Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse one steady frame rate for the live encoder output; don’t try to change it whenever a 24 fps or 30 fps clip begins. For a playlist that includes both, 30 fps is a practical starting point if you want the output to accommodate the 30 fps clips, while 24 fps can suit a workflow that prioritizes 24 fps motion. Neither is a YouTube-mandated choice. Test representative clips and transitions before broadcasting, because YouTube’s guidance does not specify how mixed-rate playlist footage is converted.
Understand which frame rate you are setting
There are three separate frame rates to keep straight:
- Source-file frame rate: the rate at which an individual video was recorded. YouTube’s upload guidance says to encode and upload content at its recorded frame rate; it lists common rates including 24 and 30 fps. That guidance concerns standalone uploads, not live encoder output. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
- Live encoder output: the consistent video signal your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube asks you to specify the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder and says it detects the selected settings. Its live encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Viewer renditions: YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers. That does not mean the live input can change cadence clip by clip without a consistent encoder output.
For a mixed playlist, choose the live output rate once and have the playback and encoding workflow maintain it across clips.
Choose 24 fps or 30 fps for the live output
There is no universally best rate for this mix. Consider which footage matters most, how motion looks when clips are represented at the chosen output cadence, whether your encoder can sustain that output, and the resulting upload bandwidth. YouTube does not prescribe a special mixed-rate playlist mode or declare 24 or 30 fps superior for this use case.

| Output choice | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | A straightforward starting point when the playlist includes 30 fps clips or you want the live output set to 30 fps. | Watch 24 fps footage for judder or repeated frames; verify audio sync through transitions. |
| 24 fps | A possible fit when preserving the look of 24 fps motion is the priority. | Check how 30 fps footage appears at the chosen output rate, including motion and transitions. |
These are workflow options, not YouTube rules. The reviewed documentation does not say whether mixed-rate sources are converted by repeating, dropping, or interpolating frames, and it does not promise seamless transitions. Inspect the actual playlist rather than assuming a particular conversion method.
Set the live encoder’s resolution, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
Match your bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. For one specific case—1080p30 live ingestion—YouTube’s current settings table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC). Those values are not interchangeable: select the row for your actual encoder output in YouTube’s live encoder settings table.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS.
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use the matching row in YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating the 1080p30 figures. YouTube’s live guidance allows up to 60 fps, but that does not make 60 fps necessary for a playlist whose sources are 24 and 30 fps.
Build and test the OBS playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source can play files sequentially or shuffle them and can loop the list. VLC must be installed for the source to work. OBS documents the playlist controls, but does not guarantee seamless transitions or describe the quality of mixed-rate conversion. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

- Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then open OBS and add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the playlist files to the source and choose sequential or shuffle playback. Enable looping if the playlist should repeat.
- Set the live output cadence in your encoder workflow to one rate—24 or 30 fps—and make sure it remains stable as files change. Do not assume OBS’s playlist controls alone guarantee the desired cadence conversion.
- Test representative material: include both 24 fps and 30 fps clips, motion-heavy sections, audio, and the transitions likely to occur in the real broadcast.
- Review the result for judder, duplicated or dropped-looking motion, transition issues, and audio sync. Adjust the output choice or playback workflow and test again if needed.
Run a preflight before the public stream
- Send a test stream before going public and check that the live input matches the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you configured. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers preflight testing and encoder settings.
- Use audio and movement similar to the real playlist, not just a static test image.
- Check that your upload connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate and leave around 20% bandwidth headroom, as YouTube advises in its streaming tips.
- Monitor stream health while live. If you send primary and backup ingest feeds, configure both at the same frame rate: the YouTube Live Streaming API identifies a primary/backup frame-rate mismatch as a stream health issue.
- Use YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance for Live Control Room and reusable stream settings.
Troubleshoot mixed-rate playback
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Motion looks uneven on one type of clip | Whether it is the 24 fps or 30 fps material, and whether the output is set to 24 or 30 fps. | Test the alternate stable output cadence with the same representative footage and compare motion. The reviewed YouTube and OBS documentation does not establish a specific conversion algorithm. |
| Audio drifts or is out of sync after a clip change | Audio sync on the source files and across transitions in the actual OBS scene. | Test the affected files and transitions in advance; correct the playback or media issue in the workflow, then repeat the test before going live. |
| Playlist source does not play or loop | Whether VLC is installed and the files are present in the VLC Video source playlist. | Install VLC, verify the playlist entries, and test sequential, shuffle, or loop behavior in OBS before the broadcast. |
| Stream health reports a frame-rate mismatch | Configured live output and, if applicable, primary and backup ingest feed settings. | Set primary and backup feeds to the same frame rate and check the encoder’s outgoing settings. |
| Connection or stream health is unstable | Outgoing bitrate, available upload capacity, and whether the matching codec/resolution/frame-rate row was used. | Use YouTube’s recommended table value for the actual output and preserve roughly 20% upload bandwidth headroom. |
