOP is better; YouTube warns that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality.

These are encoder settings, not a reason to buy a particular camera or hardware encoder. YouTube describes both software and standalone hardware encoders in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
