For YouTube Live at 4K (3840Ă—2160) and 30 fps, a practical FFmpeg starting point is H.264 over RTMPS at 42 Mbps, with CBR-style rate control, a 60-frame GOP (two seconds), and stereo AAC at 128 kbps. YouTube lists 42 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 4K30; its recommended figure is 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are ingest recommendations, not proof your encoder or connection can sustain the stream.

FFmpeg command for a 4K 30fps YouTube Live stream

This example assumes a file input, SDR Rec. 709 video, stereo audio, an FFmpeg build with libx264, and sufficient encoding and upload capacity. Replace INPUT with the source file and the destination with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -vf "scale=3840:2160:flags=lanczos,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high
  -b:v 42M -minrate 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -bf 2 -refs 1 -coder cabac
  -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"

This is an implementation example based on YouTube’s published settings and FFmpeg documentation, not a tested preset. Encoder options and behavior can vary by FFmpeg build and encoder.

What the video options do

  • -vf "scale=3840:2160:flags=lanczos,fps=30,format=yuv420p" scales to 4K, sets 30 fps, and produces 8-bit 4:2:0 pixel format. It also upscales smaller sources. If you need to preserve the original aspect ratio or avoid upscaling, adapt the filter rather than applying this unchanged.
  • -b:v 42M -minrate 42M -maxrate 42M requests a CBR-style 42 Mbps video rate. The precise behavior depends on the encoder, so confirm its rate-control options.
  • -bufsize 84M is an example two-second rate-control buffer at 42 Mbps. It is an encoder control, not extra network bandwidth.
  • -g 60 -keyint_min 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • -preset veryfast trades encoding workload against compression efficiency. It is not a YouTube requirement; try a slower preset only if your system can encode in real time without missed frames.
  • -bf 2 -refs 1 -coder cabac are encoder settings in this libx264 example. Check the installed encoder documentation if you change encoders.

Audio and color

The command encodes AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed stereo guidance. YouTube lists 5.1 audio at 384 kbps and 48 kHz; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. The color flags label the output as Rec. 709; they do not convert video from a different color space. Use them only when the source is SDR/Rec. 709, or perform an appropriate conversion first.

YouTube’s recommended 4K30 ingest settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these 4K30 bitrate recommendations and minimums:

Ingest codec Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
H.264 42 Mbps 11 Mbps
AV1 30 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.265 30 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are platform-published ingest figures, not a guarantee of 4K playback quality or a measure of your actual connection. H.264 is the example above because it is explicitly listed by YouTube and commonly available in FFmpeg builds. AV1 and H.265 may use lower recommended ingest bitrates, but your installed encoder, hardware performance, and stream-mode support determine whether either is a practical choice.

Protocol, rate control, and latency

  • Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Use the RTMPS endpoint when it is available to your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest setup.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR. Translate that into the selected encoder’s own settings and verify the result rather than assuming every encoder interprets the same flags identically.
  • Keyframes: Two seconds is the recommendation; do not exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, 60 frames equals two seconds.
  • Latency: YouTube says 4K is optimized for quality at normal latency; its “improve for low latency” option is not available for 4K.

Adapt the command to your source and encoder

File input versus live capture

-re paces file reading at the input’s native rate and is useful when output packet timing matters. This command is for a file. Do not add -re to an actual capture device or live input: FFmpeg warns it can cause packet loss.

Check the local FFmpeg build

Confirm that your build includes the encoder you intend to use and supports the options you need. For libx264, the example’s preset and rate-control behavior depend on that encoder. If using a hardware encoder or another codec, consult that encoder’s help and verify that it can produce the required bitrate behavior and GOP interval.

Choose a sustainable workload

Real-time 4K encoding is demanding. If veryfast still misses frames, consider a faster preset, an available hardware encoder, or a lower resolution and bitrate. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency but should only be used if encoding remains real-time under the motion and detail in your actual program.

Preflight the stream before going live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Do not publish the key or leave it exposed in logs or screenshots.
  2. Check that FFmpeg lists the chosen encoder and supports the options you plan to use.
  3. Check stable upload capacity. Leave headroom above the selected video bitrate because audio and protocol overhead also use bandwidth. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can sustain reliably.
  4. Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test before the event. Include movement and audio similar to the real stream.
  5. Watch YouTube stream health and FFmpeg output for dropped frames, disconnects, and bitrate instability.
  6. If the test is unstable, reduce encoder workload, use an available hardware encoder, or lower resolution or bitrate, then test again.

YouTube’s guidance specifically recommends that tests include audio and movement similar to what the live stream will contain. A static test image alone will not reveal how your real content behaves.

Troubleshooting common 4K30 problems

  • FFmpeg reports that the encoder or option is unavailable: The local build may not include that encoder or may expose different options. Check the build’s encoder list and that encoder’s documentation; use an encoder and flags available on your system.
  • Encoding falls behind or frames are dropped: The machine may not sustain the selected 4K settings. Use a faster preset or hardware encoder if suitable, or reduce output resolution and bitrate; repeat a representative test.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the connection drops: The upload path may not sustain the target rate, particularly with audio and protocol overhead. Test the connection under realistic conditions and choose a lower bitrate or resolution if necessary.
  • Output looks stretched, soft, or unexpectedly upscaled: The example forces every source to 3840Ă—2160. Adjust the scaling filter to preserve aspect ratio and avoid enlarging a smaller source when that matters.
  • Color looks wrong: Rec. 709 flags tag the output; they do not transform the pixels. Verify the source color space and convert appropriately instead of relabeling non-Rec. 709 material.
  • Stream key or ingest authentication fails: Re-copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, check that the key is configured for the intended stream, and keep it private.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded program that loops as a YouTube live stream, rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud.
