If YouTube removed your Hindi-song livestream and issued a copyright strike, first confirm that the notice says copyright removal rather than a Content ID claim. A Content ID claim is handled through a different process; a counter notification is a legal request that may be appropriate only if you genuinely believe the removal was mistaken, the material was misidentified, or a copyright exception plausibly applies. You can instead seek a retraction or complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire. None of these routes guarantees a particular result.
First, confirm whether it was a claim or a strike
Open YouTube Studio and read the exact notice, then check the email YouTube sent about the enforcement. Identify whether the notice describes a Content ID claim, a copyright removal request and strike, or a Community Guidelines issue. The distinction determines what response is available.
- Content ID claim: YouTube says a claim can monetize, track, or block a video. If you believe a claim is wrong, the relevant process is a claim appeal—not a counter notification. See YouTube’s guidance on appealing a copyright claim.
- Copyright removal request and strike: A removal request is a legal request that can remove content and apply a copyright strike. A counter notification may be available after content is removed through this process. See About Copyright Removal Requests.
- Community Guidelines strike: This is a different type of enforcement. Follow the notice’s instructions rather than treating it as a copyright dispute.
For a livestream, check whether YouTube interrupted it after detecting third-party content, whether a formal removal followed, and whether the notice says your live-streaming access is restricted. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If an active stream is removed for copyright, the channel can receive a strike and live-stream access may be restricted for seven days. Document the notice and the song before responding
Before appealing, contacting anyone, or filing a legal request, save the notice and write down what YouTube says happened. You need to understand what was identified and what rights or permission you can actually show.

- Record the claimant’s identity, the exact song and recording named, the affected stream segment, and the action YouTube took.
- Preserve any licence, written permission, performance agreement, or correspondence that could cover the relevant use.
- Read the permission carefully: check its territory, platform, public-performance or communication rights, live-stream terms, and any terms governing an archived recording. Permission for one use does not necessarily cover another.
- If the work was performed live, distinguish the musical or literary composition from any sound recording used in the stream. More than one work or right may be involved; the claimant’s identity alone does not establish who owns every relevant right.
YouTube warns that even licensed third-party material can interrupt a live stream unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A licence may therefore matter to whether you had permission, but it does not guarantee that YouTube’s live-stream matching system will let a broadcast continue uninterrupted.
Giving the artist credit, using only a short excerpt, buying a consumer music subscription, or adding “no copyright intended” does not by itself establish permission to livestream a song. Do not claim ownership, invent a licence, or describe a right you cannot support.

Choose the response that fits the notice and your evidence

Counter notification: use it only for a supportable dispute
YouTube describes a counter notification as “a legal request to reinstate content that was removed due to a copyright removal request.” It is not another name for a Content ID claim appeal. YouTube says the original uploader should submit it, though an authorized representative such as an attorney may do so for the uploader. Review YouTube’s counter-notification instructions and the current instructions shown in your account before submitting.
- Confirm that the content was removed following a copyright removal request, rather than merely claimed through Content ID.
- Assess whether you can truthfully explain why the removal was mistaken, involved misidentification, or should be covered by a copyright exception. A disagreement with the claimant, credit to the artist, or a short excerpt is not on its own a legal basis.
- Read the required information and disclosure terms before filing. YouTube shares the counter notification with the claimant. False information or misuse can have account or legal consequences.
- Submit using the method and current instructions available through YouTube Help or Studio. For videos, YouTube lists submission in Studio and by email, fax, or mail; do not assume every method or interface label is available for every case.
After YouTube forwards a counter notification, the claimant has 10 US working days to provide evidence of legal action, according to YouTube’s removal-request guidance. If legal action is pending, the content remains removed. If YouTube does not receive evidence of legal action within that period, it says the content is restored and the strike removed. This is a stated process, not a prediction that a particular counter notification will succeed.

Request a retraction from the claimant
You can use the claimant information in Studio to contact the person who submitted the removal request and ask for a retraction. Keep the message factual: identify the notice and affected stream, explain the permission or other relevant evidence you have, and make a clear request. Retraction depends on the claimant’s cooperation; it is not an appeal decision YouTube can promise in advance.
Complete Copyright School and wait for strike expiry
YouTube says a copyright strike may expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and meet its strike conditions. The removal and strike are separate outcomes: expiry does not automatically bring the deleted or removed stream back. YouTube also warns that three copyright strikes within 90 days may subject a channel and associated channels to termination. Check all active strikes and their dates in Studio, and read the current YouTube strike guidance.

Do not confuse a scheduled-removal window with the counter-notice deadline
If YouTube sent a scheduled-removal notice before taking content down, its guidance describes a seven-day window to act before removal and a strike. Read the specific notice promptly: once removal has taken effect, the available choices are different, and deleting already-removed content does not clear the strike. The seven-day scheduled-removal window is not the same as the possible seven-day live-streaming restriction after an active stream is removed, and neither is the claimant’s 10-US-working-day response period after a counter notification is forwarded.
What Indian copyright law does—and does not—settle
The Government of India’s India Code record identifies the Copyright Act, 1957 as Central Act 14 of 1957, enacted on 4 June 1957 and enforced from 21 January 1958. The Act’s Section 51 addresses infringement where a person, without a licence or contrary to its conditions, exercises an exclusive right conferred on the copyright owner. Section 52(1)(a) provides for fair dealing with a work (other than a computer program) for specified purposes, including private or personal use, criticism or review, and reporting current events. The Act’s record is available from India Code.

Those provisions do not create blanket permission to play a Hindi song in a livestream. Whether a particular use fits a listed purpose depends on its facts and the rights involved; a commentary or review stream, performance, or short excerpt is not automatically exempt. The available information cannot establish who owns a specific song or recording, whether your licence covers the stream, or how a particular dispute would be decided. If you are considering a counter notification, have a disputed licence, or face multiple active strikes, consult a qualified Indian copyright lawyer before making a legal representation.
Reduce the chance of another interruption on a future stream
Before broadcasting music, confirm that you have permission covering the planned live use and any archived version, and clarify whether the rights owner needs to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Keep the written terms and the claimant’s confirmation. These steps do not guarantee that a stream will avoid a match or takedown, but they make it easier to understand and document what permission you had.
