YouTube Live Stream Goes Offline When a VPN Reconnects: OBS Routing Fixes

Check OBS’s Bind to IP setting, test the stream with the VPN temporarily disabled, and narrow down whether the route or ingest connection is failing.

If your YouTube live stream goes offline just as a VPN reconnects, start by checking OBS’s network binding and then test the stream briefly with the VPN disabled. OBS identifies VPN software as a possible cause of an unstable connection to the streaming server, but the timing alone does not prove which VPN setting is responsible.

Why does my YouTube stream disconnect when my VPN reconnects?

OBS sends the stream from your computer to YouTube’s ingest service; OBS does not relay it through its own servers. When a VPN reconnects, the network route used by the streaming connection may become unstable. OBS notes that dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, and enough dropped frames can result in disconnection. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says VPN software may make the connection to the streaming server unstable.

A stream that also disconnects with the VPN off may have a different cause, such as an unstable connection to the ingest service or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. OBS says its software itself is extremely unlikely to be the cause of dropped frames.

Fix the OBS and VPN connection in a controlled order

  1. Note what OBS reports. Record whether OBS shows dropped frames, a disconnection, or both, and whether the event starts immediately after the VPN reconnects. This pattern helps distinguish a route interruption from a problem that occurs continuously.
  2. Set OBS network binding to Default. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Set Bind to IP to Default, then apply the change. This is the first network setting OBS recommends checking in its connection troubleshooting guide.
  3. Temporarily disable the VPN and test. Stream again without the VPN. If the connection is stable in this test but fails when the VPN is active or reconnects, the VPN path is implicated. That result does not identify a particular VPN option as the fix.
  4. If the problem follows the VPN, inspect that client’s routing options. Look for its documented split-tunneling or reconnect behavior for your operating system and client version. Consider whether OBS should use a stable route while the VPN remains active for other traffic, and weigh that against your privacy and security requirements. Exact settings differ, so do not apply a generic routing recipe without confirming how your VPN handles it.
  5. If it still fails with the VPN off, investigate the ingest connection and bitrate. Check whether your connection can sustain the bitrate configured in OBS and whether it can maintain a stable path to YouTube’s ingest service. A VPN change is not the answer if the same disconnections continue on the ordinary connection.

Optional OBS network settings and bitrate adjustments

On Windows, OBS offers Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as optional troubleshooting settings. OBS describes them as options some users report help; they are not a guaranteed fix for a route change during VPN reconnection. Test changes one at a time so you can tell whether they alter the failure pattern.

OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower the bitrate during congestion, potentially reducing dropped frames. It does not repair the underlying connection problem, and the stream’s video quality falls when the bitrate is reduced. Treat it as a compromise for congestion rather than a VPN routing fix.

Should you change YouTube’s ingest protocol?

YouTube supports multiple ingestion protocols, including RTMPS, and OBS lists YouTube RTMPS endpoints. That establishes that protocol choices exist; it does not show that switching protocol or changing between primary and backup endpoints will preserve a stream through a VPN route interruption. Try a protocol change only as a separate diagnostic after checking the network binding and VPN connection, not as a presumed fix for reconnect behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you use OBS because you need a prerecorded video to stay live on YouTube, a cloud option avoids relying on a home computer and its VPN route. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube: upload it, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
