A PC restarting after a power fluctuation does not guarantee that its YouTube live stream will resume. Recovery depends on several steps working: power must return, the PC must boot, the encoder must reconnect and send video, and YouTube must receive it. Check each stage in order, then verify the event in YouTube Studio before assuming you are live again.
What automatic recovery depends on
There is no single setting shown here that guarantees recovery from a power interruption. The full chain is:
- Power and firmware: mains power returns, and the PC is configured to start after AC power is restored.
- Windows and the encoder: Windows loads and the streaming software opens or is restarted with the right scene and sources.
- YouTube ingestion: the encoder reconnects using the stream URL and key, and YouTube receives the feed.
A successful reboot confirms only the first part of that chain. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to send video; if it stops sending, the stream can end. Its auto-start and auto-stop options control starting or stopping from the encoder, but are not a promise that a previous session will automatically recover after a PC reboot. Recover the stream, step by step
1. Let power and internet settle
Wait until power is stable before restarting or troubleshooting the stream. If the router or modem also lost power, allow it to reconnect and confirm the PC has a working internet connection. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream and recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom. 2. Check whether the PC came back on
If the PC remains off after power returns, check the motherboard or computer manual for a firmware option such as “Restore on AC Power Loss.” Depending on the model, it may offer settings such as Power On or Last State. Names, availability, defaults and behavior vary; do not assume your PC has the same setting as another brand or model.
For example, an MSI motherboard manual from 2019 documents “Restore after AC Power Loss” and shows Power Off as the default. That is an example for that manual, not a universal PC default. 3. Inspect the encoder
Once Windows is running, open your encoder and check that the intended scene, video, audio and other sources are available. Confirm it is using the correct YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly. If the encoder reports a start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the key and copying the current one into the encoder if needed. The sources do not establish one universal Windows autologin or encoder auto-launch procedure: those details depend on your Windows setup and streaming software. If you configure startup automation, test it with your own PC and encoder rather than assuming a reboot will restore the broadcast unattended.

4. Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the preview and stream health. Wait for video and audio to appear before telling viewers the broadcast is back. A running encoder window by itself does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
5. Check the event before starting again
If the original stream ended, inspect its state in Studio before starting another broadcast. Confirm whether the existing event is still usable and avoid accidentally confusing viewers with a second stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow distinguishes sending the feed from managing the event; it does not promise that reconnecting restores the same event in every circumstance. Prevent a repeat and test recovery safely
Test the full chain before an important broadcast
YouTube recommends configuring the encoder in advance, starting ahead of the event, checking the preview, verifying that the stream is accessible, and monitoring audio and video. For a private rehearsal, use an unlisted or private test where appropriate. Test what happens if the primary encoder stops or its Ethernet connection is disconnected, then confirm how the event appears in Studio and whether the archive is visible as expected. Consider backup power, with realistic expectations
A UPS can provide temporary power to equipment connected to it, but it does not by itself restart Windows, launch the encoder or confirm YouTube has resumed receiving video. Before choosing one, establish the load and runtime needed for the PC and consider whether the router and modem also need backup power. No particular model or runtime is established here.
