A falling bitrate in OBS is a symptom, not proof that your internet provider is at fault. First check OBS Stats to see whether frames are being dropped because of the network, rendering lag, or encoding lag. Then compare your upload capacity with your stream’s target bitrate and check the timestamped stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Those clues help you choose the right fix instead of changing settings or buying equipment at random.
1. Identify what is actually falling in OBS
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem during a representative test stream—unlisted if you do not want viewers to see it. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and note the time of each bitrate drop.
- In OBS, open View > Stats.
- Watch the bitrate and the separate counters for Frames missed due to rendering lag, Skipped frames due to encoding lag, and Dropped frames (Network).
- Write down which counter changes and when. A rise in network-dropped frames points toward delivery over the outbound connection; rendering or encoding lag points first toward the computer, scene, or encoder workload.
Do not diagnose from the bitrate graph alone. YouTube also advises checking the encoder and CPU before concluding that the outbound connection is the cause.
2. Check upload capacity under real streaming conditions
Download speed does not tell you whether your connection can sustain a live stream’s outbound bitrate. Run an upload speed test while other people and devices are using the connection as they normally would during a stream. On a shared home or office connection, competing uploads can reduce the capacity available to OBS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as headroom. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee against brief disruptions. Compare your measured upload capacity with the stream’s target bitrate, leaving room for other traffic and variation. If the result is marginal or fluctuates, lower the encoder bitrate first; reduce resolution or frame rate too if needed. There is no single upload-speed threshold that suits every stream.
3. Compare OBS with YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and any timestamped errors. YouTube checks the stream it receives, and its messages can flag a bitrate or format configuration problem. Compare the error times with the OBS Stats values you recorded; viewer playback alone may not reveal where the problem began.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- YouTube reports a configuration or format error: correct the specified encoder setting before treating the issue as a general network failure.
- OBS reports network-dropped frames and YouTube health worsens at the same time: investigate available upload capacity and the outbound network path.
- Rendering or encoding lag rises while YouTube reports no matching ingestion error: investigate the local computer and encoder workload first.
4. Verify that your encoder settings fit the stream
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. The examples below are recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload speeds. Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for your exact mode before changing a setting; the table can change and includes other modes and minimum values too.
| Ingestion mode | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; its stated maximum keyframe interval is four seconds. Make sure resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and keyframe interval are mutually consistent with YouTube’s current recommendations. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the selected target, lower the bitrate and, where necessary, the resolution or frame rate.

5. Separate encoder and computer problems from network problems
Use the evidence from OBS and YouTube to choose what to test next. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance puts the encoder and local output ahead of ISP escalation:
- Make sure the encoder software is current, then inspect its stream output and OBS Stats during the problem.
- Check CPU load and whether a local recording shows audio or video problems. Rising encoding or rendering lag calls for reducing local workload or adjusting the encoder and scene—not replacing a router without evidence.
- If the local output looks healthy but OBS reports network-dropped frames, compare upload tests under the same network load as the stream.
- If an outbound-connection test identifies a connection issue, contact your internet service provider and provide the test results and timestamps. YouTube’s guidance is: “If you find issues with your internet connection: Contact your internet service provider to troubleshoot.”
6. Test the local network path if the indicators point to it
If network evidence points to the connection between the computer and internet service, compare a known-good wired Ethernet test with your usual setup, if feasible. A wired test removes avoidable Wi-Fi variability and helps isolate the local wireless path; it does not prove that the ISP or router is at fault. A Cat 6 cable is one possible known-good cable for this check, not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed fix.

- If both wired and wireless tests show poor or unstable upload, share those timestamps and results with your ISP.
Quick fixes by observed symptom
| What you observe | First intervention to test | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames; upload capacity is marginal | Lower the stream bitrate; reduce resolution or frame rate if necessary. | Whether network-dropped frames and YouTube health improve under the same network load. |
| Network-dropped frames; other devices are uploading | Reduce competing network use during the test. | Upload capacity and OBS/YouTube indicators before and during the change. |
| Network-dropped frames; Wi-Fi is unstable | Compare with a known-good wired Ethernet connection. | Whether the problem follows the wireless path or persists when wired. |
| Rendering or encoding lag rises | Investigate computer load, the scene, and encoder workload. | Whether the relevant OBS lag counter falls; do not use a network change as a substitute for this check. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate or format error | Correct the setting named by YouTube and verify the encoder configuration. | Whether the timestamped error clears in Live Control Room. |
| Wired and wireless tests both show poor or unstable upload | Gather test results and timestamps, then contact the ISP. | Whether the provider can identify an outbound service problem. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded documentary recordings rather than a live camera or a live OBS production, StreamNeo is a separate option—not a fix for a bitrate problem in an active OBS stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
