The original Hocus Pocus was released on July 16, 1993, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters and Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vinessa Shaw as its young leads. Here’s where the six performers’ careers went after the film—and who returned for the 2022 sequel. “Now” here means documented career milestones, not a judgment about anyone’s appearance or an unsupported claim about their current work.

The Sanderson Sisters: three careers beyond Salem
Bette Midler as Winifred Sanderson
Midler led the trio as Winifred, whose commanding presence anchors the Sanderson Sisters. Disney’s official cast listing confirms her role in the original, and Disney later announced that she would reprise it in Hocus Pocus 2. The announcement confirms the return to the character, not a broader update on her present-day work. Disney’s film page and Disney’s May 20, 2021 sequel announcement document those credits.
Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson
Parker played Sarah, the youngest Sanderson Sister. She also returned as Sarah in the sequel, according to Disney’s 2021 announcement. That gives her Hocus Pocus story a clear on-screen continuation nearly three decades after the original; it does not establish what projects she is currently working on.

Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson
Najimy played Mary and reprised the role in Hocus Pocus 2. In a Disney News interview published around the sequel’s September 30, 2022 Disney+ debut, she described the film’s generational appeal: “There was something in [the original] film, I think, where the [original] generation shows it to their kids, who shows it to their kids, who shows it to their kids.” That is Najimy’s observation about the film’s audience, not a measured audience statistic. The young leads: Max, Dani, and Allison
Omri Katz as Max Dennison
Katz played Max, whose arrival in Salem sets the story’s events in motion. D23 and Disney’s official film materials identify him in the role. Disney’s announcement of Hocus Pocus 2 named the three Sanderson Sisters as returning; it does not establish a return for Katz or document his current career status. Avoid treating that announcement as proof that he did or did not appear in the sequel.

Thora Birch as Dani Dennison
Birch played Dani, Max’s younger sister. Her role is confirmed in the original cast listings, but the cited sequel announcement does not establish that she returned. The available official material here also does not support a claim about her current projects or status.
Vinessa Shaw as Allison Watts
Shaw played Allison, who joins Max and Dani in confronting the Sanderson Sisters. Disney+ lists Shaw among the original film’s cast. The cited sequel announcement confirms the witches’ return, not Allison’s, and does not establish Shaw’s current work.

What “then and now” can—and cannot—tell you
The clearest documented bridge between the 1993 film and a later milestone is the Sanderson Sisters’ return in Hocus Pocus 2. Disney announced Midler, Parker, and Najimy’s reprises on May 20, 2021; Disney News reported that the sequel debuted on Disney+ on September 30, 2022. Those dated credits are solid career landmarks. They are not a complete 2026 cast update, and the sources cited here do not establish a current project or status for every performer.

Catalog access can vary by region and over time, so check the service in your location for current availability. Disney’s official film page also promotes the movie in 4K Ultra HD; that establishes a format listing, not current retailer stock or a particular edition’s availability.
