Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA green YouTube Live picture does not point to one specific FFmpeg setting. Find the first place the picture turns green—source preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview, or YouTube playback—then inspect the pixel-format and color-conversion path at that stage. Changing -pix_fmt yuv420p may help in some pipelines, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Find where the picture first turns green
Compare the same video at each stage of the chain: source, FFmpeg output saved locally, YouTube Live Control Room preview, and the resulting YouTube playback. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says poor-looking live video can originate in the audio or video sources routed to the encoder, so check upstream before changing encoder options (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
- Check the source preview. Inspect the camera, capture device, decoder output, or other input before FFmpeg processes it. If it is already green, an output H.264 option is unlikely to repair the source.
- Record locally through the same FFmpeg pipeline. Keep the input and filter graph identical to the live command. If the local file is green, investigate the input, filters, pixel-format conversion, and encoder path. If it is clean but the Live Control Room preview is green, turn attention to the emitted stream and ingest path. This comparison narrows the search; it does not by itself identify a particular fault.
- Compare Live Control Room with YouTube playback. A difference between those views can help locate whether the issue is in the stream arriving at YouTube or in subsequent playback. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health during it (YouTube live stream troubleshooting).
Change one variable at a time and save a known-good local sample. That makes it easier to tell whether a change actually altered the color path.
Check FFmpeg’s actual pixel-format and encoder path
Do not assume every FFmpeg installation has the same encoder capabilities. In the startup and output logs, check which video stream is selected, the decoder’s output pixel format, each filter’s input and output formats, and the encoder’s selected format. Consult the documentation for the installed build and inspect its configuration: supported pixel formats for the libx264 wrapper can depend on how FFmpeg was built (FFmpeg libx264 documentation).

Ordinary libx264 and libx264rgb are not interchangeable without regard to the rest of the pipeline. The latter accepts packed RGB input; verify that the chosen encoder supports the formats FFmpeg is passing to it. A format conversion may occur between decoder, filters, and encoder, so examine that whole chain rather than just the final command-line option.
Inspect conversion, range, and color metadata
Review the filter graph for RGB-to-YUV or YUV-to-YUV conversion, scaling, and any explicit range or color-space handling. Check whether the color information entering a filter matches what it expects and what the output is tagged as. A mismatch can make colors look wrong even when the stream is technically decodable.

An FFmpeg-user post from 2013 described a subtle green tint in one RGB/YUV conversion workflow, particularly involving conversion to yuv420p and scaling (FFmpeg-user report, February 2013). That is a historical report about one workflow, not evidence that yuv420p generally causes green video. Do not treat setting or removing it as a universal cure.
Check YouTube ingest settings separately from color
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR (10-bit HDR) (YouTube live encoder settings).

These are ingest compatibility and quality recommendations, not a green-screen diagnosis. Check them against your stream, but do not assume that violating one of them explains the color symptom.
Choose bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate
Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending; do not copy a value from an unrelated command example. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum for 1080p60 (YouTube live encoder settings). These figures address stream quality and reliability, not a uniquely green-image failure. Available upload bandwidth also constrains the resolution and frame rate you can send reliably.

Run a controlled test before the event
- Use a short test with representative movement and audio, following YouTube’s recommendation to test before going live.
- Save a local recording from the same input and filter graph used for the stream.
- Check the local file and Live Control Room preview for color, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- If the picture is wrong, change one item at a time—such as a conversion or color setting—and repeat the comparison. Keep the command and log for each test.
For a precise diagnosis, collect the exact FFmpeg command and relevant startup/output log, FFmpeg version and build configuration, source codec and pixel format, filter graph, and a local recording from that pipeline. Note exactly where the green image appears. Without those details, naming one failing codec setting would be guesswork.
Common green-video symptoms and next checks
- Green before FFmpeg: Check the camera, capture device, source connection, and decoder output before changing the output encoder.
- Green in the local recording and stream: Trace the input, filter graph, pixel-format negotiation, and encoder output in the logs.
- Local file is clean but Live Control Room is green: Check the emitted stream’s format and color handling, then compare it with YouTube’s ingest recommendations.
- Color shifts after scaling or conversion: Inspect the conversion path, input/output formats, range, and color-space handling. Treat the 2013 conversion report as a clue for one workflow, not a general diagnosis.
- FFmpeg rejects a format or selects an unexpected one: Verify the installed build’s encoder support and the formats negotiated across the filters; do not assume all builds support the same options.
- The stream is stable but color remains wrong: Correct color and pixel-format handling independently of bitrate or keyframe changes, which address different aspects of ingest and stream quality.
