YouTube Live Stream Dropping Frames? Causes and Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube live stream is dropping frames, first check which OBS counter is rising. Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or an unsustainable bitrate; Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag point to local computer workload. The right fix depends on that distinction.

Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”

Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming and watch the individual counters. The labels describe different failure points, so don’t treat every rise as a network problem.

OBS counter What it indicates Where to investigate
Dropped Frames (Network) The connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A large number of drops can disconnect the stream. Upload bandwidth, network stability, shared connection use, bitrate and possible software or hardware interference.
Frames missed due to rendering lag OBS is having trouble rendering or compositing frames. GPU workload, demanding scenes, games or other applications.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag The computer is struggling to encode the output in time. Encoder errors, CPU load, encoding workload and available system resources.

OBS Project explains that network-dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and its Stats window documentation.

Fix network-dropped frames

Check upload capacity under realistic conditions

A fast download test does not prove that your upload can carry a live stream reliably. Test outbound bandwidth, preferably when your connection is being used as it will be during the event. Account for other people and devices sharing the network, and for a backup stream if you are sending one.

YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve; the total bitrate of all streams must fit within the available upload capacity. In YouTube’s words, “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube Help’s streaming tips.

Match bitrate to the stream you can actually sustain

Compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The official table lists recommended H.264 bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain a stream at that rate. The YouTube page and its locale variants may present different ranges, so consult the current YouTube encoder-settings table for your chosen mode.

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Use the official table for the current codec- and mode-specific settings; YouTube may revise it.

Lower the demand if the connection falls short

If upload capacity cannot support your selected output, lower the bitrate. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate. YouTube’s error guidance recommends lowering resolution when the available bandwidth cannot support the bitrate required for the selected resolution. The trade-off is lower delivered quality, but a stable lower-quality stream is preferable to persistent interruption.

OBS offers dynamic bitrate adjustment, which can lower bitrate when the connection is congested. It may help keep a stream connected, but it reduces quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

Investigate persistent connection trouble

If the bitrate is reasonable for your upload and network drops continue, follow OBS’s network troubleshooting steps. OBS identifies VPN and security software interference as possible causes and advises contacting your internet service provider if its troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Treat changes to VPN, security software, firewall rules or other advanced network settings as controlled diagnostic tests—not guaranteed fixes. Change one relevant setting at a time and check whether the network counter improves.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

Check the local output before changing the network

If rendering-lag or encoding-lag counters rise while the network counter remains stable, focus on the computer. Check OBS’s encoder errors and system load. YouTube also recommends checking the local recording: if the archive is choppy too, that is evidence the problem may be in rendering or encoding rather than delivery to YouTube. See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.

Reduce rendering pressure

OBS must render and composite scenes, and a GPU that is busy with a game or other demanding work may not have enough resources left for OBS. Try lowering game graphics settings or frame rate, and close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources. Simplifying scene or output demands may also help. Check the rendering counter again after each change.

Reduce encoding pressure

When Skipped frames due to encoding lag is the counter climbing, inspect encoder errors, CPU load and overall system resources. Reduce workload or output demands as appropriate, then repeat the test. Don’t buy new hardware as the first response: confirm that the local encoding counter is the problem before considering a hardware change.

OBS suggests running the application as administrator as a quick diagnostic step for some GPU-overload cases on Windows. It is not a universal fix. More detail is in OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Test the fix before the next stream

  1. Recreate the real workload. Before the event, test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, rather than relying on an idle scene.
  2. Check the YouTube preview. Use the Live Control Room preview and read its stream-health messages.
  3. Change one relevant variable. For example, adjust bitrate for network drops or reduce local workload for rendering or encoding lag. This makes it easier to see which change affected the relevant counter.
  4. Monitor the live event. Keep an eye on OBS statistics and YouTube stream health during the broadcast so you can respond if the symptoms return.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See its encoder settings and live-streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. It supports whatever quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
